I love Portrait Artist of the Year but the higher quality of these artists was so impressive. All these artists deserved to be there which is not always true at PORTRAIT ARTIST OF THE YEAR. Now I have 2 series to love!
For several years I was part of a painting group like this. We would paint a model and for whoever had time, would stay after the session to critique and discuss the work. We loved art and loved just talking about it. It was a very valuable time because you could see what other people thought was successful or not so successful on a piece. I don’t get why they need a winner. Who cares. I would rather know what people’s problems were while painting and if they overcame them, how they did it.
Well done @rawumberstudios A great piece of work and super production. I love the difference and overlap in approach by the painters. And, Charlie P is just ace. Please keep this running and kick PAOTY into touch.
Yes, we took the decision that everybody should paint from life. To be fair to PAOTY artists, their set up (celebrity models who can't stay still, lighting optimised for TV and not the artists) means they don't really have the choice.
I don't get the people complaining about it being a competition. I think they're fun to participate in and they've pushed me to do some of my best work. But i also go into them knowing that there is a degree of subjectivity to judging art so i don't take the results (successful or not) too seriously. If you don't like them don't do them, but don't discourage those of us who like them
That was SO much better than the utter nonsense that is POATY. Obviously, the idea had occurred me of doing something like this on my channel, but the production costs were too much, so well done!
I see people complaining about competition's but people are overlooking the fact they are getting a lot more people to see these artists and that alone can be huge for an artist. Yes there can be some down sides but there's a lot more positives in my mind.
@@TonySwabyMy thought exactly, Tony. What is it, that there always has to be a winner? Apart from that I really enjoyed this exquisite choice of masters, thanks everyone who participated❤
@@torstenwolberart1211 I creates a subliminal implication of expectations of outcome. Which creates more of the same kind of art. "Break free people do it your way!"😁
@@TonySwaby Absolutely. I had to totally step back from doing commissions last year, because I realized that back in my mind I still want to please the client. Was the right thing to do, now I couldn’t care less if they like it or not, if I’m happy with it, that’s all that matters.😊
Yeah my top 3 were Romer, Ruth and Stewart. I love his colours. It was close, but I ended voting for Romer as it was such a good likeness of Tatiana. I've seen many paintings of her over the years and people often struggle with it.
So glad to find a painting group not allowed to take photos! Hated with PAOTY how the artists would get very close to the sitter with their cameras, tablets etc, then never look at the sitter again. Some really great portraits here, thank you
Painting videos like these are great for us to see different approaches by each artist. I have a question regarding lights that were attached to some easels. Does anyone know what kind of lights they were using and are these typical lights painters often use? I use LED tube light for filmmaking with a decent CRI rating which I can toggle color temperature and intensity. I wonder what other painters recommend.
@@renzo6490 She just shared her opinion. Every artist is controversial to some degree and Sargent is no exception. Meeting and sharing insights is part of the art. No bravery here.
I wish the presenters of the show would just let the painters get on with what they doing instead of interrupting them with mundane questions - so irritating!
@@RawUmberStudiosso you're still persisting in your spurious disposition, and really actually think that making art has anything to do with having a "good day"? Smgdh 🥸
What a lot of pretentious crap. The ONLY difference between modern good painters and BAD painters is MONEY ! Art; the pretentious playground of the bored, unskilled middle and upper classes who need to find fulfilment in an otherwise unproductive life.
Remember that the modern period ended many years ago. All art created now is contemporary. Also, by its own definition, saying that something is pretentious is pretentious in itself, so you're being pretentious 😅. And it's no wonder that you dislike pretentiousness, because we hate what we dislike in ourselves.

@@jaynedoe80 Let's put it this way then. Would you accept her statement if she had the same success as Sargeant? No, right? 🧐 Because what you said is nonsense.
I'm trying to give her the benefit of analysing what she meant due to her obvious credentials but I'm struggling. Is it in context of creating photo realism with paint being the only acceptable outcome? Then all qualified artists work would result in the same painting so what's the point? Enjoying the medium you're working with and letting it inform the life of the work is one of the reasons we love it isn't it? It became more confusing when I loved the "painterly" stroke on her piece telling us the parameter of the models noggin. Maybe she meant if Sargent had loads of time for a portrait and he kinda effected the work with a painterly effect in a more contrived manner, almost like the client requested it, but I'm not qualified to see this for myself.

Nothing fancy - just something to get a bit more light on the painting without affecting the light on the model!
