    This is a very good approach for covert decoding. I'm a retired locksmith locksmith and it will come with years of experience that you can look at a most popular key manufacturers in the market and you can come with the bitting by looking at the key...

    Consider attending Lockcon when it resumes. Nice trip to Netherlands. Others have done this before but nice work too.

    Thanks for another great video!
    Just want to share, that I finally tried 3d modelling a key based on a photo and careful measurements of a blank. It works surprisingly well and even holds up to some use even when printed from PLA. After the initial print, confirming it works, I modified the file so I could just enter a new bitting code and the model would auto-magically change. This takes the prep time for a new key based on the same blank from 15-20 minutes to just 1.
    As 3d printers are getting smaller and smaller and printing a key only takes 5-10 minutes, it could prove a viable method for red team engagements presuming a base of operations nearby.

      Thanks Kaur!
      I was considering making a video about 3d printing keys but I didn't have the time to get into that this weekend, maybe sometime soon, I have several 3d files of blanks I made that work when 3d printed, maybe I'll have to bust them out for a video

    The problem you seem to be having is with focusing on the key, not the actual resolution like what you had with the iphone. Setting a tight depth of field would get you a much sharper image.

    Most lenses are not their sharpest at their lowest F stop. If you stepped it up to F/9 or so it would likely give you a bit more usable range.

    • @amihirata
      @amihirata  3 роки тому +1

      That's a bad habit of mine going to the lowest F stop, its a result of only being trained for nighttime surveillance photography.

    The 6D has a full 35mm sensor. I'm curious what difference a crop sensor (for example 100mm on the 6D is equivalent to 160mm on the 60D) makes as well as what the results would be when using a teleconvertor to extend the reach of your lens. The 6D has good sensitivity with low noise. I think you'd be able to get more distance by increasing the ISO and stopping down to f/5.6 to eliminate spherical aberration. I think that would give you a sharp and decodable image at a bit longer distance using the same body and lens.

      Oh absolutely you can get more out of a D6, I'm very much a novice when it comes to photography. My friend Drew, who taught me everything I know about cameras and photography could probably decode a key on the moon if he had the right equipment.

    Very Interesting. I am wondering what would happen if you were able to combine multiple images or use other post processing software to tease out the details.
    If you are able to take one shot then there is a good chance you could take many or even hundreds using burst mode. If you lose 99% of each picture then you simply need to take more pictures and combine them properly. With large telescopes they shoot out a powerful laser beam to correct for distortions. I would not suggest that in these situations. I tells ya, you set a few people on fire with a laser beam and it's all 'Bad Dog' for the next month or so. :(

    • @amihirata
      @amihirata  3 роки тому +2

      Absolutely, post processing would help tons to sharpen and clean up some of the noise in these photos, that said it would also help to have a better operator on the camera for a start, I'm still very much a novice haha

    I have a personal question. I hope you dont mind me asking. How long did it take you to get to the level you are at? I am new as you know and not very good, but the feel and sound of when I open a lock is indescribable. I am bored with master locks, but not sure where to go from here. You and lockpickinglawyer are the only 2 I am familiar with. I will say this, the lock picking community has been so kind to me, especially you.

    • @amihirata
      @amihirata  3 роки тому +4

      David,
      I've been picking locks for the better part of 10 years. I progressed very quickly by using a progressively pinned practice lock which I maintain is the best way for people to learn and get good at picking locks.
      From there I would try the American 1100 and Masterlock 410, both are great practice locks and I have a bunch of KiK cylinders that I used (of both brands) that I use to practice picking.
      Thanks,

    could one get better output from reconstructing it from a set of pictures taken? or use those fancy upscaling algorithms people have talked about

    • @Biped
      @Biped 3 роки тому

      Upscaling I'm pretty sure is not possible. You can't generate correct information where there is none. Layering multiple photos however I'm not too certain. Might be an option

    • @MrGillb
      @MrGillb 3 роки тому +1

      @@Biped no literally upscaling algorithms are a thing that exists; accuracy is indeed questionable (as these are done for upscaling low quality textures) but maybe in some situations it may pay off to have enough of a key rather than no key. besides layering the photos, upscaling and checking between models + photos may have some payoff too

    • @MrGillb
      @MrGillb 3 роки тому

      @@Biped I never claimed that upscaling generates correct information. It generates correct looking information; its been quite literally used for upscaling video game textures in mods. I'm saying it may yield just a enough clean render to give a set of photos some usable information where as it was previously absolutely unusable.

    That was only a 200mm lens (based on your 70-200mm was this a zoom lens?)
    More powerful lenses aren't particularly expensive, and non zoom lenses are usually better quality. My wife has a 300mm lens for her canon. Yes you would want to use a mount, but a mount inside a vehicle would probably not excite too much attention.
    The RF 800mm lens costs $899.99 and is compatible with the RF 2x ($599.99) extender giving you effectively a 1600mm lens for $1,499.98 (list price). Admittedly you would have to switch to an EOS R body to use these lenses, the EF equivalents are more expensive.

    • @amihirata
      @amihirata  3 роки тому

      Yeah, absolutely. A super zoom in the proper hands would make mincemeat of this task at 100 yards let alone 100ft
