- I knew we were in trouble when the back windshield of our car exploded; glass shards flew into the back of my head and my lap; my first thought was that we had been shot. My cameraman and I had been filming homelessness on the streets of San Francisco for a Telegraph documentary when we came under attack.
San Francisco is perhaps America’s most liberal city; it has been at the vanguard of radical, progressive politics for decades. Now the city is at the forefront in the push for “reparations”, cash payments for its black citizens to right the historic wrong of slavery, its proponents pushing for $5 million per person.
With the city facing an unprecedented rise in homelessness, drug overdoses and crime, in a new documentary for The Telegraph, I wanted to find out why local officials were so keen on handing over millions of dollars they can barely afford, in a state that never even had slavery, and whether America’s obsession with race will heal the wounds of time, or push an already divided population to the brink.

Should I be asking for reparations from the Black people who violently attacked our family and our community members and killed some too. This social and economic decline is not limited to San Francisco, it's in every American city. To make matters worse, more people are pouring across the Southern border from all over the world. Robbed by smugglers they arrive with nothing and are sleeping on the streets. Authorities in New York estimate that the city has had 90,000 within a year. They line the streets there in cardboard boxes.

@@gislump7984 Like most big cities, there are good and bad neighborhoods. SF has more bad neighborhoods than ever ( I grew up in the Bay Area). Keep your cell phone close, leave nothing to steal in your car, and visit places like Hayes Valley, the Palace of the Legion of Honor, Ocean Beach, Chestnut Street, Golden Gate Park, etc. Much of SF is lovely!

Yes, there is more crime, most likely due to the to soft on crime policies, but 99% of the city is beautiful and completely safe. I mean SF is one of the wealthiest cities in the US, most expensive home prices, most educated, etc....

Their education is limited by the public school system where they are never taught of the millions of white Europeans enslaved by the Barbary pirates or the fate of male black African slaves by the hands of the Arab slavers (castration). Even the popular film Roots was ahistorical as European slave traders (with the exception of the Portuguese for a short period) never raided deep into Africa for slaves. Tropical diseases rendered the life expectancy of a European about 1 year in the interior of Africa.

My family and I just came back from the US. In previous years, SF would be the first place we would look around and visit, this time all we did was land at SF International airport and drove the hell out to another destination.
I lived in wonderful San Francisco for 33 years and it was a really good experience for me. My spouse and I retired and moved back to the south to care for our aging parents eight years ago.
What I am seeing on the news is unrecognizable, horrifying, and the result of bad public policy decisions and the lack of good leadership in government.
I’ve been here for 32 years. It’s bad and getting worse so sad to see. The quality of life has suffered greatly.

If people who support reparations truly meant what they say, then they would be asking for reparations for every group that has been wronged in history - not just black Americans. I think it's very telling that they don't seem very interested in reparations for others.

It's crazy that she claims the descendants of immigrants have places to go back to, but the descendants of slaves don't. The very people asking for reparations have also benefited from the enslavements of their ancestors as much as everyone else in the country, but being born into a developed country with resources and a strong economy. Very few people in America would choose to go back to their ancestral homelands, as they would be economically much worse off, and because culturally they have absolutely nothing in common with the people there!

Incredible video! Steven Edginton has shown what a great reporter he is. Reparations to a group that never were slaves, paid from a group that never owned slaves is a 'non-starter'. Millions of US citizens are descendants from people who didn't even live here in the States in the 1860s, when slavery ended. It's a moot point anyhow - no one will be paying any sort of reparations, any longer. Affirmative action, preference on admissions to colleges and to jobs have already been reparations enough. If people don't like the idea of not receiving more free EVERYTHING, well, too bad - let them deal with it.

These people have become obsessed with their own race to the point that they believe that wrongs were done exclusively to their race only. Perhaps they should give a listen to one of their own race, Dr. Thomas Sowell, who has actually brought to light that owning slaves was definitely a fact of African culture and that there is hardly a culture, ethnic group, or race of people on Earth that has not either been slave owners or slaves in human history. Even in the quintessential book on slavery in the United States (Roots), the family of the main character, Kunta Kinte, is described as owning slaves; of course, being portrayed in the best possible light as being good slave owners and their slaves being members of the family, which is of course, a load of BS.
Bingo. Blacks had slaves in Africa for centuries before European and Islamic slave traders bought slaves from them. In addition blacks sold their own people yet blacks in the US act like only white people were responsible for slavery when blacks sold slaves to slave traders.

Very insightful and though provoking comment. There are many thoughts come to me, as I think about the slavery (and reparations ) issue. For example, in practice, how would San Francisco fairly make reparations. Especially considering the multitudes of mixed race people. For example, former US President Barack Obama. He had a “white” mother born in Kansas and a “Black” father born in British Kenya. Would he be eligible for reparations? Would the funds come from general revenue, meaning all citizens pay according to their contribution to taxes. So, citizens of all ethnicities would contribute to payments to a select minority, descendants of black slaves. Thus, a poor Asian, even one who just immigrated to San Francisco, a wealthy Hispanic, or a full blooded Native American would all contribute. What about slavery today? According to Anti-Slavery International an international non-governmental organization founded in 1839, there are up to 49.6 million people enslaved today around the world. Perhaps the money suggested in reparations would be better spent to prevent further slavery. A very interesting and though provoking subject presented by The Telegraph. The Telegraph, by the way, has been published in London, England since 1855 and described by the BBC as “an ornament to Britain and one of the work’s greatest titles.

1. African nations enslaved their own people or their neighbours and sold them.
2. THe whole world, from the Ottoman Empire (Turkey of today) to China and native americans enslaved other peoples.
3. Why is it only the West that has to feel historical shame for this?
4. It's the West that ended or tried to enforce the ending of world wide slavery.
5. White people got enslaved too throughout history.
6. The vast majority of 'white people' didn't have slaves, were not involved, nor got rich of it.

The American woman at the start of the video has a very limited understanding of the history of slavery. She hadn't even heard of the Barbary Pirates. Or the British tax payer have only recently completed paying off the debt incurred from abolishment of slavery.

San Francisco has become a dystopian nightmare which breaks my heart. For 31 years I lived in San Francisco. Very informative video. I only shop in my neighborhood and I do not go downtown. The quality of life has suffered greatly. It’s time for me to move so sad. I hope to come back one day to see a vibrant city.

It's insane. What I find even more insane is that pretty much everyone save Dr Swaine seemed to agree with reparations, the only disagreed on how much and how it should be provided. And omg Nikcole Cunningham, wow. That is one of the 15 people on the committee that will decide how to determine who gets the money.

I lived in Berkeley for years, but the cost of living drove me out eventually. I still love the Bay Area, but I would not go back now, even to visit. It makes me too sad.
