  • The Google home is more then just a smart speaker. Many people tend to miss the real potential and benefits of adding one to their home setup especially if you have any kind of automation in place. it becomes voice remote control for your smart devices. Since the Google Home is such a new smart speaker it does not support many devices natively unlike Amazons Echo which can support many devices at the moment due to its head start on the market. but using IFTTT "If This Then That" or a Smartthings hub you will be able to bring more compatability to your Google home automation setup. in this video I will cover how to use IFTTT to create a applet that works with your Harmony hub which is a device that is not natively supported by the Google Home.

      Breaking Elegance my beautiful wife just but me a brand new Google Home, the problem is my 3 daughters and my wife and I use all iOS devices, and or PC's. I was recently put on disability but and she thought this might help. I have IFTTT installed on my iOS 6S Plus and an iPad Pro 7.9". We have two newer Samsung smart TV's and because money I'd tight is it worth unboxing? My who family and I have had at least 2 GMail email accounts. Should I return this and wait Apple to release it's own type of hardware at double the price. I should also mention I have 2 of the newest AppleTV's on each Samsung. Can Google Home be a help? I also received a Phillips Hue 2 bulb starter kit, do I need the "bridge" or will the Google Home and or HomeKit on our phoned be all that I need? The cost between the kit vs 2 Hue Bulbs without the bridge be ok. ($90) price difference. I look forward to hearing any feedback from you, of course if you tell me to buy Android phone's that's not in the realm of possibility..... thank's again!
      Rick

    Are you planning on making any videos that explain in depth how you actually set up some of the cool things you do. The IFTTT explanation in this video is excellent, however I would like to know how to specifically set up some of the activities. High level explanations are great to get someone interested, however people watching this kind of channel are already interested. It would be great to have videos that show some nice feature and then an explanation of how exactly to do it. More than one person has asked you how to wake up the computer and you either ignore the question or answer at a high level that does not help. The previous sentence sounds more critical than it is meant to, it's just that for me the ultimate channel would show great ideas and how to make them come to fruition.

      +George Molnar I am working on a video for this just taking some time to sketch out something for it and I have a list together but great input and you're correct I haven't gotten to fully answer it because I will make a video for this :-) instead.

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      So I am looking to start putting these videos together but to teach everything step by step would be insane the video would be probably an hour long to avoid that I will break it up into separate steps then create a playlist for each one I would like to know if you have any input on what you would like to see first. I am thinking 1 Building activities with the Harmony Hub which my Chris at Majestechs might already have a video for I will see if he is interested in building a series with me.

    • @georgemolnar1231
      @georgemolnar1231 7 років тому +1

      Building activities with the Harmony Hub would be a great starting point as long as it included how to do some of the stuff that is not obvious like waking up a computer. Maybe a series of videos that pick one cool activity like controlling drapes and an explanation of how to actually make it work? Then the videos could be shorter. Thanks for getting back to me and keep up the great videos!

    I was curious about your computer setup that allows you turn it on by voice using IFTTT. Is your desktop always on and the harmony turns on the TV or do you have something in your CPU that allows for Harmony to connect to it? My goal is to walk in my room and tell Google Home to turn on my computer without having to walk to the other side and hit the button.

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      From my research IFTTT uses tokens and API keys to communicate with other services so the risk is small as your passwords and usernames are not stored on the IFTTT servers, Remember no matter what anyone says nothing in this planet is 100% Secure and they will always be someone trying to circumvent it.

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      So far minimal issues if you're using it with the google home or the amazon echo the main problem with the Harmony is the smartphone App itself I did not buy it to use it with the my smartphone much I bought it as an extension to my home automation setup and its great for that

    • @soulassasin001

      I'm mostly hearing about connection issues alot of the posts say it's very inconsistent with connecting to other devices.

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому +1

      I don't have any of those issues with the harmony hub. I setup these units professionally and yes not all harmony remotes are created equal you can't compare a harmony to a URC remote neither but they can be very good remotes if setup and used properly the worst harmony remotes are the Harmony 350,650, 700 or anyone of them that do not have the HUB as a blaster those are extremely inconsistent as for connecting to other devices the harmony has a learning feature so even if a device is not supported it can learn the IR codes. I would not invest money on a harmony with no hub

    great video ! do you think this would work for Google home to operate by kwikset 910 z-wave lock ?
    thanks

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      +sitnlow4life the Google home will work with that lock if you have the proper hub unfortunately ifttt is only software and zwave devices require a hub that is capable of transmitting a zwave signal such as the smartthings hub or the wink I hope this helps don't forget to subscribe my next video will explain this better

      Breaking Elegance my apologies I left out that I have a smart things hub already setup with the lock .
      I just wanted to control it with my Google home .
      IFTTT worked perfectly ! thanks for the great video

    • @BreakingElegance

      +mirza memic if you have a wink hub or a philips hue hub connected to the light yes if not then no. The hue hub and the wink are supported so it's the only way for the bulb to communicate with ifttt and the Google assistant

    • @BreakingElegance

      Hi again. I've tried to follow your ways, and have most everything set up except for a working IR receiver. I tried the FLIRC IR receiver but had no luck getting it to work. Can you recommend which IR receiver you are using? If this doesn't work, I might end up going the bluetooth route. Thanks again.

