At the time it was more like a rumor that my science teacher said people in the science community at the time had. She later quit to work at the science center next to the museum in los angeles. She and another teacher always made science fun in their class, even used their own money to take us on real field trips to learn about marine biology, fossils, geography, and astronamy. @@marcdunlop6946 Antarctica does not appear on the Piri Reis largely inaccurate map or on any other ancient map. The Piri Reis map only goes as far south as Punta Medanosa on the Patagonian coast, and other ancient maps allegedly showing Antarctica are actually showing Australia with the south pole in it's center and New Guinea just off it's northern shore. And if that was Antarctica, then Australia is missing, and people would have known about it long before they sailed to Antarctica.

Take a closer look, count the bays, compare latitude to Africa, and actually look at what the coastline of Antarctica looks like, cause maps of that are available, even of images that show it bellow the ice !
