"John" grey was not necessarily Bobby's owner's name. In fact no one knew his first name. John (Jock) was first used in a 1912 book about him by Eleanor Atkinson. Nor was he a policeman. He was employed by the police as a night Watchman. Also, assuming Bobby was older than a newborn puppy when he met 'John', they couldn't have known each other for more than a matter of months given that Bobby was 16 when he died, and spent 14 of those years by the graveside...?
Totally inaccurate, J Grey is in an unmarked grave but there is a "headstone" in the graveyard simply as a memorial - - - donated by some Godawful American dog society. The statue of Bobby is on a fountain about 100 yards from the entrance. Bobby's remains are NOT buried in the graveyard, it is illegal to bury an animal on consecrated ground. The restaurant where Bobby had his meals is thought to be Greyfriars Bar which is next to the statue. But the graveyard has another claim to fame, it is reportedly one of the most haunted places in UK, Covenanters Prison is in there and this is where people can go on tours, but some have come running out screaming with cuts on their faces and don't know how they got injured....... I did the tour once, never again, it's scary