      Sorry to Hear that once i get back to my PC i will check my IR receiver but I myself was looking into switching to a bluetooth module which I already have just was lazy to configure because the IR was very inconsistent and I hate needing to be in line of sight

    great video. I'm having issues , I've conect both my Google assistant, and my lights (yeelight ) and in the 'if' section of the recipe , it keeps telling me I need to add '$’ , it's really stumped me.
    if you reply ,I'll be able to upload a screen shot via Google+ . irritating me to death. I just want to turn my light off with out standing up and walking lol.
    well the yeeligjt ap lets me do that, but I want to do it via voice and I need assistant for that .

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      Stephen Butler on the if section you're supposed to select the Google assistant then make sure you select simple phrase and create something like turn on my light then on the that section make sure you select your yeelight and set that to on if that is what you tried and it's not working that is a little bit weird I don't have a yeelight unfortunately I have test lifx lightify and Philips hue

    • @StephenButlerOne
      @StephenButlerOne 7 років тому +1

      I just deleted the applet and started again , I must of selected a diffent option, bot it working about 10 mins ago. But thanks you for your effort.
      I got the xiaomi mi Yeelight RGB, It's really cool and doesn't need a hub of any kind. If you attach your bulbs via there online server, you can control your bulbs (I only have one for it today) and see their status over cellular.
      Got this one as a lazy way to wire a bulb into my attic, saves me running 40 feet of cable back down to a switch.
      I don't have Google home, just using assistant ony pixel ATM. But this may be what pushes me over the edge.

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      Stephen Butler that's great LIFX doesn't require a hub either but it still forms a mesh network as it turns one of the lights into a hub do you know if the yeelight does that?

    • @StephenButlerOne
      @StephenButlerOne 7 років тому

      Breaking Elegance I'm not sure, but I don't think so. You can group them from withing the app in to rooms all with indevidual functions . You have the choice of keeping them local, or if you sign up to their account ,your set up is on their server , and you control it by sending a request to their server. There is a slight delay but nothing major. Quicker to react than the older energy saving bulbs.
      The app has lots of funtions to, like scheduling , sleep timer, music mode and a Dev mode, plus the ifttt.
      The future is here.
      I wouldn't be able to test to see if it creates a mesh , as I only have one, got it as a test. One I'm really happy with .
      I think there is another officsl app to called yee hub or something, so I'll be trying that out to at see point, bit ATM , if it ain't broken ......
      I'll check out the lifx, first I've heard of them . The Philips for me is to expensive as a toy .

    Can you tell me all the partners/devices that work with Google home

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      In the beginning it was Phillips, SmartThings and Nest they just added Honeywell, and Wemo. Yes the list is still small but if you have a smartthings hub and use IFTTT the possibilities are endless

    • @atyabm2183
      @atyabm2183 7 років тому +1

      Breaking Elegance I've looked and the list now goes up to harmony which people used to use ifttt for now but don't have to. Lifx, Wimo, Honeywell and many more are. Homes slowly catching up to the possibilities of Echo.

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      Good catch on the update I don't see the harmony on my list maybe i need to re-install the app, but it would be great to skip ifttt and communicate directly with my harmony

    I've dabbled with home automation and smart home devices since the 90's. I've personally been a fan of the idea all these years. I have had some enlightening experiences as well, like purchasing a smart vacuum and then it running over DOG POOP...smearing it throughout the entire house! Right now I'm in the process of purchasing different products off of smartcookiestore.com and Amazon.com, but am wondering if you guys know maybe there is a better place to search?

    • @BreakingElegance
      @BreakingElegance  7 років тому

      I am guessing that the Shield is using HDMI CEC to turn on and off the tv. that's good to know thanks for the info. you can turn on and off your tv with the chromecast also using HDMI CEC. the problem is when you have other devices on your tv that do not support HDMI CEC. I am using a chromecast on HDMI 1 and a Android tv box on HDMI 2 on my other samsung tv in the same room. If the Shield is using another technology to turn on the tv like an IR let me know I am interested.
