I remember showing at wihs and tho it doesn’t look it - the ring is so skinny and the jumps come up fast!-impressive riding and gotta give my shoutout to Caitlin Boyle! 💜 amazing rider and awesome person! Miss you Caitlin!
I don't understand why none of these riders are ever told to get their elbows in. They all brace their hands down with their elbows popped way out and away from their bodies. This causes a lot of their issues with getting pulled out of the saddle on the landing too.
Most of them actually have their elbows in, but it is kind of hard to keep your elbows in while jumping those big jumps and maintaining a perfect frame.
Most of them are using a crest release rather than an automatic release. Unfortunately, the crest release is preferred in the hunter/equitation ring. If they did an automatic release, their elbows would not stick out as much.
+Chevron704 A crest release over a jump is when a rider brings their hands together and almost pushes on the horses crest or neck thus pushing their elbows out. An automatic release a rider holds their hands out more to the sides of the neck and follows with the horses motion
I think I may like Hunter Jumping a bit more than Show Jumping, just because it seems more controlled, not exactly relaxed... but collected and smooth. Show Jumping is just fast, crazy, a lot of the riders have terrible form, and pretty much all over the place XD!! Hunter Jumping seems like it would take a lot more patience and skill than show jumping :)!
Horses, Animals and Everything it can be. but hunters is realistically very stiff and it's easy to mess it all up. but in jumpers all you have to worry about is keeping the jumps up and the time.
Horses, Animals and Everything actually no, there are a lot of jumpers who aren’t all over the place. You may say that because you see more of the European jumpers, in the US and Canada we have hunter and Eq trainers who teach both hunters and jumpers. Hence American and Canadian jumpers tend to not be so all over the place. Also the jumpers are very technical, in order to not knock any fences you have to get good distances and correct striding between jumps. Not only do you have to do that but in a fast canter or gallop.
I have a quick question. I show at c rated shows in alaska and we never use running martingales in equitation classes so I was wondering the reasoning and/or explanation as to why it is used here.
As cool as I think this is, how do they fit the saddles? I doubt all of the riders are the same size, and it would certainly be wiser to fit to the horse.
You can certainly see how they jump differently from the british, its kind of like the british go faster and higher while in america they go slower and lower if that makes sense! Beautiful horses though and very smart riders!
There is a discipline in america called jumpers or showjumping that they are judged on speed and keeping the rails up. This is equitation, where the most effective rider with a proper position wins!
In America we do something called equitation and hunters, for these classes we don't go as high and as fast but we also do jumpers/show jumping which is higher and faster. These are not the same classes they are two very different ones.
+Emma Potter yes I see them floating and bouncing away from the jumps. Also a lot of balancing off the stirrup. If some of these girls road a less than 6 figure horse I think they would struggle.
Well actually, in jumpers nobody does half seat on course, only over jumps. In EQ, riders keep a more upward seat, but they still like collection, slow riding, and traditional attire/tack. Hunters is full on frills and half seat. (In eq they allow leather EQ boots and hind, where in hunters they don't allow neither and will be disqualified for having them on a horse and entering the ring) just an FYI :)
Pinching with your knees will swing your leg back. They DON’T want that in equitation. Your leg should be nice and still. Plus depending on how your pinching with your legs, it just sounds painful. 😬 (I’m expanding on what Dawn Dish Soap already said)
Did they make everyone switch horses with a completely random rider? That seems strange having to ride a horse you've never ridden before... correct me if I am wrong please
TheHorseLady1212 i think that there’s some kind of exception when you get to the upper levels, you can also use some kind of open front boots too i tho k
The WIHS has two parts, a hunter phase and a jumper phase. In the hunt seat phase, they have to wear standard nosebands and standing martingales like any medal class but in the jumper seat phase they can use jumper tack like figure 8 nosebands and running martingales. Since this work off is over the jumper phase course, the horses are all in that tack.
the Pelham gives more leverage on the bit when the reins are pulled so the horse goes into a frame easier (from what I've been told). It also could just be since a Pelham rein is considered stronger, the rider doesn't have to make a big scene on slowing the horse down because one touch with the bit changes the horses gait to something slower
Hussain Makki a lot of people can at 13. Although I have a question. What do you show in? Because from my knowledge there is 12-14 Eq which is 2’6 and 15-17 Eq which is 3’3 I believe. So if you are 13 I assuming that you can’t show 3’3 which is what there doing here.
