1 heaping cup shortening
3/4 tsp salt
3 cups flour
1/2 cup cold water

Grandmothers like yours are the backbone of any nation. This is precious. My Grammie, Mom and Aunts were fantastic in the kitchen, too. I miss them all. I tried making a crust recently, but now I know I left out sufficient water as it cracked and wouldn't hold together. Won't be making that mistake again now that I know the cause. Bake on!

Awwwww... .We all know for sure who's making pies for family gatherings. When sweet grandma goes to heaven. What a blessing to have a granny. And to be able to spend time with her. And get to have the honors of getting her wisdom and craft past down to you in person! I never had the honors of knowing my grandparents. They lived in Mexico, and I grew up in Colorado. And my parents never made trips to go see them. You're one lucky kid to be able to experience the love and tlc of a grandmother!

Her way is similar to my mother-in-law's who now lives too far to teach me now that I'm ready. I was successful only once at making the crust. I will be 65 in Feb. & still yet, I felt as if I was once again a little girl watching my beloved grandma making pie.❤️👵 I was taught to use tapioca as a thickener too and really feel it is the best thing for fruit pies. I have been lazy for SO many years & have used frozen crusts (never with good results). But now I'm inspired so will find my rolling pin & give this a whirl for first time in over 25 years. 😊 Please tell Grandma that a great grandma from Hawaii sends her much love & prayers for bright blessings. thanks so much for this video, I am 62 years old and cook and bake after watching my mom through the years, but I lost her early, she was only 54 when she passed and I was just 23 and the one thing I didn't get was her pie crusts. Every time I make pies I always talk to her and say, I didn't pay enough attention mom,,, help me... I can do them but still struggle. These days they all put butter in their crusts, which my mom never did, and she did everything by hand. This is truly a lost art.. I thank you so much for taking the time to do this and I would love to see her do other things as well, cakes, cookies, maybe those yeast rolls she said she liked to make. I just found this and really loving it alot! thank you, thank you very very much.
also I want to say, I love that you love your grandma and taking the time to spend with her. I have two granddaughters that are 19 and 20 and couldn't care less if they saw me, and when I tried to help them with things, I get, things have changed since you were young grandma. You are a treasure to love your grandma so very much.

To extend my commentary, as you did yours, I'd offer the following insight: I'm 35 and I didn't have my life anywhere near together until I was 30.
This, despite decades of school culminating in multiple degrees.
And that's not an uncommon story "these days" because "things have changed since you were young."
Like you say, your grandma dying in her early 50s when you were in your early 20s.
But your granddaughters are younger, now, than you were, then...and not only is their grandma is in her 60s, but she's gonna' be around for a few more decades, at least.
It's this life extension that has dramatically shifted our culture in the last century.
My parents are in their 60s and they look better than their parents did when they were in their 50s.
Fifty years ago, you grew up in your teens: now, you grow up in your 20s, after being babied until you're a teen.
Go back a century and, as a teenager, you needed to function in adult life...because you were almost certainly going to be dead by 50.
I don't mean to turn this into a history lecture of times you lived through and I didn't, because I'm pretty sure you know more about them than I do.
My point is that you should have hope.
Because your 20-something granddaughters, now, are actually just like your teenage daughters were, back in the 1980s/1990s, in terms of their overall maturity.
Maturity has elongated along with the extension of physical health.
We baby children until they're teens, making their 20s the time for the kind of self-exploration that used to happen in high school and college.
Just as we've extended the lifespan by 20 years in the last 100 years, we've extended childhood/puberty/sophomoricism by nearly that same number.
The "bad news" is that this kind of thing is going to continue to progress as we continue advance medical technology, allowing us to push people who are your age right now into centenarians by 2060.
The good news is, I doubt when you were my age, you thought "At 60, I'll only be 2/3 of the way through life."
More good news is that, when those granddaughters of yours hit their proper maturity in ten years, you'll still be alive at 70, acting like your grandma did when she was 50.
My grandma, in this video, has never seen this video: she's only 20 years older than you and the tech barrier is that slim.
It's hard to imagine a time 50 years ago where a farm with a dozen hands on it can't use certain machines until the youngin' gets there, because he's the only one who knows how to operate them: that is 100% how it is on the farm, now.
Times change but, as they do, try to continue to advance yourself and embrace technological development, and stay positive, because the future is gonna' be great!

