- Whether you live in Bangkok or are visiting, exploring the capital on water is a great choice! The Chao Phraya River offers the chance to visit many of the great sights and temples of this city. And by using a River Boat you'll get fast, efficient transport, much cheaper than a taxi or tour, and a really exciting journey. Another option is heading for the canal. Boats are fast and frequent and offer a totally different perspective of travelling in Bangkok.
But how do you use these boats? There's so many different coloured routes on the public boats on the river, and there's tourist boats and new electric boats as well! Plus, the maps can look pretty confusing. And where exactly does he canal boat take you, and how do you use it? These questions and more are answered in this 10-minute video!

As usual, great video, BC!
At 9:03, the thai guy in white with a white cap is a scammer, trying to have you go to different places than those you wanted to, by saying that those places are unfortunately closed that day!
Many thanks, Alain! I don't normally head to the touristy places, and I was amazed how many people there were trying to sell me things I didn't want at rip-off prices. Guess it's a problem the world over, but shows it's worth doing your research beforehand and sticking to your plan!
Splish splash splosh, another fantastic informative video, I do love my rivers and canals and after seeing this I've put a fun day out seeing the sights by river boat near the top of my to do list. Great stuff... as always 😊
Many thanks for your comment, Jeff. The river boat is certainly fun and you can definitely take in many different sights in a day! I think it's amazing value for money. Obviously there's all the long tail boat drivers down there and people wanting to sell more expensive alternatives. But the orange line seems to go everywhere and is pretty regular. Even off peak you shouldn't wait more than 20 minutes, usually much less. And if you get bored with that there's also the canal boat to explore! Happy travels!
Great video! Thanks forsharing!
Cheers, William. Good to hear your positive feedback!
Just what i was looking for 👍🏻 thx.
Thanks for the feedback. The river boats and canal boats are both great experiences. Enjoy!
I would like to explore some stops along the canal route,
Thanks, PFI! I always thought it was quite difficult. But in reality it's pretty simple once you find the best places to join the canal system. I joined in Asok next to Petchaburi MRT station on the Blue Line. It was really fun! Definitely avoid rush hour and have a look around.
Excellent 👌
Many thanks! 👍
I actually used this service (though not extensively) when I visited Bangkok last. It was not bad and really quite cheap. I actually thought it was a really nice way to get around as a tourist because unlike other means of public transport, you could see quite a bit from your seat and it connected a lot of the major attractions. I would definitely use it again - even though I do not usually love water travel.
Thanks, David. The River Boat definitely gives fantastic views. It's interesting to see so many of the famous sites of Bangkok so close together. And the boat prices are a steal. Obviously, the canal boat doesn't have so nice views. But it will appeal to anyone with a sense of adventure. Many thanks, David, hope you and yours are keeping well!
Informative👍.
Thanks, Anders. Great way to explore!
Love the canal/ river boats, buses 🚌, mrt & bts trains 😅
Me too, Jon. Can't beat a bit of public transport in Bangkok! 😀
@@balloonchaser yes indeed , I need to explore the canals more though
@jonhobson3592 It's fun, as long a you avoid peak hours. Enjoy!
Really enjoyed this BC I need to use the boat system more . So cheap and you get to see another side of the city. I didn’t realise it ran parallel with sukhumvit
Thanks, Jimmy. I hardly used the boats when I lived in Bangkok. But I will now. The river is quite beautiful, especially at night. So, seeing some sights using the river boats is cool! The canal system is another world. Locals use it just like a bus service. But for visitors, it feels more of an adventure. And yes, for part of the route (ekkamai, thonglor, asoke, nana etc) it's about a kilometre from sukhumvit. Almost feels like hidden Bangkok! Give it a go, Jimmy. I'm sure you'll enjoy exploring!
good stuff BC, I hired a narrow boat with a propeller on a stick to do the Bangkok waterways and it was an eye opener. Don't think you'd need a life jacket, one mouth full of that water and your a gonner
Thanks, BB. If you found it to be an eye opener, that may have been your problem. I recommend keeping your eyes closed just in case any spray comes inside the boat 😀. The canal water, in particular, did look and smell a bit iffy at certain points. Although tbf they do have boats fishing out the garbage on route!
There's also an electric canal boat that plies the Khlong Padung Krung from Hualamphong Railway Station to Devarat Market (Thewet Pier) which is FREE!
However, boats are every 20 minutes on weekday rush hours, and hourly on weekends.
Many thanks for adding that, very useful comment. I was aware of the electric boat, but I didn't have time to try it. Would be nice to use it either before or after a local train journey at Hua Lamphong!
San Saep canal boat is great fun for newbies visiting BKK, stops by places like Jim Thompson House, also yes, can to get to Kao San rd (with an added motorbike taxi ride)
Yes, absolutely correct. Actually, on the way back, I jumped off at the stop by Jim Thompsons house. Had a quick look round and then brief walk to National Stadium BTS and then onto an appointment at Siam Paragon. It's pretty convenient, really, and as you say, great fun!
Had the tourist day pass for the boat. B4. Inspired to go on the canal bus now. Be there dec24. Very good vid in shooting editing and information. 😂😂😂
That's a really nice comment, Peter. Thanks a lot! And yes, try the canal boat if you get the chance. It's fun!
If it is still running there is a free boat between Thewarat Market Pier and Hua Lamphong Pier. I think it may only run in the rush hours but if you do another boat video maybe you will want to include it. Enjoyed the video.
Many thanks, I was doing some research beforehand, and that did come up. It's certainly something I'd be interested in trying. As you say, maybe one for the future! 👍
Really like your quirky videos that no one does or knows about
Great watching these but can you make them 15/20 mins instead please 😂
Thanks, Wayne, for the kind remarks! I appreciate that! How long videos should be is always a talking point. Some want shorter, some longer! I might have a members section in the future and put longer versions of videos in there. If there was enough people interested!
Is the 16 Baht flat rate a hop-on/hop-off price?
No, David. That's for any single journey. It's a flat fare so you could get to Nonthaburi for that price. I was told the all day, hop on-hop off pass is 150 Baht. Still not a bad deal and very convenient. Thanks for the question!
The T in the word Tien is an unvoiced/voiceless T. So, it's เตียน not เทียน which as you say means candle and whose T is voiced. เตียน means cut, trimmed & tidy (lawns) or bare & desolate (moutains). You can ask a Thai to pronounce เตียน vs เทียน for you.
Oh, that's very interesting. Thanks for the clarification! My Thai language skills aren't getting any better, but I'll keep trying! 👍
@@balloonchaser But the fact that you already know what เทียน means ....
@VintageThaiLadyBoy My biggest mistakes are when I read it in English, and then think I know the Thai word. I should stick to reading things in Thai. Karaoke transliteration usually makes things worse, not better!
Once again, another informative and useful video. Speaking of the Chao Phraya River, do you plan on covering the Royal Barge Procession in October?
@@PakhwanFromTexas First, an apology. I didn't see this comment as it was under some others that I'd replied to already. Anyway, that's an interesting question. I've not really thought about the Royal Barge Procession, but it would be a spectacular event, that's for sure! Have you been to any previous ones?
