- Small clip but a bit of backstory to explain the argument. Hilda Ogden bought a hideous smock top from Sylvia's Separates in a sale. Tricia Hopkins tells her its awful and Hilda demands a refund from Elsie. Elsie refuses as she's worn it and ironed it. Hilda tells Sylvia Matthews she is employing someone who was accused of shoplifting. Elsie is furious and confronts Hilda in the Rovers. Their argument is broken up by Annie Walker and Fred Gee.
Jean Alexander and Pat Phoenix are superb here. I've read that they didn't see eye to eye but respected each other in a professional sense. Just totally different people; Jean was a quiet lady who kept herself to herself while Pat was an extrovert and very flamboyant. Just totally different people.
Incidentally, this scene from the 12th of May 1976 was the first episode to be written by John Stevenson who stayed with the programme for 30 years.