Belle Devault not true. A lot of horses are very much one-person horses. They have created a bond with there rider and they prefer for only there rider to ride them. For example my friends pony. When she rides him he’s very calm and collected, and she only has to use her aids very slightly, but I hopped on him the other day and he ran of with me and wouldn’t stop. It was a matter of me not being his rider. Horses are very sensitive and some don’t like new people riding them, it’s more of a personality thing then a training thing.
Daw N Nope. It’s a training thing... The vast majority of horses see being ridden as work. It’s a matter of who rides the horse better... Sure you can get along with one horse, more than others, but at the end of the day, it’s training. You can teach a horse to be ridden by anyone, simply by putting a new rider on said horse every once in a while. He’ll get used to it.
Megan Proffitt I disagree, I think that different horses have different tolerance levels. Typically lesson horses for example have a very high tolerance levels, this is something that I normally see as a personality thing. Then my horse for example, she tolerates other people ridding her, but doesn’t like it and typically gives other people a hard time. There’s are also horses like my friends pony, he’s naturally a fairly nervous horse and sees my friend as almost a safety blanket, when other people ride him he gets nervous and runs off and is bad, therefore he doesn’t tolerate new people. I think IS a personality thing rather than a training thing, but your allowed your opinion which in fine. I just don’t agree with your opinion personally.
Phelhams make it easier for the rider to frame the horse, along with collect and balance it without having to make big moves with their hand, since it’s an eq class having quiet hands is very important
i could never let a stranger ride my horse. i let one of my friends (that i know is a good rider) ride him ONE time and i told her he needs a loose rein and little leg. she pulled on him one time. i made her get off and then i screamed at her. my little baby’s so good i don’t want him getting the wrong impression from a different rider.
From what I know as an equitation and hunter rider they are not the same. To simplify it the main difference is the way they are judged. Equitation is judged on the riders position, and the way the rider handles the horse. Hunters is judged on the horses ability to perform, along with smoothness and consistency. That is just my understanding of it, and I hope this makes sense.
That first horse has such smooth impulsion it's amazing!
the first pair did so good that they made such an advanced ride look easy. so impressive
Was it just me or did those rides look super smooth and calm. I wish I could ride as smooth as that.
N!KK! U probably could if you rode one of these super fancy horses.
gael crane you don’t need a super fancy horse to ride well.
Daw N she said she “wished she could ride as smooth” as the person not as well.
gael crane still
Daw N sorry but still what?
The first one such a good rider, such a good horse🤗
the dude giving the horse butt scritches at 24:02 is everything to me

17:17 beautiful. That horse and rider did so good!!! -Isabel
The horse at 15:23 had a really smooth gait and gait transition. What a beauty too.
the horses are so beautiful and jump so gracefully
Sadly I couldn't jump as high or as flawless as this on my own horse let alone someone else's :(
i love Caitlin Boyle's horse it is GORGEOUS!!!!!
i was completely mesmerized by the first horse and rider
This is part of why I never went to compete at certain horse shows. I don’t like anyone riding my horse but me or someone I trust.
The first horse was a BEAUTIFUL bay
that first horse!!!! omg stunning

Very true!
I feel the same way! Great way to describe it
That's because Jumpers is solely judged on getting over the jump and doing it fast hunters is based on tradition, slow, braided, looks nice.
Horses, Animals and Everything actually no, there are a lot of jumpers who aren’t all over the place. Im starting to learn basic basics of riding from someone who rides in this style. Im happy im starting from this foundation.
Can we just talk about how huge that first horse had to be
Why wasn't Hunter Holloway shown?
