No, Helen Kane didn’t copy baby Esther. She was already singing like this and had recorded song including this one before supposedly seeing baby Esther as Lou Boulton claims. The Fleischers needed a witness and story to discredit Kane, and so they tried to say Kane stole someone else’s act (i.e., Esther Jones), but as I said, and you can prove yourself, Kane was already performing like this before seeing baby Esther. PLUS, her voice sounds more “Jewish-new Yorker” than black. You’re buying a false narrative and need to do more research.
Reading the actual trial transcripts, the Fleischers wanted to show that other people had been doing Helen Kane's act, and making money off it, for years before Betty Boop first appeared. And that Helen Kane not only knew about it, but even encouraged it. Thd judge's verdict was NOT that Kane "hadn't originated it", but rather that Kane had done NOTHING to try and legally defend it until 1932, years after multiple people had made money off copying her. The funny thing is, Esther's act simply had her covering three Helen Kane songs, but not really being like Kane/Betty Boop at all.
It must have been a little confusing, seeing hundreds of women sporting the Helen Kane look, because that's what was happening by the time this song was released.
I only listened to this by a stroke of chance, I just muttered something random to my cat as I was having a play fight. My Samsung phone then looked this up without me asking it anything so therefore is this out of ordinary that this mistake could be creating a alternate time line than it would have been if I didn't find this song and now you are read this, so butterfly effects all round here.
Not that I'm aware of. However maybe this will suffice. :) Mae Questel, who has a very similar voice to Helen's (in fact Betty Boop was based on Helen, and Mae was one of the voice actors who performed Betty's voice.) has a 1937 version of I Want You for Christmas and you can find it right here on UA-cam. That is if you even get this message since you left your comment so long ago.
unfortunately helen kane doesnt have any christmas songs recorded although she was catholic. Interestingly betty boop was of the hebrew faith as was Mae Questel. Mae was originally a Helen Kane impersonator which is how she got the job doing Betty Boop.
Baby Esther was the true original and Betty Boop. The creators of Betty Boop modeled her after Kane, not knowing she was just a copy cat who stole her look and sound from Baby Esther. Kane got pissed and tried to sue the creators of Betty boop for “using her” as a cartoon even though she stole her material from someone else. Esther tried to sue and was murdered
Fom her wikipedia page, "In 1934, Esther also attended a NAACP for Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Robinson also taught Helena Justa and Florence Mills. According to a source, Esther later became a full-time acrobat and had later lost most of her appeal and was then succeeded by other black child stars such as Baby Hilda and Baby Selma."
Sorry, but that's nonsense. Helen Kane originated the style all by herself. After Fleischer Studios created Betty Boop, Kane sued them. At this point a character called Lou Bolton CLAIMED that Kane had seen Esther performing in the style in mid-1928. Not only was his story debunked at the time, but Kane was already performing in that style BEFORE that. Only in the last 10 years did someone deliberately misrepresent that, and it looks like you fell for it.
I may be 18 but I love Helen Kane
I love her voice, I wish I was able to sound like that.
"I call you on the phone
, and I get you on the phone, but you say you're not home" can we all admire the savage here
HELEN KANE=A GODDESS :)
Real Betty Boop :) ❤️
Sofía Ovalle Nope, just the copycat

I love her voice
I have great piano roll of this hit played by Howard Lutter and it's one of the best! Nice to hear it sung.

It's okay i'm 15 and i love his type of music too! So your not alone :)
FOR somhow I love the voices of a lot of the old singers
At the time this song was released, Helen was at the peak of her popularity.

Ah such a good vibe.
i love helen kane
and here it is 2013 and she is still one of the most beautiful women to ever exist. They sure don't make them like they used to.
With good reason; it's a terrific song! :)
She is such a Cutie. That soft Soothing voice.
You who can't appreciate the oldies but goodies.

Holly Anne X2 :'v
This song was recorded on Thursday December 20, 1928.
i love listening to her music since i can actually get my voice to hers compared to todays music where the pitches hurt my throat TuT
I know that feel! ^u^
Been looking for this song, thanks!
Thank you for the info! :)
yeah excactly! and thanks! :)
To the 28 people u disliked Dont be like that
Hah, gotta love dis broad!
A lot of people make fun of me for liking this kind of music and being only 14 years old. But they just don't know what real music is.
I only listened to this by a stroke of chance, I just muttered something random to my cat as I was having a play fight. If someone with her voice tried to become a singer today, they would get laughed off stage.
salem587 Britney Spears used to have a similar voice in my opinion
i mean anyone singing in a 20s style would sound odd today but there are others with high voices that sound great like Charly Bliss
oh yea hot stuff makes me smile thanks Matt NY
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👀
👄 incredible
Girl, he's dissing you! Drop his a$$
That's right! Don't listen to them. ;)
@ohhobobabe You can find it on iTunes! =)
just use a recorder here while listening to it. I have a paid version of Total Recorder from High Criteria that I use...you are welcome to use it
@Tacoflavoredkiss1 Pretty outside the box thinking for anyone who is under 50, I would say. Helen Kane's awesome.
Okay, Helen. I won't be like that. Damn, she's dead!
Yeah, Breast Cancer killed her ;-;
Eisen Heinrich She would dead anyways long ago. She would be over 110 years old.
polifatts She could have possibly lived to be 125 atleast :P
If bob dylan had gone on stage back in the 20s or 30s, they would've laughed HIM off the stage.
@ohhobobabe
Google something like of "convert UA-cam to mp3" for free online utilities that will allow you to download it.
@ohhobobabe Try googling "Jimmy Jazz archives" and search for it there - I think that's where I got a lot of the Helen Kane tunes I own :)
omg yay!!!! haha jeez i wrote that comment sooo long ago
2021 this comment section makes me feel so alone lol
@PatrickJHKeenan haha yeah. I agree :)
perfect transfer. i want to know where you got your source material.
Question: Is it the man who is saying ' dont be like that ' or is her to him ( I know its her voice) just asking for the context
I think it's her telling the man not to be such a tease, to give her some more 'action' ;)
So, is this actually how she sounded or was it an affect?
Her actual voice. There is also footage of her just speaking.
Thanks! and I certainly won't haaha.
Can someone PLEASE tell me if she also has a "santa baby" version? I have a bet I need to confirm..thx
dirty9er415 That would have been perfect.

Cyndi Lauper has the same voice.
@TheMarioluigifans She, They probably did.
Oh I hate how she white washed berry boop, it really makes me wonder how this song would sound like.
she looks like Hi11ary C1itton...
