How Close is Detroit to Canada?

  • Опубліковано 31 лип 2020
  • Most Americans have no idea that Detroit's southern boundary is the Canadian border. Downtown Detroit USA and Downtown Windsor CANADA stand face-to-face along opposite sides of the 2000-ft-wide Detroit River with the international border running right down the middle. The two cities share a lot of history. Especially as the region is a global auto industry hub that sprawls deep into both Michigan and Ontario.
Canada is the United States' largest trading partner. 25% of all physical trade between the two nations is exchanged at Detroit's border crossings. These include a rail tunnel and a motor vehicle tunnel. Both of which carry traffic under the Detroit River. The Ambassador Bridge carries all of the heavy commercial traffic (10,000 big rigs every day) over the river. And the Blue Water Bridge in nearby Port Huron, Michigan links that city to Sarnia, Ontario Canada on the other side of the St. Clair River.
A new, state of the art bridge, "The Gordie Howe", is under construction now. Once completed in 2024 it will provide a new link between Detroit and Windsor. Most existing truck traffic will shift to the new bridge as it will have world-class customs and inspection facilities on both sides of the river and direct freeway access to Canada's E.C. Row Expressway and Detroit's I-75, I-94 and I-96 freeways.

I live in Windsor and works atMetro Detroit commuting daily (now WFH due to covid). If you want a relaxing life (quiet, parks, nature, the high standard of affordable living) Windsor is for you. If you want night life, parties, chaotic life, sporting events, shopping, etc. then Michigan is the place. I got the best of both worlds. Lucky me.

Agreed. Maybe not to the size and scope of NYC. But this asset (the Detroit/Windsor link) is terribly underappreciated by Americans and Canadians who live more than a few hours from this location. Construction of a new vehicular bridge has been gaining steam the last few years. The "Gordie Howe International Bridge" is currently going up about about 4 miles SW of Downtown Detroit and about a mile SW of the existing Ambassador Bridge (built in 1929). The new, $5 billion bridge will have direct access to freeways on both sides of the river. And massive, state-of-the-art customs facilities with world-class security features on both sides.

I'm from Ontario/Canada, visited the Renaissance Center on the Detroit side around Thxgiving for a few years to meet up with friends/family. The "Ren Cen" is nice, GM World Headquarters plus GM showrooms, hotels (like Marriott), malls, banquet halls and conference centers all rolled into those 3-4 imposing skyscrapers. I remember our rooms in the Marriott (high up 50th or 60th floor) had the exact panoramic view of the river and Canadian side as shown in this video. There's a nice "people mover" monorail you can take from the RenCen as well, for a quick tour of Detroit downtown, costed $1 to ride as I recall - For all of Detroit's bad rap as unsafe, I found that train far cleaner/safer than (say) NY subway.. albeit it's not an apples-to-apples comparison (more like apple-to-BigApple, HaHa). Loved eating out in Motown, plus shopping in the Detroit/Dearborn area, and the cheap gas helped too! Yeah, I like Detroit, and hope we can visit again after Covid.

Yes the United States is more developed than Canada. The United States has ten times the population of Canada so land use/development is naturally going to be far more dense. I do not know about the US system, but there are a lot of regulatory and political hurdles to land development in Canada (zoning by-laws, provincial policy, conservation authorities, archaeological assessments, species at risk, etc.)

You have to stop at Customs/Border Services just beyond the border, produce a passport and driver's license. Then submit to a few screening questions (where are you going? how long will you be there? what is the purpose of your trip? do you have any valuables, perishables, firearms or drugs?). At that point you're typically ready to continue on but the authorities have the right to detain you for more screening and inspections. My advice is to respect the process and to take what these officers do seriously.

There was a time when pedestrians were allowed to walk across the Ambassador Bridge. Not sure when that ended. There's no walking through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. The entirety of Michigan's 750-mile-long border with Canada is water. There are only two other bridges (Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron and the International Bridge in Sault St Marie). Neither of those allow walkers. All that said there is a new span under construction now. The Gordie Howe Bridge will add a link between Detroit and Windsor when completed in 2024. That span has incorporated into its design six lanes for motor vehicles and lanes dedicated to pedestrians & bicycles. Should be pretty cool!

Once they settled in Michigan my Canadian grandfather became a bus driver for Detroit's DSR (which became DDOT). He finished on the Downtown Trolleys. Retired in 1984. We still have loads of family on the Windsor side. Cannot wait until personal travel over the border is allowed once again. A new, $4 billion bridge (The Gordie Howe International Crossing) is under construction now. It should be complete in 2024. That's about 2 miles southwest of Downtown Detroit. 25% of all physical trade between the US and Canada crosses the border at Detroit/Windsor. Huge part of the regional economy.
