They really captured the tone of day 1 very well. There's a nervous excitement for students.

Yeah, it was heartbreaking to see what happened to him. Randy's story showed how the system can really stamp the light out of someone.

@ROYALTYZ Zzz I agree but it wasn't just that he was in a group home (not foster home, I don't think) that really made me worry for him. It's that they show him bullying a younger kid.

It weakens the teacher's authority, though. If Prezbo can't get the class to quiet down and Randy can, then the students lose a bit of respect for the teacher. A deadly blow on the first day.

I had a couple teachers like him, the one I remember most was in high school like 6 years ago, he got fired for organizing a teachers strike though, and he was Irish not Polish unlike Prez.

I read an account of a teacher who worked at a school in a poor inner city area a long time ago. The classroom here is exactly how he described it. I wouldn't last a day doing that job.
It's sad because this is how it is, first day in my district students fight in school, teacher breaks it up then gets threatened by bangers outside. That was middle school

I went to an alternative school for one term back in eighth grade and this is EXACTLY how the kids would act
I went to an alternative school for the entirety of high school and it is most definitely like this. Fights every few days, kids cussing out and stealing from teachers, kids being on drugs and having drugs on them all the time. It was wild.
@@0ater I went to an alternative one in nyc and it was the opposite. No drugs, no fights except for 1, and little drama. The kids were mixed equally black, spanish, and white

Randy is one of my favourite examples of the tragedy so many kids go through. If he was given the chances other kids got, he would be an enterprising businessman, or anything else he set his mind to. But instead......

Fellow emo guy here. It's crazy cause this school reminds me so much of the middle school I went to same teachers and students, in fact Namond looks like this guy that was in my school same attitude, style, and ponytail he was also kind of a bully to me too lol

It’s really not about that. They were just familiar with her, and she’s obviously been a very firm woman from the jump (so it seems) which in return, they knew not to cross her.
Mr. PRYZ was transitioning from one career to another. As he got used to his transition, he ended up being just as respected.
Being known for being strong and tough as a woman is not a good thing
Its sad man, you could tell that the summer and schools before everything was good. But this last year in middle altered all these kids lives forever. Micheal looks so innocent dapping up namond in the hallway. Randy has this sweet aura, dookie looks shy and naive. And namond still has that bravado that we see chipped away each episode. Fucking brilliant.

Research (Ravitch, Noguera) have shown that charter schools have not improved education, and in many cases worsened the quality for many students. Charter schools have 1 aim PROFIT, give cheap education as much as possible. They cook the books to make themselves look better, look at Michelle Rhee, Atlanta etc.

Remove the ability for power to corrupt, scrape the profit motive and allow schools and classes to set their own curriculum.

Wow kids in urban settings really don’t like listening. Growing up the rural suburbs, you would never see this. Kids are generally quite when they walk in, and they don’t talk back to the teacher. If they do, they go immediately to the principal.

@@KikiW89 it's not that easy honestly. Once they get comfortable walking over the teacher it's over. You gotta establish that kinda "mean" behavior immediately or else you'll usually get taken advantage of. And if it's a predominantly black school then usually the older black teachers get the most respect and if you ain't that then you gotta prepare for the worst.

True story
A friend of mine taught for years in a bad part of LA. This is unfortunately EXACTLY what it is like for teachers in most schools in "ghetto" districts. It's hardest for white teachers in these areas, but all teachers have a difficult time, and unfortunately many stop caring pretty quickly. It's the ones that stay tough and keep pushing their students no matter what that do manage to make a difference-- even if it's just for a few kids.
Damn seeing Baltimore schools takes me back, kinda wish I could go back kinda glad it’s over 😂
