    For anyone wondering...YES, you can drain the system in your driveway and then safely drive it into the garage for strut replacement afterward. I found out this week that my 4Runner has the x-reas system and all the fluid leaked out before I even bought the thing. The only result from lose of fluid is a bouncy suspension 🤣

    Excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to help us out. I'm converting to a quality stock type suspension with this information. My 2004 4Runner has 290,000 and runs excellent. Just needs the suspension updated while saving some money. The X-REAS system struts and shocks are very expensive. Thanks again

    So when you remove xres do you have to replace all shocks ?

  • @kal7393
    @kal7393 7 років тому +14

    Wish I could say this is a good xreas removal guide- but you shouldn't remove the system at the points they show (banjo bolt). There are specific locations along the system that have check valves that when removed at these locations prevent the system from discharging hydraulic fluid all over.

      Would love to see a video of this as there is nothing on youtube showing this method. Only cutting the lines or removing at banjo as shown here. Would love to remove it without spraying fluid all over my driveway and car.

      I had X-REAS removed from my 5th Gen Limited a few years ago and replaced it with a Toytec BOSS suspension w/ 3" lift. Definitely handles differently, but I don't miss the stock X-REAS system AT ALL. Extremely happy with the way my Limited drives and the ride is SMOOTH.

    hello, good day, I did that complete uninstallation, and replaced the air bags and shock absorbers with an OME (old man emu) suspension, but how do I remove the heigs off control panel light? The other question is that after having uninstalled the entire system and installed the new one, the abs, brake and traction control lights came on, how do I turn them off? Does it have something to do with this removal of that suspension

    Is the trend with most owners to remove the system if it needs repairs? My 2013 Limited has a leak in the Xreas system according to the Firestone folks. Manager says to remove and replace with Monroe shocks/struts to save money. If I leave it as is, I stand to induce tire damage (🤨🤔🤔) in the long run. I don’t mind the somewhat stiff ride from the 4wheel drive design.

  • @slimjjs1

    This is absolutely NOT the best way to remove an X-REAS system from a Toyota 4Runner. Although the description of how the system works is pretty accurate, you should never disconnect the system at the location in the video and spray hydraulic fluid all over the place.
    There are specific disconnect locations on the lines that allow you to remove the shocks/struts without losing any hydraulic fluid. This enables you to replace either individual shocks/struts or replace opposite corners simultaneously as recommended by Toyota. If you want to rip out the system with no care for using it again, then you're fine using this method, but even so I prefer not to spray my vehicle or shop floor with hydraulic oil.
    For proper removal, visit any 4Runner forum. Basically you want to raise all 4 tires off the ground so that all shocks/struts are fully extended (this puts equal amount of hydraulic fluid to each shock/strut so they can be replaced). Then disconnect the lines at the specified disconnect points. Remove the shocks/struts using the regular method and reinstall with new X-REAS, Bilstein 5100's, 6112's, OME, Tacoma TRD, FJ Cruiser or some other aftermarket set up. If you ever want to be able to go back to X-REAS (don't like the ride of the aftermarket setups for example), then leave the hydraulic lines installed. If not, you can remove them as well.
    Good grief, the misinformation is atrocious.

    • @vonguido1

      this is directed at removing the XREAS SYSTEM...if it was about replacing something on the system they would have done it differently, calm down sally

    • @slimjjs1
      @slimjjs1 7 років тому +10

      Don't call me sally, and don't tell me to calm down. I'm trying to advise people on the correct removal method.
      It's irresponsible to say that this is the way to remove X-REAS, when you're not following any procedures advised by Toyota, nor stating this should only be followed if you do not want to ever use your X-REAS again. I get a bit alarmed with people posting misinformation. It is "a way" to remove it, but so it taking BFH and a wrecking bar. Someone looking to remove it may stumble upon the video and think, "okay this is the way I should do it" w/ out knowing all the repercussions of using this method. If they want to install an aftermarket setup, then no problem using this method (as I stated, aside from spraying hydraulic fluid on your floor) but if they want to maintain the ability to install X-REAS or replace individual components, this should not be followed.

    • @vonguido1
      @vonguido1 7 років тому +4

      they say in the video, "in order to install many upgrades the XREAS has to be removed".....That right there tells me its being removed completely and to most people thats what that means...if you want to advise people on the correct removal method create your own video and stat that..or do a write up on a forum. There are many ways to do lots of things, regardless if its the "best" way or not.
      So once again calm down sally

      monroe quick struts would be a severe downgrade from anything with a toyota badge... why are you touching your xreas on a 2011... If they are leaking try spraying brake clean on the area and see if it comes back before you ditch a very expensive luxury system

      1. if your 2010+ 4runner has a hydraulic connected system, it's called KDSS not xreas.

      You need to replace all 4, you can't go and just replace the fronts, because the hydraulic system is cross linked front left to rear right and front right to rear left. If you swap out the fronts you need to replace the rear at the same time.

    Newbie. So just got the news that my local autoshop won't touch my suspension because....I got the Xreas. 2004 4runner sport edition. How much handling and vehicle control may be lost with the FJ/Bils combo? I do have to commute on highway during winter and don't want to compromise too much with the swap. A little is ok. Not really looking to raise or lower anything on my 4runner, just need new suspension as my tires are starting to cup, and dealer is asking $3,000 plus?!?!Any thoughts is much appreciated.

    • @TickleFingers
      @TickleFingers 7 років тому +3

      cj x you probably already did the swap so who know if this is useful to you. The XRES is kind of nice and the ride is nice, but I put on my 2005 (non-XRES) the 5100's with stock springs (2.5 inch perch in front and 1.5 daystar space in rear). The ride is way better than stock. Our 2008 limited with XRES has a more composed car like ride on pavement, but thats about it. It doesnt feel any more confident or stable than any non-XRES T4R in my opinion. I like the 5100's better....

      Lord Beeno you can get them online at sites like toytechlifts.com or even amazon if you know what you're looking for, just make sure you do your homework first and a setup that meets your needs. Some like spacer lifts because it's cheap, but doesn't really add off road capability. Coilovers can give you both lift and capability, but are more expensive.

    • @lowrangeoffroad1
      @lowrangeoffroad1  7 років тому

    • @guido2114

      They are so expensive, I am having a hard time even finding them. It might be cheaper to go the other route. I don't know about lifting it to much just really don't know what to do.. Right now the front shocks are starting to leak a little.

    • @slimjjs1
      @slimjjs1 7 років тому +1

      Lord Beeno stock X-REAS shocks are $$$, that is why many people go with an aftermarket and lift it. I've seen lots of people use Bilstein 5100s as a direct replacement, but again, if you are replacing X-REAS you have to replace all 4 corners, can't just do the fronts. Lots of replacement options, just depends how much you want to spend. I found some Tacoma TRD Off road front and rear on Craigslist for cheap and used some FJ springs in the rear. Lots of write ups on 4Runner forums, or take it to someone and pay them to do the install.
