- So I am looking at Opera Rose. Yes that bright, neon, put your sunglasses on pink. It is much loved and loathed in the watercolour world. I take a look at how it behaves.
If you want to order any of the Operas or Opera alternatives check them out below:

Thank you. I love opera rose and it’s a must in my pallet.
Thank you for a excellent video
Glad you liked it!
You already know what I think of this color!! Haha :)
I gotta grab Bengal Rose eventually, it's so bright!
HAHA I thought of you while making this. I think bengal rose might even be more neon that opera not sure how that's possible!
Ambidextrous Dan! I didn’t know that about you. How cool. 👍🏼 gorgeous samples thanks for the info.
I would disagree that Opera Rose is only useful for mixes.. there is a lot of flowers like Pink Hollyhocks that cant do justice without Opera Rose.. I think I read somewhere that claim the reason Daniel Smith has an Opera Pink is because botanical artist ask them to make it...
And clothing desging etc. i actually feel mroe useful in without mixing. i dont yet own and depends lot of things if i get it (Schimcke version) how well is reproductable in CMYK printing.
I really like this color in watercolor. I like the different techniques done in your swatch 🎨
I love that Bengal Rose! Love Opera Rose, I have it from W&N, and from Jackson's, Opera Pink from DS, and Opera from HWC... so far, lol. I like the Jackson's and DS the best, which both lean very slightly more toward a purplish magenta. I don't know that I'd use it on something I wanted to frame and hang, but it's awesome for my watercolor sketchbook.
Lovely color I for one love vibrant colors
fluorescent colors makes the non-fluorencence colors sharing similar hue dull and earthy looking LOL
I would say best way is to know how color works and paint bright colors by manipulating color relationships as desired.
Lol, I’ve been planning this same video for foreverrrrr and even collected all my rose operas and similar colors, swatches them, annnnnnd.....hahahaha. My favorite actual opera rose is the one from sennelier, which is way less vibrant than the ones from Daniel Smith and mission Gold so MY perfect replacements are Daniel smith Quin rose, quor’s something something (Quin magenta, maybe?), and sennelier’s magenta. I’m very much guilty of loving opera rose and had to find a replacement back when I did the Alice in wonderland Oysters piece for the animal artists collective. I was at peak addiction at that point. =>.
Great demonstration. I was wondering whether to try Opera Rose as it is recommended by Billy Showell, whose online courses I am following. You have convinced me to give it a try. Thank you!
thank you for the video!🌻
I have both Windsor and Newton and Holbein Opera Rose, but I prefer the W&N as the Holbein is cooler and closer to Magenta. Still don't know how to feel about fugitive colors. I think I could do with perm. rose and magenta instead.
I have the Schminke 2017 opera rose which is insanely bright. I hope to use it in a mix with quin majenta for some orchid studies. I know they will take a fade hit over time but think that the addition of a quin colour will at least leave a decent image eventually. Only opera can give that intensity of colour in the real orchids. I keep wondering if there is a UV additive that could give OR an additional protection, like sunscreen for watercolour....
That's a great thought! I'm surprised if there isnt one not just for the sake of opera but for all fugitive colours.
There is. You can put your painting behind UV glass instead of plain glass when framing it...
Still on the fence but I’m about to go to Amazon and fall off 😅.
Very interesting. I was actually curious about Rhodonite genuine and Schmincke's PV42 the most, but you ended up not choosing them for your comparison. Is it maybe possible to add a scan with the added colors in the description? If not possible or too much of a hassle - no worries. Nice video!
Palmira Farkash rhodonite genuine changes colour due to oxidisation and is a different hue fromthe rest. I used pv42 from old holland. Glad yiu enjoyed it will look at scanning the image.
I know that about Rhodonite - I actually prefer the color it changes to over the original :) It a softer baby pink, almost antique pink, and great for soft florals IMO. When poured into a pan and dried, the top of the pan already oxidizes and you get the end color straight from the pan. But when you dig into the pan, you get the color as it comes out from the tube. Such a strange and unique color lol
Also, according to Dr Oto opera rose doesn’t scan well either. :(
sadly it doesn't :(
I don’t think I’d find a use for Opera Rose as I can get nice oranges and purples with my DS colors
it definetly makes some nice violets!
what paint this bengal rose is ? i mean brand.
Bengal Rose is Gouache from Winsor & Newton
