Re: Keeping green onions fresh longer. Since I always use my green onions sliced anyway, the best way I have found is to quickly wash fresh ones, dry and immediately slice them. If preferred separate the green tops from the white part, & place them in snack size zip bags, Tuck a small piece of damp paper towel inside, press out all air & seal tightly. They will keep for at least a couple of weeks + this way. They are always ‘ready to go! Use to garnish a casserole, salad, baked potato or tacos etc.

That first salad LOL. It was so sweet and funny watching you put together the salad for Patrick. I was sad when he took the tomatoes off! I used to be exactly that way, but now I go out of my way to put tomato on things (it's got to be chopped very small though!). But yeah, it needed some ranch and he got that taken care of.

I make what we call Summer Salad. It is thinly sliced cucumber, bell peppers, Vidalia onion and tomatoes. I then make a dressing with white vinegar, waters sugar, salt and pepper. I heat the water and melt the sugar, then add the vinegar. I make a big bowl because it last several days.
    2 to 3 cucumbers
    2 to 3 peppers
    1 large onion
    Several tomatoes.
    Dressing is 1 cup water
    1/2 to 1 cups sugar
    1.5 cups vinegar
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp black pepper
We eat this as a side dish and as a snack. We love salads of all types. I am an ambassador for Taste of Home Magazine and have had several salads published. A KFC Copycat Cole Slaw, a Grilled Potato and Corn Salad, A Thai Salad with Cilantro Lime Dressing. In the Aug/Sept Edition I have great Pork Chop, Pineapple and Soy Recipe in a Quick and Easy Recipe. They are featuring me with a story in the Edition too. I won $500 from their Recipe Contest for the recipe. I promise it's a good one.

You do what I used to do before a teacher at a cooking class brought it to my attention. When I sliced something, the knife would go through the food and hit the cutting board (which is okay) but then I would drag the knife towards me along the cutting board, in essence cutting up the board and dulling the knife AFTER the food was already cut. The teacher told me to learn to cut DOWN and then stop and not drag the knife afterwards. Thanks for your video (and the memory of that lesson)!

Cans of cooked chicken breast and bags of bacon bits for example. such a time saver = we don't have those. For keeping green onions fresher longer: I found a tall plastic pitcher with removable lid with a pour spout. Wash the onions well, trim the roots short, don't cut off, then chop off the tops of the green part so that the onions will fit the pitcher. Add fresh water to about half full and put the lid on. Keep in the fridge. You may have to change the water every other day or so, but my onions last quite a while with this method.

Suggestion... I use a plastic lettuce knife instead of metal knife to slice lettuce. Using a metal knife will cause the lettuce to brown faster. Of course if you eat your lettuce fast before it browns then I guess you don't need it 😊

I was just about to comment that about the knife and brown lettuce.. I have read and watched different shows and chefs state that. It’s a great tip. I also put paper towel in my lettuce bag. No more brown lettuce and both tips keep the lettuce fresh longer in my opinion. Great video Mel!

When I saw your husband pick tomatoes out of his salad, I knew I could trust your channel. My husband is quite picky with his food, which makes me hesitant to cook. Seeing you try despite that challenge encourages me to keep trying. Thank you!

@@InTheKitchenWithMommaMelwhen I was growing up my sister (one year younger than me) was Mama's helper in the house and helped her cook. I was daddy's helper outside mowing and washing the car. When I married I couldn't cook, should have seen my first attempt at fried chicken, but though trial and error I figured it out. My husband much rather me cook than eat out. The look on his face when he takes his first bite makes it worth it to me. Nice chatting with you, look forward to more videos.

Tip for keeping green onions going. When you use onions, cut off to about 1" above roots. take those roots and put in small shallow jar. (like a small jelly jar) Cover with water to about 1" above roots or more. Change water about once a week with fresh water. Add more bottoms as you use them. I place in fridge in back. They will grow back. I always have green onion as I need them. Never run out when I need for recipe.
