Great video mate. I tend to go with the trusty tarp tent setup. Although I've been meaning to give your 'Gunyah' setup a go. Those Alton Goods 3x3 are just about the perfect tarp. So many tie outs with so many setup options!
Well done man, I was almost not going to watch cause I didn't think it would be all that interesting, but that was pretty cool and I'm about to pull the trigger on an Alton goods tarp. I hope you are keeping safe over there mate, and when you come out of lockdown I'd really love to see a few old school multi day hiking/survival trips with map and compass navigation, comparing where you nav with the map and where you end up on GPS in post. Maybe chuck in a bit more first person view of traversing some of the sections for a more immersive feel. And if you get adventurous it would be awesome if you did some 360 VR vids. There's a video of two guys hiking in to the Colorado river on Oculus videos and then using inflatable rafts to head down the river. It's one of the most immersive outdoors vids I've seen. If you have access to a Quest 2 you should be able to find it. Just some ideas to keep in fresh in parallel with what you are doing. You're a national treasure mate. Love your work. Dead Set Legend.
I grabbed some paper and made origami tarps as I watched :) It's an easy way to compare the inside space when they're all set up in front of you. The Gunya setup looks easy to raise and swap between open & closed up.
OF COURSE! A Y stick to leverage the back wall instead of straight line to peg. Brilliant. So simple I'm irritated I didn't think of it in any tarp trip. :D
Last night I literally thought about going through your old videos to see how you set up your shelters. Great vid and great timing. Rad channel and content 😎
Camped under a Hootchie while in the Army. Pros - lightweight, versatile Cons - Mozzies, Sandflies, Bull Ants, Centipedes and an over-curious King Brown. Used a lightweight tent ever since but cudos to those who persist with Tarp Camping.
I thought I knew most tarp shelter configurations, but I’ve never seen the first 2 in your video. Well done! I really liked those. I’ll be trying them out this season. Thanks for sharing this. I also liked the instruction and videography. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber. 👍👍
I love your videos and I love the fact that you show everyone that tarps are a good choice for shelter. When I am with my dog, I prefer a tarp shelter. I just anchor her lease to the ground and we have all the room and air flow that is available.
I’m a recent viewer to your channel and have been doing a lot of catch up from about 3 years ago. I was hooked from the start. I love your passion and empathy for your surroundings and the environment. My husband hates camping so I live my dreams through your videos. Not a huge fan of fishing but love all other aspects of your hikes. Many thanks for keeping us truly entertained. Dorset, UK
Thanks Scotty for this clear video. I’ve watched it three times to help me decide whether I can jump to a tarp set up. The gunyah looks great. Tarp life post lockdown for sure.
Just love a tarp shelter. Great for us guys here in the UK where we don't have to worry about to many critters. For ground dwelling, my favourite has got to be a really simple plough point. Great little shelter. Fantastic video mate and some really interesting set ups. Hope that you guys get out of lockdown soon and back out to do your thing. Atb, J 👍.
useful guides! the first one is definitely my favorite, you don't need to muss around too much to set it up, it's roomy, and it doesn't require too many tie-up points
Nice tarp! 👍🏼 I’ve loved using a tarp and Bivvy for over 20years. I can often be found outside on friends balconies or garden. I miss the stars✨ Peppermint oil helps keeps the monsters away.
I've used a version of the "tarp tent" pitch (used to poles at the doorway instead of one) on an exposed bald in the aftermath of a hurricane with 70 mph gusts. Many of the conventional tents were flattened that night, yet my basic tarp was fine.
GREAT pitches!!! I really like the geometries of the first two... I'm looking forward to trying them out ASAP! You Aussies need to start posting more content rather than keeping all the good stuff to yourselves! 😉 👍
I hike with a super cheap blue 4m x 4m Amazon basics tarp.. The best £10 Ive spent. Ive used it for the last 6 or 7 years. I dont plan to spend the night but it gives me shelter from the variable UK weather when I have a food break. One time I camped under it for 3 days when I got stranded. The weather changed and it was safer to camp and wait it out. I use a similar to the arrow head but I peg out the square back corners and put a walking pole under the front to make an opening and a single guy off the front middle, shove a short pole in the rear to giove a little more room. I dont use a tent any more because Ive got wet in every tent Ive ever camped in.. The tarp doesnt leak.
