      Think this is part of why I prefer cats a bit. Don't get me wrong, dogs are more "useful" and "friendlier," but I feel like cats being more rebellious and not good listeners makes them feel more like people sometimes. There's a certain level of autonomy they get that dogs don't really have.

The horses will cause a distraction while the sneaky ninja cats stealthily move into position. They will then simultaneously trip almost everyone in England and we will seize the power! Cats are far more trainable than they are usually given credit for being (and that includes walking pn leashes). I have trained 2 of my cats to walk on leashes and one would walk along with my dog like they were a pack... 😏 Harness training was "fun," but once they realized the harness meant going outside, they were full on board! 😁 It was good exercise AND the bonus of all the crazy looks from the neighbors, and passersby, was PRICELESS! 😉

    • @PamWD
      @PamWD Рік тому +4

      The first cat we had, when we tried to train him for walking outside on a harness, he would just promptly lay down on the sidewalk and absolutely refuse to move. We never got past this. The last cat we had hated being outside, believe it or not! I would go outside the front door holding her, and she would try scrambling over my shoulder to get back in the house. If I sat her down on the porch, she would immediately run back inside! She loved to sit at a screened open window, though!

      Yes! I've known several trained cats. Including one puffy legend who used to be walked around the neighborhood on a harness. It was so cute I could not even. Several I knew belonged to one person who grew up in a dog-training family, ended up loving cats and had never heard they couldn't be trained so she just trained hers. All of them. If I ever get a cat again, I'll start with a kitten. It's easier if you start when they're younger.

      Hell, I'm not doing anything more important, so I'll go ahead and give the fascinating little history lesson.
      Horses are endemic to the Americas. What you ask? You thought there weren't any horses in the Americas until the Spanish brought them in the late 1400s? Well, you're right! But....
      Horses originated in North America millions of years ago, it is believed. They migrated throughout the Americas and lived good lives here too, populating large swaths of both continents...until about 10,000-15,000 years ago and then they just disappear from the fossil records. We don't know why, but what we do know is that some had managed to cross the land bridge that connected Alaska with Siberia, just as the first humans were going in the opposite direction.
      Apparently, the horses liked Asia and eventually they were domesticated by central Asian herding tribes, probably the ancestors of the Mongols. They were further refined through selective breeding until today. They found their way back to America thanks to Christopher Columbus and his successors.
      Modern horses don't look much like their ancestors from the Americas, but they are classified as the same species.

    what's interesting about cats is if you read the history of their domestication, you'll actually come out with the realization that cats were never properly domesticated,at least not by us. effectively most experts agree that they domesticated themselves, they basically realized that being around humans was an extremely good opportunity because it meant easy access to food. so over time they just got used to being around us and here we are but again they effectively domesticated themselves.

Had one when I was a teen that would only eat 2 brands of food, give her anything else & she'd act like she was burying it. She'd exaggerate said motions for emphasis.

    Concerning smaller pets, the care standards for hamsters (for instance) tend to be higher in the UK. I mean the cages our pet shops sell are still too small for them (they need at least 80x50cm unbroken floorspace) but at least they're not just straight up dangerous (Tiny Tales cages in the US, which are marketed more as toys for children as opposed to habitats for animals).
    I've also noticed in various Facebook care communities I'm in for small animals (rats, hamsters) breeding them for 'fun' is more widely done in the US. Also pet rats are sold alone (BIG no-no) SO often in the US since they're generally sold for live feeding reptiles (basically all but illegal in the UK) whereas in the UK the main pet shop has a policy that doesn't allow them to be sold alone, which is good at least.
    Just a thing I've noticed from adminning/being part of various groups.

    Well, let's be real... having a cat starts at 2. Even with immediate full cohabitation, cats will quickly learn to get along. When I brought my current mostly-grey kitty home as an older kitten from the parking lot where I worked, her late adopted sister (who did live with other cats all her life, to be fair) basically accepted the kitten immediately. It was only the newcomer that growled, hissed and hid. That lasted all of about 2 days. When I saw the elder grooming the younger, I knew they'd settled in together.

