Film Camera Review: The Belomo Agat 18k

- This is an old Soviet half frame camera from the early 80's. The Agat 18k was made by Belomo. I love half frame cameras as well as toy cameras. It's hard for me to call the Agat 18k a toy because the internal workings is made like a clock. This is my go-to camera for everything. It's very small and pocketable and weighs as much as my Blackberry Storm 2.
I'm very active in the Agat 18k flickr group. I check flickr everyday for posts, so if you have any questions ask away there:
www.flickr.com/...
I also wrote up an easy to follow take apart guide as well:
flic.kr/s/aHsjw...
Also a shout-out to the Film Photography Podcast for inspiring fellow photographers to pickup a roll of film and enjoy shooting:

I finally shot the whole roll, even though I forgot to focus sometime, used the wrong point at first to set my aperture, it takes surprisingly good sharp pictures.
These little things are a ton of fun, and great to tote around when you don't want to bring much, or bring anything you'd be bummed to loose - aka a rafting trip. :)
great! we need more film camera videos on utube. keep up the good work! ty!
Мой первый фотоаппарат.в студии в 94 году учился на нем фотографировать,когда был маленьким)
Hello George! the serial number it's infact the year it was made, Russia and the soviet union used that system. the number it starts with its the year it was made. :)
To test it:
Open the camera.
There's a tiny pin button you can push in. Push and hold it.
While holding that button, turn the sprocket until you hear the shutter cock.
When the shutter cocks press the shutter button.
It says Vileyka (Town in Belarus) Factory "Zenit" and serial number.
Love the review ! Thanks !
Very informative. Thank you.
I would guess БелОМО stands from Belarus Optical and Mechanical Association similar to ЛОМО being Leningrad Optical and Mechanical Association
i own one of these ,i found it at my grandpa s house. But how do i know if it still works ? should i just try it right ?
will do!
hey, great video! I have a problem with the rewind thingy in mine. I am able to take picrtues and advance film just fine, but it is in the red dot, I read it's supposed to be on the white one. I am not able to move the circle to the white dot and also I am not able to rewind the film. any idea what should I do? Thank you!
Ah, finally it appeared that my Agat has got broken, that's why I had troubles with it.
Will have to buy another one, heh.
Nice review, I got a few questions that you might be capable of answering.
Is possible of using the camera in a bulb mode?
How often do you get bad results, because the parameters to control seem pretty narrow?
Can you trick the camera somehow to do a double exposure?
Thanks in advance
Hi!
I realize this video is old but I just stumbled upon it and was wondering if you still have one for sale
I'll take that as a compliment.
Hi. Does anyone know where I can get the manual for this in English? I have looked online and only found a dead link. Thanks.
Thanks a lot man, it would be really great! :)
just recorded the video yesterday! I'm also giving away an agat 18k. I'll edit and upload the video tonight
Hi man, thx a lot for the video.
I was wondering if You'd be so kind and make another one, with some explanation how to load the AGAT camera with film.
Greetz,
Yerz
Hi
Apparently mine Agat has damaged reset counter. This little pin near sprocket gear which supposed to reset the counter doesnt work because it is loose, it doesnt spring back. Am I able to repair it?
What does the little red and white dots mean on the top where you wind. mine is in red
Do you still have it ? I'll know it's been 7 year or 8..
Kinda looking for 35mm film camera and found out half frame.. so. Can you give me recommend camera.
how do you take apart the view finder mine has stuff in it and I want to clean it out, thanks for your time.
What filter size is on the lens ? do you know if its the same size as a trip 35?
Great review, thanks ;-)
Hi,
ah well - I don't know. The wheel for film-transportation doesn't rotate. So it destroys film's perforation. :(
Will check out the profile, thanks!
Is that Agat still for sale?
it would really help me too !:)
just a question Agat users. can you check 3:31 on this video? i can see an almost "1/4 pie" cut in the lens. i have the same thing on the Agat18k that i received today from ebay. is this normal? do you have the same on your lens and will it not affect the final image?
that's just an aperture blade
thanks George! i almost got disappointed with the seller :) another question..with this not having shutter speed control, would that mean that Sunny16 rule cannot be applied on this? as when i align f8, the equivalent is almost sunny on the top guide. and if i select cloudy, it's pointing at f5.6 (which by rule is cloudy=f8). any comment on this? i know it's already given on the guide of the camera itself...but just curious. thanks
Shutter speed remains the same, only thing you change is the iso.
George Moore ...iso?
You're changing pairs of shutter speed and exposure, as far as I remember. They're "hard-coupled".
ok so i think i found this really tiny pin and I turn the sprocket (the big big one or the tiny right under the pin ?) but i didnt hear the cock
самый простой фото аппарат, был у меня такой
У меня и сейчас он живой лежит, выкинуть жалко...
check out my video on the camera giveaway contest. I show you how to load and rewind the Belomo Agat 18k. I'm also giving away this camera to a lucky subscriber
Был у меня такой в детстве, году в 1984-85
Честно сказать отвратительный аппарат, старая Смена и то лучше снимала.
Не понимаю восхищения.
I hope I win
What's wrong with it? Have you checked out my flickr tutorial on agat 18k repairs? my flickr username is djgeorgie
okay i think i did it but only once :D
