Turkey Is An Asset To NATO || Debate #3

  • Often regarded as the bridge linking together Europe and Asia, Turkey has been part of NATO for more than 65 years. But some wonder whether NATO truly benefits from Turkey’s membership, particularly with the country’s potential turn toward authoritarianism under president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. And with the Turkish leader cozying up to Russia and China, we ask: Is Turkey still an important ally to the West?

    Here is some facts:
1-Turkey asked for Patriot missiles for several years and got rejected each time therefore they turn to Russians for S-400.
2-Turkey asked NATO and USA for assistance at the beginning of the Syrian conflict to avoid and control the Russian boldness in the region, the answer was no.
3-Turkey asked EU, US and NATO to consider them as main proxy-director of policies and military movements on Syria and ISIS, the answer was no.
4-Apart from middle East conflicts Turkey is waiting on EU doors for many years, despite they have a more powerful economy and developed structure then many other EU members the answer was a witch hunt and these are before anyone find Erdoğan as an Authoritarian/Islamist, the most honest answer came from Germany's Merkel who said "EU is an Christian union".
5-There were a ceasefire and peace process with P.K.K terrorist group and they broke it as they looked the Syrian and Iraqi situation as failed states which could result in Kurdistan Independence, Therefore they began terrorist operations all over Turkey for destabilizing the state, all of the attacks are documented in the news which in every single one of them the operators came from Southern borders with Iraq and Syria, and again all of them had logistic support from Y.P.G.
6-The failed coup hurt Turkey so much both humanitarian and economically, that night there were at least 260 innocent casualties which have not priority of mentioning in western medias, the Turks have a pile of evidence and open-court documents which links the Gülen Network to the coup, yet none of the Europeans or US prosecute/extradite the felons.
7-The P.K.K had been listed as terrorist organisations by US and EU, yet they are fully active in these countries and get media coverage often with a picture of their leader Abdullah Öcalan in their hands, you can search pictures of them all over the world including in Syria ,protesting while waving the P.K.K flag and Öcalan's pictures. Now you add that all of the main NATO allies of Turkey are helping them in Syria.

You can see arrogance of "The West" simply by this question. Turkey is an asset to Nato? First of all, Turkey is not an "asset" of "your balance sheet", but a sovereign country with its own interest. An alliance should balance the interests of members, any member should not look others as an "asset" to benefit from.

And we are the only one country confronted ISIS on the ground and had lost so many great soldiers.

As for the Eastern Mediterranean, Mr. McCurk, please look on the map and lecture yourself about geography of Turkey and see it yourself that it has almost 2000 km costline in the eastern mediterranean. Greeks are claiming the entire eastern mediterranean as their own, denying Turkey any claim in the region. If you think Turkey would accept such a status quo then you must be very naive.
I think what is difficult for you to accept is that, Turkey is no longer a puppet that it was once. Get over it man!, she has grown up and going her own way that suits her the most.

The only reason they want Turkey to remain in NATO and be on the western side is just to not have Turkey as an enemy in case of a conflict or even WW3 in future. This completely means, being friend with someone you don't like, just so if you fight, that friend can help or at least won't be on your enemy's side.

Turkey is one of the top 5 contributors to NATO missions.
Turkey supported the NATO Misson in Afghanistan when Article 5 of the Washington Agreement was evoked by the US.
It has extensive hard and soft power capabilities. It has the second-largest army and the only predominantly Muslim country.
Turkey has a 911km border with Syria, so unlike a country that has been making efforts to apply its inconsistent foreign policy strategy across-continents to shape the region to cater to its preferences, Turkey is facing concrete national security threats daily due to the instability in the region.
Turkey has been fighting with PKK, which is regarded as a terrorist organization by the US, since 1984. This terrorist group uses the same training camps, administration, and funding with YPG/PYD.
The weapons which were supposed to be taken back from the YPG/PYD, as it was promised by Washington D.C., after the operation against ISIS was completed, is now being used against the Turkish army.
Turkey hosts many NATO bases within the country.
Turkey asked to purchase the Patriot Missle system from the US and other NATO allies but did not receive a positive response before the negotiations between Turkey and Russia started.
Russia is an important factor in this region, whether you like it or not, and even though Turkey and Russia do not see eye to eye in all foreign policy issues, including Syria, the two countries find a way to cooperate. This situation does not imply an axis shift, it only means Turkey is employing its diplomatic channels to safeguard its national interests.

And millions of people supports him because of the future of our country. So losing elections in big cities doesnt mean anything as that is mentioned. They didn't mentioned that under former Turkish Min.President Davutoğlu, (at the very beginning of the Syrian conflict) US, Turkey (TR) and other allies openly started to form an opposition force in Syria (Free Syrian Army) trained in TR, armed by US and paid by Saudies but then ISIS fell from the sky and US (Obama admin.) turned to YPG/PKK why ? Because forming a Kurdish state in this turmoil in north Syria at TR border (where Kurds always been in minority) is a more important strategic target for US (and for Israel) than to overthrow Basher Assad. And wherever ISIS was pushed away w. US air strikes then YPG/PKK just occupied that area but then Russia & Iran stepped in and they (Russia & US) started to coexist there (east & west of Euphrates river). After Davutoğlu, TR offered US several times to cooperate with its regular Ally than a terrorist organization like PKK/YPG which is literally against TR (an US-Ally) !! So we all saw that US chose YPG/PKK instead of TR, trained and delivered them 50.000 (Fifty Tausend) Trucks military material !!. What a wise decision ? Now some people ask in US: Who lost TR as an Ally? We as Turkey do not need an US-Ally which behaviours like that (not to forget the support of the military coup).