      @migitri 4 роки тому +6

      Same with Nebraska. Tons of coyotes here. I used to live in Arizona where the coyotes are smaller and I was shocked at how huge they are here. Turns out that the largest coyote subspecies lives here in the Midwest (I think the same large subspecies might also live in parts of New Mexico, but I'm not 100% sure). Thankfully, they usually keep to themselves, but if a small pet strays too far from a house, the coyotes won't hesitate to catch it if they're hungry enough. There's a breeding pair in my area and part of their territory is in our forested backyard so we can't ever let our cats out. Thankfully, one is too scared to go out anyways, and the other has been an indoor cat his whole life so he doesn't really ask to go out and we keep him very entertained with toys and games inside. We signed an agreement at the humane society we got him from that he would be indoor only, which is their policy for adopting cats out, partly because it's technically illegal in my location to allow any pet, even a cat, to go out off-leash unless it's safely contained in an inescapable enclosure (but it's never really enforced unless the pet causes trouble).

      I don't think I'd have an outdoor cat anywhere anymore. Last one we let out went missing for 2 weeks and came home with a mangled-up leg that had to be amputated. Vet thought he got caught in a car engine. He still lived to be 17.

    • @migitri

      @@Cadwaladr
      My mom's cat she had back in the 70s and 80s also had to have her leg amputated when she got her leg mangled by some farm equipment. My sister's cat went missing and never came back so we suspect that he died (somebody who lives near me routinely shoots cats who come onto his property). One of my childhood cats went missing for 7 months in 2009 and we only got Mimi back because we have all our pets microchipped and somebody called the humane society about her when a winter storm was coming in. It turns out that she was just in a different neighborhood, having taken a wrong turn somewhere (a cat that she interacted with had been hit by a car, so I wonder if she saw that happen and got too startled to find her way home). She was so happy to be home and we had another 9 years with her until she passed away in 2018 at the age of 17. Her sister passed away a year later at the age of 18, outliving Mimi by one year.
      With all that's happened, it seems best to keep our cats inside. Our vet agrees but that's a discussion each person should have with their vet or local humane society (I do strongly recommend keeping cats indoors if possible though).

    Great video! I learned awhile back that there are more horses in America, today, than ever were in the past. My neighbor has four right next door to me. We live in the country, but it's getting built up. They own a strip of land that they let the horses run on. Before them there were some people who raised dogs (horrible barking all the time), so I love to see the horses. We have two budgies that we love, but in the past we have had multiple cats, a couple dogs, a duck, a goat, a rat, some mice, a rooster, some guinea pigs, hundreds of fish, more budgies, a tortoise and horned toads from the desert, and rabbits.

    Regarding the "3 second memory of a fish" theory, as a long time aquarium owner ive always found this to be false. Ive actually taught tricks to several of my fish. Such as waving at them and getting them to respond instantly and happily, which they can show an obvious sense of happiness by moving side to side or even up and down in an excited manner. My Angelfish loves to wiggle side to side. Side note to any fish owners, if u buy a cheap handheld mirror or 2 and place it up against the glass your fish WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT! Its adds some extra amusement on top of fish already being entertaining. Another trick ive taught many fish is shaking the food container in front of them. They actually LEARN what it is and become bursting with excitement. Ive even done my own experiments with my fish to test their memory. I think what might be true is maybe they have a TOTAL memory comprised of only taking up about 3 seconds in totality.
    But just a warning to any non fish owners out there, it can be difficult sometimes to take care of tanks properly, so its not for everyone.

    • @judeflowers2813
      @judeflowers2813 3 роки тому +1

      True, tanks are alot of work to care for properly! I never thought of mirrors! What a good idea. My fish did respond to dinner time when I shook the food container. And my goldfish(es?) would react to me when I walked by their tank, expecting food or treats, I suppose.

      Yes I have great admiration for you! I inherited a betta fish in a classroom and I kept him alive for over a year and it was a lot of work! He ended up getting something where his fin was rotting off and I tried so many different medicines and treatments and nothing seemed to help! The last one I tried, I followed the directions but they were wrong, and it ended up killing him. 😥 I was so upset because I had tried so hard to save him. I still feel so awful about it I can hardly think about it. I loved having him but it’s a crazy amount of work to keep the tank clean.

    I fell off a two year old filly. She was just bought by my cousin and he was so excited. The family decided to take a family photo with me on the horse. She was saddled. I was three years old. The family was at the farm of my grandparents. They all gathered around and took the photos. Then, someone let go of her reins, not me. She took off down the driveway toward the highway. I tried to hold onto the pommel. I fell off halfway down the drive. Thank the Lord! I woke up in the doctors office. Needless to say, I don’t like to ride nor heights for that matter. I have one dog and a six month old kitten.