These are some great looking shelters, I'm keen to try them next time I get out! Your pacing and presentation is fantastic, too. Your instructions are clear and concise, with only as many words as needed.
My Fav: Lay tarp/poncho on ground, lay on trop to one side, hold edge and roll. At 3/4 of the tarp/poncho fold foot end over and finish, pulling head end in last. Used in wet weather only as I just flop onto the ground most nights. Moving into my NDP, 30mins after sundown. Spc-Lee A Benson 11B U.S. Army
Hey brother, my name is Lobo and im glad I came across your channel. Great videos!! I bought The Alton Goods tarp, hammock and bug shield after watching your review video. Still waiting for them to be delivered. Appreciate it. Have a good one.
Great ideas! The problem with a forked stick and toggle is you cannot easily adjust the height. I use a straight stick with simple slip knot and the line tension will keep it in place. This way you can quickly adjust the height. The trick is to use a bowline knot at the tarp so you can tuck the line through the loop and hook it over the end of the stick.
I’ve never camped with just a tarp. I always had a tent. Except once, I slept in the back of a truck with my girlfriend. I miss camping. It’s been awhile. Hello from America.
I love these how to videos, it’s nice to learn the basics. I couldn’t choose just one I like them all because they have different uses. Thanks Scotty for another awesome video!
I reckon you could make an awesome book all about tarp shelters, hammock camping, campfire cooking, bush tucka etc. i think you have many people here who would be interested in you doing this mate! just a thought :)
I like having a tarp for its versatility, but I tend to use it for a shade awning, wind shield, rain fly, ground sheet or emergency shelter (never actually had that kind of emergency yet!) rather than as a primary shelter. If you've hiked in a place where it rains a LOT, it's great to quickly string one up to eat lunch and have a proper rest under. I'm interested in getting a bug tent to combine with a tarp, though, for summer camping - the ventilation would be so much better than a tent.
Why would you camp at all in the summer heat and mosquitos? I truly don’t get it. If it’s not cold, this southern man isn’t sleeping outside voluntarily.
Hey Scotty, Just came across your channel after one of my subs recommended you - I’ve just done a tarp video too - great minds! Love those setups mate, not seen that first one before, looks really versatile and adaptable when the weather turns! Lovely video, really enjoyed it! 👊👍
I was directed to your channel via a sub on Simon’s Channel. If you ever come to the UK or he was to go down under, it would be a travesty if you didn’t make a film together!
Awesome ideas. I've been using my standard hootchi just the basic way for so long. Gonna try these out and might purchase the Alton goods one. You need a sponsorship hahahaha
Hey Scotty, I love the idea, but Mozzies would eat me alive. What about the things that go bump in the night. I would feel very exposed. Great review and 5 great configurations for those who love the tarp. Thank you for sharing.
Place a small round stone on the outside of the tarp, on the inside wind paracord around the stone and tie one end off (securing the stone to the tarp , but leaving you a length of cord hanging down on the inside). Then you have a tie-up point for a mosquito net.
I like the idea of the first one, with another tarp at like shoulder level or a little lower just to deflect rain or wind from the entrance by default, and give some sheltered space outside of your actual living space
... When going for a tarp camp ,I generally set the tarp tent or a variation of your first setup but different floor angle ,,still having a floor mat but a choice of either a front or side flap door or staked awning ... good use of an afternoon without plans ... in about 4 hours came up with 2 dozen different set ups .. all with a 3X3 tarp ... if only a trail set up short stay for wind or rain/snow ,,I use a plow point .... much like your first ... using a single tree or hiking staff ..