Unlike others he understood the reasons why Turkey acted in a specific way, even if it was wrong, or at least looked wrong in the eyes of the US.
McGurk on the other hand brought up hypocritical arguments. Things that happend in reality and the things that he said were contradictionary.

US over played her hand and needs to realize that and reconcile the relation by moving away from supporting YPG/pkk, turn over Gulen and cut a deal in the eastern Mediterranean so both can benefit. This requires a mindset shift and US should approach Turks exactly the opposite she deals with Arabs. As long US talks with the tone of that guy in the very right she will lose Turkey. Probably US weapon lobby and/or EU petrol lobby that uses NATO/USA as their cheap or even free of charge slave army.
You do not need to be a intelligence officer, body language, facial expression, social behavior etc. expert to understand that someone lie, manipulating and/or does not even believe in the things those comes from their mouth. ''Turkey Is An Asset To NATO'' Is a pretty neo colonial topic to discuss because Turkey is an independent country with its own interests and if some of its interests allign with other NATO's interests thats fine. You cant have a NATO in which every country's interests allign with each other.
If NATO is active in Mexican-American border whose interests should be the piority? Turkey's or American?
NATO has to cooperate with Turkey if its active in Turkey's backyard.
McCurk said that the YPG never attacked Turkey from Syria before Turkey's operation. Thats right but very manipulative. The YPG attacks Turkey by entering Turkish territory, changing its name to the PKK since the YPG is a PKK branch and does terror attacks WITHIN Turkey.
Many jihadists managed to get to Syria from Turkey, thats right but back then NATO was arming those jihadists as wel and most of them weren't ISIS. Those Jihadists also came from other NATO (west european) countries who were trying to dump them into Syria to get rid of them. Why is the source(west europe) of those jihadists not being questioned?
When ISIS was on Turkey's border, Turkey asked for a buffer zone at its border from NATO, declined.
Why should Turkey be responsible to clean up ISIS while other nations were just relaxing? ''Turkey didn't attack ISIS back then'', the conflict is literally right at its border, they will feel the consequences directly if they do anything alone. Its a world problem, not just a problem for Turkey.

1- In the early 1950s, by taking advantage of the ineptitude politics of the Islamist Menderes government (an Islamist predecessor of Erdogan), America was able to impose a Marshall Plan on Turkey, which could not create a sustainable welfare process as consultants coming from the USA had insisted on unilateral economic policies and Turkey was directed towards military spending due to being seen mainly as a buffer state against the Soviet Union and Middle East. It can be also said that arrangements arising from double standards in the application compared to European countries caused economic instabilities in the long run. Later, Turkey was lured into the Nato and the country that once was manufacturing its own planes (in the 1930s-40s) was stripped off its economic, agricultural and industrial capabilities. Well, it's quite obvious that the Nato and the West have been exploiting Turkey for 66 years. If Turkey tried to leave the Nato and close down 40 American military installations on Turkish soil, it would face serious problems. Getting rid of global vultures isn't that easy, once they circle over you.
2- By the way, a very important question, which every single levelheaded person should ask, is who created ISIS. There lies the answer for all the misery.
3- Why doesn't anybody elaborate the fact why the West is in an urgent need for and weaponizes one terror organization to fight another?

McGurk I can't see why you are being so dishonest. Turkey does not want to push Greece to side. Throughout the Erdoğan's government years (17 years now), Greece has de facto invaded around 28 Turkish islands and islets. Some of these islands are certificated by League of Nations (forerunner of United Nations) for being Turkish territory. Why they do this? Because in 2003 USA released the information that there is oil and gas in the Mediterranean Sea. Using these de facto invaded islands and islets, Greece claims a huge portion of Turkey's marine shelf to get the oil and gas rights in there. So now, everyone working against Turkey to deprive Turkey out of its rights in the Mediterranean. Israel, Southern Cyprus, Greece, England, Egypt, Palestine, Italy, France... so many countries have signed a mutual agreement deal on these gas and oil. We Turkish people, we are one of the main right owners in these resources. However, they do not even care. They even plan to make a new pipeline through Mediterranean Sea to bypass Turkey on the gas's arrival into Europe. And they plan the pipeline through Turkish marine shelf, which is now claimed by Greece using these newly invaded islands and islets. And European Union, by 2018, has a defense agreement similar to Nato. Why? To scare Turkey against making a move against these unlawful moves done by Greece. Disgraceful. Humankind has no shame obviously.