Some people don't want to go on UA-cam.
Coo Coo Da Comedian Hunter Halloway is all over UA-cam
He didn’t qualify for this round the horses swapped where drawn at random before the finale 3 rounds started
Moonshine Snowfall hunter hollaway is a girl
I have a quick question. I show at c rated shows in alaska and we never use running martingales in equitation classes so I was wondering the reasoning and/or explanation as to why it is used here.
Only running martingales are permitted in the jumping phase of these kinds of classes, I believe. I'm not too sure though.
ohhh i see none of us use them in the eq or hunter rings up here.
Running martingales can be used in the WIHS Medal
+madi horwatt its a really really goo thing to use while you jump bc it won't choke the horse like a standing one will
madi horwatt running martingales are allowed for the jumping phases only
Was it just me or were the arena and the jumps small?!?
And they ride so smooth
As cool as I think this is, how do they fit the saddles? I doubt all of the riders are the same size, and it would certainly be wiser to fit to the horse.
most saddles are all bespoke and made to fit the horse and rider as a pair :)
Being a hunter over fences rider I have been asked to swap horses, It was fun.
Some of these have alot of air between their heel and their horses barrel...
The equestrian Freak they all switched horses
You can certainly see how they jump differently from the british, its kind of like the british go faster and higher while in america they go slower and lower if that makes sense! Beautiful horses though and very smart riders!
I agree
There is a discipline in america called jumpers or showjumping that they are judged on speed and keeping the rails up. This is equitation, where the most effective rider with a proper position wins!
This is hunt seat its based on form and correctness, while show jumpers are based on speed
This is not hunt seat. This is equitation.
In America we do something called equitation and hunters, for these classes we don't go as high and as fast but we also do jumpers/show jumping which is higher and faster. These are not the same classes they are two very different ones.
Is it just me or are they rising the canter? Have I just never noticed people doing this before? Is this normal and I'm just going crazy?
In hunter/jumper it is normal for a rider to "half seat" while they go around in a hunter under saddle or jumping class!
+Emma Potter yes I see them floating and bouncing away from the jumps. Also a lot of balancing off the stirrup. If some of these girls road a less than 6 figure horse I think they would struggle.
I think it's called half seat or light seat
Well actually, in jumpers nobody does half seat on course, only over jumps. In EQ, riders keep a more upward seat, but they still like collection, slow riding, and traditional attire/tack. Hunters is full on frills and half seat. (In eq they allow leather EQ boots and hind, where in hunters they don't allow neither and will be disqualified for having them on a horse and entering the ring) just an FYI :)
hallhv01 Nope, not balancing on the stirrups at all actually! Also most high level hunters wouldn’t struggle riding a green horse. Know your facts :)
How high were they jumping?!
Cutiecorn island 3’3”
WIHS Equitation is 3'6"
What breed is the first horse. So Beautiful!
Probably a wormblood most of them are for eq and hunters
Or an Irish sports horse?
When youre just at practice can you wear a raplh laruen polo? Or would you look stupid and you need like a horseback riding polo?
You should probably ask your trainer.
Equine X if you're just practicing ralph lauren polos are fine.
The 3rd girls legs were really wonky and had a lot of spacing between her saddle and her legs.
The Hendersons your leg shouldn’t be touching the whole saddle, it’s not good to pinch with your knees or calf.
Pinching with your knees will swing your leg back. They DON’T want that in equitation. Your leg should be nice and still. Plus depending on how your pinching with your legs, it just sounds painful. 😬 (I’m expanding on what Dawn Dish Soap already said)

This is an equitation class aren't people supposed to have their heels down lol.
Uh they do...

Noodlesauxe Yes. It’s to test the riders adjustability and adaptability to a strange horse.
Riders at this level can typically handle most horses thrown at them.
I thought that figure 8 nosebands and running martingales were not allowed in hunters/equitation?
TheHorseLady1212 i think that there’s some kind of exception when you get to the upper levels, you can also use some kind of open front boots too i tho k
