  • After all the liner patches, the pond still leaks! At this point I am willing to try anything. I had some Bentonite in the shop, but I was hesitant to use it. Although it is often used to control leakage in ponds and such, it has never been used in conjunction with a mechanical liner........until now.

HaHa! It has been 2 summers and I haven't finished the pond! This summer I hope to finish it. The Bentonite has worked, but it needs to be cleaned and I hope that won't effect it. Stay tuned!

You should have waited to turn the water back on and at least for the area that we're dry which I thought all of them were beforehand, spray them with the spray bottle of water let them tear and set up and then turn to the pumps and water on so that it wouldn't have gotten washed around everywhere else. Anyway, food for thought I guess it's too late anyway hopefully it work and ruin everything lol

In hindsight, you may be right. However the pond is holding water, and we will see how it performs when I finally finish it, hopefully later this summer.

Bentonite clay it is an extremely effective substance used in sealing water bodies and plugging holes in structures like wells and dams. This product is a completely natural substance, with no chemical additives, therefore it is fully safe to use around fish, plants, and livestock.
However , the tiny micro-particles of bentonite could attach to the fishes gills and cause them to suffocate due to lack of oxygen.
I don't have fish in my pond, but I do have plants and they are thriving. I hope that helps you.

Yes it worked! I know it has been a while, and I still haven't finished the pond! Hopefully I can get back to it this summer.
Just a thought here. I think the bentonite worked because there is very little turbulence on the bottom of the pond.

It did work. The pond is holding water, however I did not get back to finishing this spring. I am hopeful that the winter is mild and I can get to it soon.