Excellent video man, thanks for sharing. Sometimes you can not help but use a pole for your tarp set-ups. Personally, I hate the guy lines and the poles. During the night the guy lines are serious tripping hazards (especially if you are partying), and I hate having a pole interrupting my interior open space; so I look for limbs hanging low enough (and strong enough!), for that support. A carabiner tied to paracord (or #36 bank line), lobbed over a tree limb, snap it onto the appropriate tie off point , and heave ho! Pull the cordage to the desired height position, tie it off, and pin your tarp to the ground. Takes me about 40 seconds to have my tarp up, complete, on decent ground/soil. I think it only takes about 1:30 to be entirely soaked from head to toe in a downpour, so knowing how fast you can get your set-up set up is real important. I usually go for the plough point, or the three-sided pyramid, but I have never used a pole with those configurations. Just a personal choice. If a torrential downpour happens instantly you don't really have the time to be so selective. I will use a pole if/when necessary, but it's so much nicer without that obstruction at the entrance, or in the center of the interior. Of course, some configurations require poles/guy lines, but I don't usually set up in those configurations (for exactly that reason). Experimenting with the options a tarp presents is really enjoyable though. I am going to start experimenting with my 10X10. That first set-up you showed is seriously awesome, and I'm gonna' try that one asap. Fortunately, we don't have to worry so much about 'the world's top 10 most poisonous spiders' and 'the worlds top 10 most poisonous snakes' and salt water croc's lurkin' in the billabongs here in rural Ontario, Canada! We got bears and moose and what not, and they are rough enough! You ever catch me camping out in Australia I'll be camping in a camper trailer - not a ground level dinner table!! :) EFF THAT!! Be good, stay safe...and thanks again for sharing!! PEACE!
Really interesting. I tarp camp all the time, and have never seen any of these except the tarp tent. Scotty always has the most interesting tarp configurations. My personal favorite is the tarp tent, but I also like Plow Point and Adarondack.
gunyah looks fantastic, can't wait to try it out. I have a feeling it will become my favourite tarp setup too, although there's not a lot of space for more than one person
Let me know what your favourite tarp shelter set up is?
Bungalow with the raised corner, great video.
Each pitch here is a work of art. I only ever use single pole pyramid tarps though, for quick pitching and weight savings
Great video mate. I tend to go with the trusty tarp tent setup. Although I've been meaning to give your 'Gunyah' setup a go.
Those Alton Goods 3x3 are just about the perfect tarp. So many tie outs with so many setup options!
Bungalow is truly unique, well done scotty it looks absolutely mad

Nice idea. :)
Look up channel "pappa hiker" he does that too. He has many great configs.
Great idea man! I've just started raiding our printer paper!! 🤣
Great idea!
That is unbelievably dorky - which I approve of and endorse 100%.
Imagine my surprise when I found "Scotty's Gunyah" on p.16 of the Alton Goods field guide. Well done mate!
I am a tarp convert because of you.
Spent many years tarping in the army and dismissed it as an option thinking it was just an army thing.
Good old hootchies
OF COURSE! A Y stick to leverage the back wall instead of straight line to peg. Brilliant. So simple I'm irritated I didn't think of it in any tarp trip. :D
That was the best trucker's hitch instruction I have ever seen.
This is awesome. My alton goods 3x3 arrived yesterday and I was in the park having a practice today. Fantastic. Thanks for the vid
Hello from the UK. Thought I'd seen everyway to put up a tarp, three of those were new to me. Great content thank you.
Hey Scotty The Gunyah and tarp tent are absolute game chancer for me I'm 100% using that next time out in the bush
Keep up the great work mate
Last night I literally thought about going through your old videos to see how you set up your shelters. Great vid and great timing. Rad channel and content 😎
One of the best tarp shelter instructionals I’ve seen…well done!
Camped under a Hootchie while in the Army.
Pros - lightweight, versatile
Cons - Mozzies, Sandflies, Bull Ants, Centipedes and an over-curious King Brown.
Used a lightweight tent ever since but cudos to those who persist with Tarp Camping.
Australia sounds like hell for camping 😂
I thought I knew most tarp shelter configurations, but I’ve never seen the first 2 in your video. Well done!
I really liked those. I’ll be trying them out this season. Thanks for sharing this.
I also liked the instruction and videography. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber. 👍👍

Thanks Scotty your videos were the deciding factor to changing over to Alton goods. Can’t be happier

Thanks Scotty for this clear video. I’ve watched it three times to help me decide whether I can jump to a tarp set up. The gunyah looks great. Tarp life post lockdown for sure.

