    I carried one of these (22 mag) for last ditch use in my 30+ years as a law enforcement officer. They work great! After retirement, I still use it as a "get off me gun" as a back-up to my CCW.

    I inherited one of these from my father, complete with sneaky wallet holster, which is classified by the ATF as an Any Other Weapon. Get the paper work or leave the holster at home. My favorite part is how loud the gun is. It sounds much bigger than its actual size. Great video.

      MUCH better than coffee! But I did drink mine while watching.
      I was just thinking about how the .45 Colt could be treated in all the ways you have covered the .44 special. Guess there was never a .45 Russian, just ACP. :-)
      Also guess the .44 mag never had to worry about the older guns.

      E.Kent.D - Actually, we have the 45 Schofield brass that is shorter than the 45 Colt brass - kinda like a 45 Special...I might get some of that brass to try...thanks for the idea... Best Regards and Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to ya..!! FC

    I am forgetting the "new" brand of the DM 101 22Mag, but I HAVE seen it out there.
    I have one, and saw a video go past me of the same darned piece that SOME company replicated.
    So, they ARE still being made...sort of.

  • @5roundsrapid263

    Fascinating. One round of .22 WMR would be bad enough. Two would definitely incapacitate a threat.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 років тому +2

      5Rounds Rapid - The action of the HS Derringer is as fast as the double rifles of Africa...And 22WMR Hollow Points are nastiness. No matter whatever is carried, this derringer in an ankle holster(s) would be mighty comforting. And those rigs could be worn around the house or to bed if necessary. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to ya...! FC

    dry firing rim fire damages gun parts. this gun came out in 1962 in 22LR and added mag 10 years later then disc 10 years after that

    Put the grips on to get a decent standard grip. The index finger along barrel may result in a burn.
    The aluminum lower always shows nicks and wear.
    It's a big barker!

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 років тому

      XavierKatzone - It's automatic Xavier, 1) if someone had fingers long enough to get burned, he or she would not be doing that as prudence dictates that fingertips getting shot off would also be on the doorstep. 2) the grip is paramount in a situation of dire need - and shooting the gun tells the owner if more is needed in a trade off for handiness and concealability. 3) This is a last ditch weapon. There's no sporting use here. You are an intelligent person, Xavier - I'll let you and any other reader furnish their own conclusions to this discussion. Best to ya, FC Steve (and I sincerely mean that)

    Interesting little 2 shooter. Don't have that one but I do have a NAA mini revolver in 22mag. that I put a grip that the gun folds into like a pocket knife. Its my handy dandy little back up.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 років тому

      glockerbob - That is some last ditch defense in a small package - and stainless steel as well...may we never have to use these things in earnest... Best to ya for a Happy Holiday season... FC

    You can shoot this gun with gloves on. It was made for police types who work in severe Winters. If your hands have even gone suddenly into first stage frostbite, you experience severe sudden pain and the best you can do rapidly is stuff your hands in under your armpits. Not a good self defense situation.
    This gun is highly prized. It shoots poorly if you shoot it like a regular weapon with your trigger finger. Probably why sales fell short. You fire it point shooting with your second finger, your trigger finger tucked just under the barrel , not alongside where the tip of your finger can get burned. Skeeter Shelton recommended this gun and he had two, one in .22 LR and the other in .22 Magnum. Most of the reviews I have seen on the handgun foul it up in one way or another, the gun is a bit outside normal parameters...

    You must have smaller hands than I. When I grip mine, my index finger will wrap around the muzzle. I have both models, the LR and the Mag. I had the wallet holster but had to sell it because the gun with the wallet is considered an AOW these days. I have the range session recorded, but have yet to do the bench review. Retired life is too busy!
    For trivia sake, a .38 Spl clone of this design was built by BTJ and I think later by American Derringer. It actually had a thumb safety! Anyhow, this company had the same exact address as High Standard. I believe that when High Standard went out of business, they either had this on the books or were prototyping, but I do not believe High Standard ever made any.

      RyeOnHam - Wow - you must have huge mitts because I take a large glove. Thanks for the additional information. Congrats on your retirement. I'm still a couple or three away...also congrats on owning both LR and 22 WMR HS Derringers...I want to see that video when you get it up..!! No other video on YT has both of these rascals...plus the holsters yet if any you still have. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to ya...! FC

      FortuneCookie45LC The holster is long gone. Owning the holster AND the gun at the same time is a Federal Felony! I will have to move that video up on the schedule, now, because you've got me interested.

    Can you make a video on how to disassembly High Standard Derringer ? There is nothing further and deep explanations for this pistol. Also I can't figure out its double action mechanism and its rachet‘s function. Thanks in advance!

    • @joepoelmans5910
      @joepoelmans5910 5 років тому

      Yeah theres very few vids where people dissassemble them on youtube but there are some but you had better hope to be a visual learner as I havent seen anything about the ratcheting system so next step was to look up how to make ratchet systems, and trigger&hammer mechanisms plus what type of metal and alloys and such will be needed. Assuming you're trying to fix one or make one thats about the best I could think of

    Wonderful story, nice firearm. I have some 22mag shells made by Gold Dot. Supposedly they are designed for those snubby pistols so you get a greater velocity with less barrel. Never shot any though I don't have a snubby 22 mag. But if you do carry that it may be an advantage to carry the pistol ammo over rifle ammo.

      Jake Outdoors - Problem in CA is that CCW is difficult to come by. However, another viewer is in the process of getting CCW in CA, so I guess it is possible to get one. Unless a citizen has the permit to carry, breaking the law is not good policy...Best to ya, FC

    • @jakeoutdoors9600
      @jakeoutdoors9600 8 років тому

      FortuneCookie45LC I was unaware of the difficulty to acquire a CCW in CA. In Pa where I a live we are a "shall issue" state. Basically if you are not a felon and you apply for a CCW they must issue you the permit. Hopefully that equality comes your way soon.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 років тому

      Jake Outdoors - Thanks - but there were a whole slew of even more strict gun control bills announced just before the November election (do you think that encouraged gun rights voters to go to the polls in other states? And of course they would vote silently...) Chances of CA loosening up on CCW is nil to forlorn... Best to ya, and Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to ya..!! FC

    Unfortunately, the power of the 22 magnum round is wasted in this derringer in muzzle blast and flash. The round really shines when fired in a rifle like the Henry lever action.