@@EatAtJoes thank you for taking the time to write this, and your words, I appreciate them very much. My husband tries to tell me the same thing really and I kinda know that but it still hurts. Mostly I think because I was like a second mom to those girls most of their lives, and then their mom got sick, my daughter, she wasnt just my daughter but my best friend, we did everything together, I rarely left my house without her, and then she came down with breast cancer at age 30 and we went through almost 7 years of that, and I took care of them all, but was with my daughter every step of the way, then I lost her and I thought we were so close we would be their for each other and lean on each other but that didn't happen either.. They moved on very quickly and just forgot about us. We live way away from everything and no other family around. I think its just the combination of it all. If I had their mom around to tell me things and make me try to see things as you have done here too, I think it might be easier. But its life and theres nothing you can do about it, just certainly hasn't turned out the way I thought it would. Family has always been the most important thing to me, and in my life and I go on most days because you have to right? what else can you do? But every now and then when I see something like you with your grandma it makes my heart hurt again, but I just wanted to praise you for being there with her and taking the time. I do thank you and I know what you say is true, times have changed, I don't think I like them much lol. I think the past was a much nicer place. You are really quite a young man to take the time to write me and I really appreciate it, thank you so much and for your kind words of hope, because really we all need that don't we!

holy moly, i have tried for so many years to make a halfway decent pie crust. I tried soooo many recipes, have done OK but nothing that i was REALLY proud of. so many recipes are tortuous, freezing the butter, ice cold water etc., refrigerating the dough, etc, etc. and always resulted in a dough that was very difficult to roll out. not one mention of the need for enough water. i made this recipe today, easy as pie, lolo and the result (peach crumble pie) was devoured (3 people) in one day!! the crust: perfection! thank you so much, i have now achieved one of my life goals!!

Thank you for sharing... my Grandmother taught me how to make pie crust too way back in the 1970s. She taught me to cut the shortening in with my fingertips and it is faster and consistent. I can't do it any other way. The water is always a variable depending on the humidity. You just have to go by feel.

Ok I really enjoyed watching and learning from grandma hope!!! My great grandmother won all kinds of stuff with her pies!! She even sold them by the dozen at the gas station just off hwy. ppl all around would come to eat and buy her pies. I remember going to her house you could smell the baking all way outside!! She had a wall of windows and each window would be rolled open for her pies to cool. What I wouldn’t give to sit and talk to her now and learn more of her tricks!! Well, it’s Thanksgiving tomorrow 2023. So, I watched again and today I made this crust and the same pie. It’s in the oven now. I don’t recall seeing the oven temp or time for baking. I had an idea, because I’ve made pies before, but was wanting your grandmas way. So , if that could be added maybe just to the recipe or a reply to this post, that would be great. I’m baking it at 400 degrees for 45 to 55 minutes? Thanks and I do hope your grandma is doing well.

I noticed that too. I think that's where I go wrong. I've only made one really good pie crust in many attempts and it was so stinking time consuming and detailed. (Make sure the kitchen isn't too warm! Make sure the ingredients and bowls are cold! Put them in the freezer to make sure! Refrigerate the crust before using! Blah blah blah.) Yes, the end result was good, but like I said, so time consuming and downright stressful! Haha. I will have to try grandma's recipe and be sure to be very gentle with it.

@@brookiebakerie If you're using shortening, it'll help a lot with the annoying parts you've heard (i.e. "too warm" or "working too much" or whatever blah blah). You only need to worry about temperatures when you're working with a butter or a lard, which has a 95F melt temp. Shortening has a 115F melt temp, so its much more forgiving. Beautiful lady and excellent pie crust. I just baked an apple pie and it is perfect. I have tried many recipes and could never get it right. I can't wait to share with my family.
Now I'm thinking of doing a raspberry pie for Thanksgiving. I was intrigued by her method of stirring in the shortening and skipping rest. Her dough looked different from mine before and after rolling. I really loved her decorated top crust. I usually do slits or leaves in a cross pattern.

How fun! Years ago I did the same thing with my Grandma. Her specialty was homemade Chicken' n' Dumplins. All that was available at that time was the VCR format but I got it and then duplicated enough to give to her 4 children and my sisters. Any cousins who wanted a copy, they could either make their own, watch their parents, or ask me! It's a precious gift that we'll treasure always!!!!!