Gonna upgrade all my tarps now!!😂
Just love a tarp shelter. Atb, J 👍.
I dig it! It’s basically an Adirondack style shelter with a floor mat. The aforementioned is my go to
useful guides! the first one is definitely my favorite, you don't need to muss around too much to set it up, it's roomy, and it doesn't require too many tie-up points
Nice mate. Origami tarp construction at its finest. I like the first one and the tarp tent the most.
Nice to see some different ways to set up a tarp
Nice tarp! 👍🏼 I’ve loved using a tarp and Bivvy for over 20years. I can often be found outside on friends balconies or garden. I miss the stars✨ Peppermint oil helps keeps the monsters away.
Realy Nice! Makes me wanna sleep on the ground again instead of sleeping in the hammock 😂💪🏻😍 realy Nice
We used to create some bush palaces back in the army with Hoochie tarps joined together.
Me gustó su configuración ,que buen Refugio, gracias por tu aporte
Love the Gunyah shelter. I've never seen that configuration. Built in ground cloth is very useful where I camp. Thanks, useful video.
That bungalow is pretty cool.
Love a good tarp shelter, hate bugs. I ways pack a hammock with a bug net built in and setup under the tarp lol. These are pretty clever setups.
Thank you for showing these tarp setups! I think the Gunyah will be my new favorit.
This is great, I've seen so many different tarp set ups but most of these are new to me!
I hike with a super cheap blue 4m x 4m Amazon basics tarp.. The best £10 Ive spent.
Ive used it for the last 6 or 7 years.
I dont plan to spend the night but it gives me shelter from the variable UK weather when I have a food break.

I dont use a tent any more because Ive got wet in every tent Ive ever camped in.. The tarp doesnt leak.
Thanks for showing those setups Mr. Scotty. I really like the first one.
Unreal i had no idea of the possibilities of the tarp cheers
Tried out the Gunyah this weekend - worked a treat! Thank you!
The gunyah is genius mate, will be trying that out next camp! Props from the UK
These are some great looking shelters, I'm keen to try them next time I get out!
Your pacing and presentation is fantastic, too. Your instructions are clear and concise, with only as many words as needed.
the first tarp shelter looks really nice. i'll try it next time i go out...thanks a lot...great video
Here are my next 5 shelters for my next 5 outings! thanks man!

3 minutes in and I’m already wanting to see more
Bloody legend mate. Been hanging to see some more of your tarp configuration but in detail. Cheers for the video !!
Tarp origami! Outstanding!
Hey brother, my name is Lobo and im glad I came across your channel. Great videos!! I bought The Alton Goods tarp, hammock and bug shield after watching your review video. Still waiting for them to be delivered. Appreciate it. Have a good one.
Very cool, with the exception of the last one I have not seen those instructions before. Some cool ideas there.
Pyramid was simple and so quick. Also a new one for me.
Great video Scotty. Love the pyramid setup. Shared this video with my dad. Thanks!!!!!
Love the Gunya. Never seen that before. Very well made video. Thank you 👊
Kids, today for home-schooling we're gonna watch Scotty and then go outside and practice these tarps with two hootchies and the 3x3 😉
Love it mate good clear instructions 👍🏻 motivation in these boring lockdown times 🤙🏼
A good video. Showing them as origami will also help some people. I'll be using the 'Scotty Gunyah' this summer on the AT.
Wow I’ve seen plenty of tarp configuration but the first one blew me away, awesome job sir. Can’t wait to go try them.
I’ve never camped with just a tarp. I always had a tent. Except once, I slept in the back of a truck with my girlfriend. I miss camping. It’s been awhile. Hello from America.
Cracking tarp setups , very cool, good health and safe travels my friend, cheers craig
I love these how to videos, it’s nice to learn the basics. I couldn’t choose just one I like them all because they have different uses. Thanks Scotty for another awesome video!
This man has skills.
