2024: How and why does solar air conditioning now make sense? What finally makes it work now?

  • shop.airspool.... What is a solar hybrid air conditioner, anyway? How does it work? Why 2 things make it possible now? A solar hybrid air conditioner is an inverter dc air conditioner/solar air conditioner that can run off of a combination of alternating current from the grid and direct current. The direct current is always prioritized, since generated by the solar panels, and thus is free. It works by plugging around 1,500 watts of solar panels directly into the outside unit of the air conditioner without voltage regulators, batteries, or inverting the solar power. The motors are DC-powered. And, the unit has complex electronics that blend solar and grid power. All of this is possible since i) solar panels have come down in price 85% from 10 years ago ii) the electronics required for the #VRF #variablerefrigerantflow technology in the air conditioner are now possible at an affordable price. #solarac #offgrid #hybrid #minisplit #solarairconditioner #diy #solar #mrcool #solarheatpump #offgridhvac

    This would be great for central America! People need AC but the electricity is so expensive. What a cool product

      Yes, it's perfect for off grid. You can imagine in New Delhi, for instance, yesterday when it's 126°, and power is sketchy, this is a good solution there, too.

    Hi Dave, happy that I found your channel and your videos.
    I've been doing a few of these videos myself. We should collaborate and have these reaching a broader audience.

    How is this 12,000 BTU as it is advertised? If it is 12,000 BTU per hour then that is by definition a rate of energy (power) of around 3500 watts = 1 ton = 12,000 BTU/hr.

    I want one. I just checked my monthly elex bill here in my 1200 sq ft single story 1960 insulated house in Sacramento and for four hot months the bill soars to 150 avg, else its 55 avg the other 8 months. so if I get the ez kit and source 2000 watts of used panels from those places where you gotta order online and then drive 20 miles to a distribution point on the delivery/pickup date I could probably roi in what 6 years. AAANNDDD, run my house temps more comfortabler…. cuz to keep the $$$ lower I do quite a few 80° days indoors

      Yes, in Sacramento, the savings are huge, because PG&E just keeps on gouging and the panel price keeps on coming lower. Check locally at Greentech Tenewable Sacramento. They have some panels and a lot of places under $0.35/watt, we're finding. And you only need 1500 watts. No need to do 2000. So for around 5 or $600 in panels, you'll be able to run for the next 25 years for free during the day there. Beats paying 35 cents a kilowatt-hour.

      I’m in SMUD but, you’re right peak hours 5-8PM the rate is .35

    A/C company did a crappy job capping off duct work 😮‍💨

    • @airspool
      @airspool  2 місяці тому

      Yes. Well, we're just feeding into the ductwork as an access point to downstairs. These units are all ductless, so just need to run the line set through the old duct.

    Hey there Dave!! .... I bought one of these and hope to buy MORE. Quick question.... I have connected this to 4 panels of 455 watts each in series. If, because of the heat, they are expected to loose about 20% of its work which means they are about 364 watts each..... This means that I'm giving the AC System about 1456 watts DC. Shouldn't that be enough to drive it at 100% using zero grid power? Why does it tell me in the app that it's using anywhere from 18 to 29 watts at full sunshine? ..... There are ZERO clouds during this time. .... Thoughts??

      @airspool  Рік тому

      That's a great question. Yes, it's sort of a phantom thing we are working to solve. But yes, of course you can totally unplug the unit and it will run off of all solar with your current wattage. You'll notice, statistically speaking, that that 19 watts doesn't always show up. We'll get there!

      @@airspool Ok good..... Great to know that you know about this and are working on the phantom wattage. 🙂

      @@airspool I gotta tell you Dave, these "Phantom Watts" are grinding on my nerves. This is using anywhere from 19 to 24 watts in FULL sun with 4 / 455 watt solar panels in series. There should be ZERO "Phantom Watts". Sure, I can unplug it but now my AC turns off when I have an unseen cloud cover. Why can EG4 not have these issues when, I'm sure, the inverter / boards are from the same company in China. I can be wrong about that, but that's my perception. Please tell me what's being done and what is the fix for these unnecessary "Phantom Watts"? This has to be a fix SOON.

      OK Dave .... UPDATE..... After 7 months of using this Airspool, the "Phantom Watts" are now at zero. I'm running my Airspool Mini Split at FULL blast mode with using ZERO grid watts. I now am running 2 Airspools and I just now bought another one and will install it very soon before the heat gets here in Arizona. These things are AMAZING!!!! It can be 118 degrees outdoors and in my master bedroom it's like a meat locker it's SOOOO Cold! Of course it doesn't NEED to be that cold and you can turn it down EAISLY. In my total build, I plan to have 5 of these and with a battery system large enough to run them all during the night and all batteries recharging during the day back to 100% ALL while the Airspools are running at 100%!

      Check the grounding. Try to remove the grounding and then add the grounding. You may find that the power leak stops when NOT grounded. In which case, maybe the unit needs a board to be replaced or repaired. Similar to what happens with DC ceiling fans; a ghost very dim light even when off.

    I am looking to buy one of these units. Are the lines precharged by chance?? I am not a professional electrician or AC person, but want to install this myself if possible.
