Raga Yaman: Alap & Gat in Teental
To commemorate the birthday of Ustad Idris Khan (25.08.1955-2013) we release this little snippet of a short alap followed by a traditional old gat in Raag Yaman. This is taken from an informal recital recorded by Max Katz on 07.03.2008 in the ancestral house of the Khan family in Lucknow.
Idris Khan learnt sitar from his father Ustad Ilyas Khan and his Uncle Ustad Umar Khan. He served at Bhatkhande Music College(Almora branch) and performed regularly in Assam, Lucknow, Jabalpur and a few other places.
Together with his cousin Ustad Irfan Khan, Idris was instrumental in building the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana Archive, as he and his cousin recorded and documented his father's AIR concerts on tape since the early 1980s. So far, we have digitized and archived more than a hundred cassettes of (mainly) his father's recordings, which form the foundation of our audio archive.