Great video mate.... love the toggle idea. Cheers from Bonnie Scotland. 👍🏼
I love these chilled out videos. Thanks Scotty. Waiting on the 'alone in the
bush at night, what was that noise spooky compilation.' 🙂⛺🌳🏞
I reckon you could make an awesome book all about tarp shelters, hammock camping, campfire cooking, bush tucka etc. i think you have many people here who would be interested in you doing this mate! just a thought :)
My favotite one...GUNYAH
I like having a tarp for its versatility, but I tend to use it for a shade awning, wind shield, rain fly, ground sheet or emergency shelter (never actually had that kind of emergency yet!) rather than as a primary shelter. Simon and Scotty along with Andy from Kent Survival are my fav bushcraft channels.
I have watched Scotty for ages as he's another Aussie. As I was watching this video I was thinking "Simon just did a tarp video too." :)
No here’s a collaboration I’d like to see Scotty and Simon..? 😁
The bloke finally meets the mate ! Both great channels !
I was directed to your channel via a sub on Simon’s Channel. If you ever come to the UK or he was to go down under, it would be a travesty if you didn’t make a film together!
Nothing beats the A frame
Tarps are the BEST - except for those pesky ticks, mosquitoes, black flies, spiders and every other bug 😆. My favourite was the first one - the Gunya.
When I did a bit of tarp camping last summer, I took a citronella candle (in a tin with a lid). That worked quite well as a bug repellent.
Awesome ideas. I've been using my standard hootchi just the basic way for so long. Gonna try these out and might purchase the Alton goods one. You need a sponsorship hahahaha
So far I've used the last setup on this video, also the plow point which is my go to.
Nice one Scotty. The last one is my favourite. 😀
another great video and enjoy the info. Man you really knows and have the experience. I enjoy your technique to keep things simple and up to the need.
It would be tempting to take two of those tarps and set them up face to face to make a large livable space.
@BiNumLi I have thought about the same thing!
A really great production! Super useful....one to pass around to the contacts!
Good video dude. Definitely considering a tarp shelter for some hiking trips with my dog after lock-down.
Got here from Marty Morissette's YT channel - he loves your Gunyah, and included your link. 👍
Hey Scotty, I love the idea, but Mozzies would eat me alive. What about the things that go bump in the night. I would feel very exposed. Great review and 5 great configurations for those who love the tarp. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah I agree, would be fine in calm warm weather but I would still rather not take my chances with the wind, mozzies, rain and the odd animal.
Place a small round stone on the outside of the tarp, on the inside wind paracord around the stone and tie one end off (securing the stone to the tarp , but leaving you a length of cord hanging down on the inside). Then you have a tie-up point for a mosquito net.
@@billyaitken1713 thank you 🙏🏽
I have to try some of these. Thanks for the post! 🇨🇦
Cracking setups gonna be trying them out over the coming months 👍
I like the idea of the first one, with another tarp at like shoulder level or a little lower just to deflect rain or wind from the entrance by default, and give some sheltered space outside of your actual living space
Well done, I was dubious there would be anything new or unique but you've got a few genuinely unique ones in there. 🎥⛺️🤠👏👏👏‼️
Some amazing setups mate I really like the first one and will be trying to do that this weekend atvb Jimmy from England 🇬🇧 😎😎👍👍
This one is perfect. Thanks for this video. 💪
Some cracking setups .👍🏕
Love the old tarp, so versatile and fun to play about with . Nice vid mate 👌
You finally named your go to shelter! Gunyah is an excellent choice!!
im just starting to do camping ,i like this video
scotty you ingenious bastard, these are great!
Nice, thanks for showing us. Take care.
I get loads of immersion with nature when I open the flaps in my tent.
Really interesting. I tarp camp all the time, and have never seen any of these except the tarp tent. Scotty always has the most interesting tarp configurations. My personal favorite is the tarp tent, but I also like Plow Point and Adarondack.
@NC Grayman I’ll check it out!
Bungalow is new to me, I’ll try it next time 😎
Great video mate. Thankyou
Awesome vid mate. Keep up the great work.
gunyah looks fantastic, can't wait to try it out. I have a feeling it will become my favourite tarp setup too, although there's not a lot of space for more than one person
I am also new to your channel. This is excellent, quick, detailed, and perfect. thank you, Sir
I really like your hat also..
Very noyce, m8. Awesome setups. And the cherry on the cake is "SockStick"
Awesome configs. Pretty sure I saw a couple of them in Star Wars.
