Me too. Him along with Geezer Butler, Steve Harris and Cliff Burton! And I know I sound crazy but I also love WASP's bass lines for some reason They are rarely properly heard but when they do, they are awesome.
@@Leon.16 Oh yes! Steve Harris, and Cliff Burton were awesome the way they could play those really fast and very musical bass lines. I've always liked the bass playing of W.A.S.P. as well, especially when Blackie Lawless played bass.
@@kevinhughes9200 Yes Blackie had a really cool style, but Mike Duda the current bassist is also really good at playing. Nice to see other WASP enjoyers!
@@Aimore1991yeah...Chris Slade can't swing and doesn't groove ... and he had a very short stint with them.. phil came back and then tney grooved for 15 more years
Way to give Cliff his due respect. I found this video similar to the one on Dee Dee Ramone. Both bands share a lot in common, I think. For me, the driving 8th note is what attracted me to bass. It's very primal and you feel it in your gut. The opening to Thunderstruck is a perfect example of that. Great series Paul!
Cliff takes the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle and maximises “less is more”. Killer bass lines, simple but played well, they’ve got the following and success to prove it. They make us garage band dudes believe man 🙏🙏
All those notes are really well thought out and here and there is a good chance of the bling moment. You never get bored - even after thousands of listens. The genius minimalistic style is equally meticulously executed by every member of the band.
Thank you for this wonderful video! This video will make it much easier for me to explain to my non-musicians friends why the AC/DC beat has such a strong effect on them -- you laid it out very well! As a young bassist, I was waaaay into Prog Rock and complicated basslines before I took a breath to appreciate how important it is to play a simple rock-solid bass line, without any fancy ornamentation, and how much power THAT could have. Cliff showed me the way -- now, I will happily play repetitive 8th notes on the A string and be in heaven! AC/DC's rhythm section was arguably the most ROCK STEADY of any of the late 70s/early 80s bands (and still to this day); man, their time was so steady you could set your watch to them. ... Now to get woodsheddin'!
He plays great on the album "For Those About To Rock". Let's Get It Up, Evil Walks...he is buried in the mix, but he has some busier asides and moves around quite a bit. He is excellent.
Not a particularly skilled or technical player - same can be said about drummer Phil Rudd. But over the years I learned to appreciate how perfect both their timing is and how it gives AC DC it's simple but iconic sound.
Cliff can definitely play. Everyone usually either gives him credit or stig for pounding root notes all the time, but if you listen to some isolated tracks or live versions where the bass is higher in the mix, you can hear that the man has some chops. He just does them in a very restrained way, leaving them like little gems for bass players and devoted fans to discover.
When I first started playing bass I listened to Geezer Butler, Dennis Dunaway and Roger Glover a lot. Once AC/DC came along I realized I overplayed a bit and toned down my own style into a combination of the 4. And yeah, Down Payment Blues is a great sleeper song.
One thing is for sure the bass gets you moving in every AC/DC song now sure Cliff Williams doesn't play a thousand notes a minute he doesn't have to AC/DC just gets you rockin and puts you in a good mood 🤘🤘
Cliff is solid AF on that bass. Everyone thinks it's easy but I can tell a cover player in 2 notes. And yeah he could "show off" if the song called for it but I do think this is leaving out some of his most interesting bass parts. Night Of The Long Knives & Rock The House to name a couple.
playing 8th notes pedal tones during all a song is the hardest things I handle with as a bass player; no kidding! stamina, consistence, on tone and feeling, I'm sill work on it. and here another one : Dusty Hill
Thank you so much for this video :) I learnt a lot from this! Isn't it amazing how two of the most iconic bands in history have bass players using Stingray - and Ego less - ACDC & Queen!!!!
The man, the myth, the legend + musicman stingray and ampeg and most important the feel !!! Saw AC/DC several time’s in the eighties Back in Black Tour FTOTR Tour front row … still got my tickets and memories
You are the man I'm recording the next great rock and roll album every bass player ever wanted to emulate you've done a tutorial on great compliment to my guitar-playing thank you
He is a Rock and Roll bassist, holding the rhythm foundation of the song, not a pseudo jazz noodler. One of my favorites along with Sting and Adam Clayton.
Great video, I like Cliff Williams because he plays basic yet musical and effective. It's not what you play but how you do it, and tone, timing and tastefulness is the most elemantary. Cliff Williams is a very good example of these principles
I mean, just listen to his part on Gone Shootin'. It's why I started learning to play bass 15 years ago. Then I bought a Stingray Classic and an Ampeg. His picking and thumb style are very hard to replicate. Very buttery tone.
It's the exact analysis I needed to fully understand the production style. I tried doing it but it was quite the task.. Your epiphany of using pedal tone for verses and follow the chords in the chorus was nothing short of absolute genius.
Nice video/post. Cliff is fucking awesome. They have charmed the world with what everyone can play, but they’ve charmed them with the idiosyncrasies of the way they play it. Lyrically it can be futile, however Musically genuinely moved. It’s a groove thing. It’s hard to explain, but it is real. Millions of records sold can’t Helps to prove it.. so saying if they never sold their life’s it’ll still be fucking brilliant
There are some bass players who play in a simplistic manner yet they make up for it in feel, tone and how they blend well with the other band members. Cliff epitomizes that. Also, it would be cool if you could have an episode dedicated to Alex James of Blur.
Dug Pinnick of King's X said he was hanging with Cliff and Cliff was playing Jaco riffs and other flashy stuff,he said he asked Ciff why he doesn't play like that in AC/DC, he said, "They won't let me"
Suck a solid player and underrated and doesn't get props he deserve as one of the best in the business. The foundation of AC/DC for years and solid backing vocals to go along with his awesome Bass play!!!
He has changed his style a bit over the years when it comes to live. If you listen to old bootlegs from the 70s, you can hear that it used to be much more part of the "rawness" of the overall (live)sound of the band. He played very aggressively and also partially distorted (loud svt). In addition, he also sprinkled some very extraordinary small fillings, here and there. Nowadays, on the other hand, his live game and sound are more similar to the studio recordings. I really like his live sound from the 70s and it was hard work, which he did in part. However, a very important part of the style is the drummer. You can't really copy Cliff's style if the drummer isn't really tight. Many drummers "run away" (musically) when you play through a song in cliffstyle on the rootnote. ⚡️ 🤘
it is a bit like mike tysons wisdom-everybody has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth. everybody disses cliff until they try to actually sound and play like him. it is not that easy.
Hi love ur videos. Could u do a video on how to sound like gene Simmons ( if u haven’t done that type of video yet, but if u have could you please give me the link ?) thx
Good to see Cliff get some love as a bassist! Great example of basslines that are harder than they look. Would be nice to see Paul McCartney, Tina Weymouth and Roger Waters next
I just joined an acdc cover band....his stuff is not that simple, that driving A note that he does in a lot of songs stands out but theres way more going on. The feeling and the tightness, cutting off notes at the right time. Ome of my favorite bassists now for sure.
