  • We watched the Denzel Washington remake of the Manchurian Candidate and everybody said we HAD to watch the original starring Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury. So we did. Was it better? Was it different? Was it worth it?

You can't even compare one film with the other. The original is a complete masterpiece and the remake is a forgatten good film

If I may say, IF the earlier version seemed to drag, it may be because now everything is quick, quick, instant imaging etc, if that makes sense. Also, I've thought about the mother kissing her son scene (which I actually didn't remember) and I think it fit with her speech about how they chose him to keep her with the program, and remember she said "I'll get back at them for this." and it just showed her obsessiveness with her son. Plus, just to show what a fanatical, wicked cold person she was.
I remember it as a garden club meeting, not a church service. One more thing: about erasing history. What will the end up allowing in the history books?

The pacing with older films is sometimes a struggle for me. Two movies that I like are Stripes and Ghostbusters, but even movies from the early 80s have a slow pace that makes it tough for me.

If you want to know why the mother kissed her son, it's because the movie is actually based on a book, and in the book it's very clear the mother has an incestuous relationship with her son, and at the time with censorship they felt to be true to the book they wanted to hint at the incestuous relationship without actually confirming or showing it. I think it was also not just to be true to the book, but also because those making the movie really wanted to show how creepy the character was. I think they also felt like they wanted to confuse people more since it is a psychological thriller, and a certain amount of confusion can add to the feeling of being off balance. But I will also agree with everyone that it probably would have been better to leave it out if they weren't going to expound on it because it was more distracting than creepy.
I agree about pacing. I originally saw the original back when ALL of TV was slower paced, and it felt perfectly paced to me at the time, but now that I am used to faster paced movies it does feel slower in comparison. The ratio of the pacing feels way better to me in the original, though. They gave the significant moments enough time to breathe and make an impact. But I will agree that while I didn't feel it back in the old days, there is a part of me that probably would prefer the original to pick up the overall pacing while still allowing the key moments to breathe.

@@hollybigelow5337I agree that they probably shouldn't have added the mom kissing then looking at her son in a "he's attractive" manner. If they were gonna add that part, they should've added it sooner and put more detail about the relationship. Just putting that one scene in there throws off the audience! Either add more of that relationship into the movie, or don't show that at all!

The original is my top 10 favorite movie list. The remake not so much. Heck, I read the book to find any trace of Roger Ebert’s weird theory on the movie storyline (there wasn’t).

When the Denzel Washington remake came out, Haliburton and other "contractors" were working with the US Defence Department in Iraq and Afghanistan and they were also heavily involved "advising" the Bush administration - so it was NOT a stretch of the imagination to believe that "Manchurian Global" (Haliburton) might want to influence the US Presidential election...
As someone born after the original was released and who read the book, BOTH are based in US Paranoia about the "Communist Menace". I can never go along with any story that suggests that Joe McCarthy was right....

It's 4 years since this was posted, so probably no one will read this - but FWIW here goes.
In the book (which BTW has some very black humor), there's a backstory for Raymond's mother and stepfather, who are both pretty twisted. The film wanted to show some of that without spending a lot of time on exposition which would slow down the story; so they threw in the "Kiss" scene as a way to show just how weird she is, and by implication how weird Raymond is from being raised by her.
Note - an example of the black humor - Johnny earned a Purple Heart in WWII for a wound suffered in action. He cut his foot when he kicked a naked Eskimo woman in the face.

Haha, that Eskimo thing is hilarious. Sounds like the book had a bit more off beat humor than the film.

The Black character saw the older Black women in his dream. They probably programmed him to see the people who he really saw in real life. The country was very segregated at that time, so his character was seeing who he would have seen every day. The white character, played by Sinatra saw the older white women. And the guy said make like a nice housewife.

6:50 Not exactly they are more catatonic and in shock from the operation (you think you would be Alright after suffering a lobotomy) but definitly brainwashed as you can see they don't put any struggle but since Major Marko and Sergeant Shaw were the ones with actual instructions they were more conditioned, as you can cleary see by them obeying all of Noyle commands. Also in the original version Raymond is not the one they want to insert as the president since he wasn't in politics but his mother's husband, he only become, not a reporter but editor and boss of a political newspaper which had a lot of influence and was targeting her mother and her husband and that was only done as a test to see if after those years he's still fully under their control as they say multiple times in the film.
