  • In the first of this two-part series, professional artist Trudy Friend takes you through a series of small exercises which highlight the key techniques to accurately capturing trees in pencil.
Trudy starts by demonstrating the various pencil techniques required for creating realistic barks, branches and surrounding foliage before moving on to capture shapes, shadows, texture and the trailing leaves of a Willow Tree.

I hope I can say this coherently, because it was an important connection that suddenly came to me. I like to draw and use color, but I have no training. However, I am a trained singer. In drawing, I have always concentrated on the image that was forming; but as a singer i have known very well to mind the body processes and energy flow, and let the music look after itself to a very great extent. Not doing so gives one a very cramped and lifeless result. What I've just been watching you do with the pencil is the close analogy of what a string player does with a bow to feed the energy into the vibrating and resonating surfaces so the sound can be released. Not forced, not squeezed, just set free.I
I would say it was magical, but it's better than that. It's the common sense physics of technique that you trust yourself to use. Thank you for this demonstration!

If you sing with as much conviction as you write, in fact if you do ANYTHING with that much passion, you must dominate the stage! Well said!

yeah, they are greatvids, she's a great teacher. Those pencils are good for shaving off graphite onto paper for when you want to blend in a sky, or background trees etc using cotton wool or tissues to blend. Just random blending then create trees in background where you feel the blending resembles trees :) Kind of like bob ross style but with drawing. Check out smoothie77 vids to see what I mean.

Kohl-I-Noor Progresso Woodless Pencils. She says this very fast in the beginning; it's hard to make out.

Such a mature hand. It sounds as if I'm receiving instruction from Mrs. Doubtfire!
