  • Welcome to the latest episode of Every Platform and the first one from the Republic of Ireland! Today I am travelling along the not so used line between Waterford and Limerick Junction as well as a few stations on the line to Heuston! Services are seen by Irish Rail (Iarnrod Eireann).
    This was my first ever visit to Ireland and the first of three trips during my stay starts with this one. It was my first time trying out the Hyundai manufactured Class 22000 units which were very nice, plus also seeing many different buses and some beautiful rural countryside made the day even more enjoyable! A great start to a great break in Ireland!

    One of the best lines in the Republic of Ireland is the Cork to Cobh or the Mallow to Tralee

    Also, Fasttrack was Irish Rail's parcel's and letter service. It was also mothballed years ago, And... also... Killarney station is very much like Kilkenny where the train comes in and reverses out to either Tralee or Mallow/Cork/Dublin. Kilkenny station wasn't always a terminus station, it once had a line that went and joined up to Portlaoise on the main Cork/Limerick line.

    Aaah man! Wish I'd known you were over seeing how Irish Rail shouldn't run a railway line haha. Great video! To anyone else watching all the other lines in Ireland are kept better than this Limerick Junction to Waterford route. It should be noted that the line is in fact very well used despite the trains for the two trains in either direction that run on it, despite them being awkward time. The 1040 departure from Limerick Jct has to wait for the train from Cork/Tralee and a train from Dublin to optimise passenger connection options. I often travel this line but the speed limit on the line is horrendous and it really shouldn't take that long to go from Limerick Junction to Waterford. Interesting to note, the service used to be Limerick to Rosslare Europort via Wexford, but this line is currently mothballed and a decision about its future is in the balance. Finally, there was a very serious freight train accident at Cahir which closed the line for a long time when a bridge collapsed, plunging the freight into the river. Irish Rail have a very good safety record, but were slated for poor maintenance of the bridge, in question. I hope you had a good time here.

    12:22 Although I’ve lived in Manchester U.K. 22 years, one of the best aspects of coming home to Ireland to visit family has been the Irish trains and I suspect that one of the reasons for this is because the Irish government did not go down the route of privatisation for Irish Rail, which has been a disaster here in the U.K. - I use SailRail from Manchester via Holyhead - Dublin to come home, but what they are missing is a LUAS line to connect the Irish Ferries and Stena Terminals to Dublin Docklands (for the M3 Parkway line) and to Dublin Connolly - if the M3 Parkway line is extended to Navan this will mean a station to Dunshaughlin so this will be good - and even better if they build a high-speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea between Holyhead and Dublin

    My god the state of Cahir railway stn compared to how I remember it. Used to be a lot of beet traffic on that line during every October. I have a working timetable for that line dating back to the sixties. Did you manage to spot the cannon ball stuck in the wall of the castle,it’s visible from the war memorial.

    My Mum was from Tramore Co Waterford but her family were from Clonmel in Co Tipperary - before she met my Dad in Dublin, she used to work in Castletroy Co Limerick - as a child, I’ve went to Waterford, after meeting the Good Shepherd Nuns at the old school in Manor St in Waterford City for my Granny’s funeral in Ballygunner graveyard and I recall her coffin being carried up the hill on an old horse-drawn cart - on the way back to Dublin we stayed in a B&B in Kilkenny and we stopped off at a service station in Cashel, as Dad had driven us down to Waterford by Car from Dunshaughlin, Co Meath where I grew up

    Great video. Expressway buses are owned by Bus Eireann. Bus Eireann like Irish Rail (Iarnród Eiréann) is a state owned subsidary of Coras Iompar Eiréann the state transport company

    Kilkenny was originally a through station on the line to Port Laoise which was closed with the railway cutbacks in the 1960s

      Interesting. So much has changed and interesting to know that Ireland also had railway cutbacks, I didnt actually know that!

    And to annoy you even more, the set number for the class 22000 are broken down as this. The first two digits obviously state its a class 22000, the next digit will be 2 or 3. '2' is the front and '3' is the rear of the train (despite the fact they are identical) and the last two digits are the series number. So for instance 22259, we would just say over here is "set 59".

    • @KTVTransport
      @KTVTransport  Рік тому

      I did wonder how they were broken down!

    There is a plan to upgrade this line for freight traffic to Roslaire Europort. Hopefully this will remove the excuse for a bad passenger service going forward.