Trying to solve the issue through diplomacy was fruitless over the years, and the more Turkey waited the more the terrorists got stronger and grew bigger in numbers. What was Erdoğan supposed to do? Listen to the directives of the US until one day YPG comes knocking our door with a claim on our lands? Many of my fellow Turkish citizens have the tendency to follow two paths on debating all their arguments. One is the formal Turkish government line of thought, based on maximalistic arrogant ottoman style views and strategies.
The other is an emotional approach, not suitable for honest people as they claim to be, as for example we occupy Northern Cyprus for so many years because we are protecting our brothers and sisters. The same hypocrisy applies to self explain Lybia a little variation in Syria though "it's the Kurds there that are
terrorists" that give us the right to trespass into Syria and perform all the aggressions necessary.
The truth is unfortunately much more cynical than that. Turkish elite has become greedy for wealth and power only belonging to other nations. However what really comes out in unison with their robast imposition of order is their pervert ottoman ambition
authoritarianism and aggressive anger deeply rooted in the Turkish psycke for those finding them unagreeable.

1- When the time comes that the Turkish Cypriot's rights are equally recognized and represented in the EU and the World only then we may consider to withdraw from there (but as long as Greek Cypriots continue to ignore the Turkish Cypriot existence we will continue to be there as their guarantor country provided by international treaties). This has nothing to do with emotions but only with justice and about protecting the Turkish Cypriots' interests.
2- About Lybia, the UN-recognized official government invited Turkey to help them against those trying to overthrow their government. So Turkey has a justified existence in Lybia unlike hypocritical western states supporting Haftar who is trying to overthrow the official government
3- About Syria, we will continue to fight and destroy all terror organizations existing there (PKK, YPG, DEASH etc) no matter which country supports them, end of story. If there is any country that wants to host these terror groups, you can take them all to your country, away from Turkey and its borders. But if you try to weaponize them against Turkey, you will always see Turkey in front of you.
Turks are peaceful people. But anyone who threatens our core existence, our independence, our land, we will always unite as one and defend our country!

@@costasyiannourakos6963 The Republic of Cyprus was established in 1960 as a constitutional partnership state, based on the political equality of the two constituent peoples of the island, the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. Contrary to common belief, the Cyprus problem did not emerge with Turkey’s military intervention in 1974, but in 1963 when the Turkish Cypriots were ejected from the island’s government and faced attacks by Greek Cypriot guerilla bands. The Greek Cypriots openly sought to unite the island with Greece, a process they called Enosis, but which was expressly forbidden by a treaty guaranteeing the independence of the island. It was at this time that a Green Line was drawn across Nicosia and the United Nations established its presence on the island. As violence subsided, Greek Cypriots nonetheless continued their drive for Enosis, forcing Turkish Cypriots to live in ethnically homogenous enclaves. Efforts by Turkey to move the international community to stop the slow ethnic cleansing and continued crimes against Turkish Cypriots were futile. In 1974, after the bloody attempt by the Greek military junta to annex the island to Greece caused an eruption of violence against the Turkish Cypriots, Turkey militarily intervened. The resulting separation of the two communities on the island halted the violence and preserved the Turkish Cypriots from destruction. Turkey’s intervention was not only an urgent moral imperative; but also, a legal obligation as stipulated by the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee that established Cyprus as an independent state.
Following the 1974 intervention the international community failed to acknowledge the rights of the Turkish Cypriots while unjustly vested solely the Greek Cypriots with the right to govern the island. This shocking result continues to reverberate today and has made efforts to reunify the island exceptionally difficult. Regrettably, rather than seeking a solution, the main focus of the Greek Cypriots is to preserve this illegal and illegitimate advantageous position, as demonstrated by their popular refusal to unify the island under a UN-brokered peace plan.
TCA supports a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem based on the parameters of bi-communality, bi-zonality and political equality for all Turkish Cypriots - exactly the principles favored by the United Nations and the United States. TCA deplores the inhuman isolation and illegitimate embargoes imposed upon the Turkish Cypriots and calls upon the international community to end them. This would serve as an incentive for the Greek Cypriot side to make progress in the ongoing UN negotiation process and reach a settlement in Cyprus.
“If the Greek Cypriots are ready to share power and prosperity with the Turkish Cypriots in a federal
structure based on political equality, this needs to be demonstrated, not just by word, but by action”
United Nations Security Council. Report of the Secretary-General
on his Mission of Good Offices in Cyprus (S/2004/437). 28 May 2004).

Look I've been critical of Turkey's current administration but seriously NATO let down Turkey several recent times and consequently complains that Turkey is taking a different direction. Just wow!

You need more information about this region. Don’t critise what you don’t understand. Your countries are economical with the truth. Turkey have to protect its borders. Your countries always say Turkey is our friend but Turkey feels as if it is stabbed on its back. So, If you consider Turkey is a friend, you should reflect this to your actions without lies.

Where do you get your information from ? Kurds do not represent 30% of the population of turkey, and most Kurds are integrated and live happily and are doing extremely well in business and politics, you so called experts should mine your own business and stop meddling in our country.

Have asked yourself: Why NATO is still alive? NATO was created as an active military organisation against Russia. So, do you see Russia as enemy? Why you are so aggressive? Resources of other countries are the interests of EU & US, which is the another method of occupation and colonization.
