You really deserve a big like from my side because you saved me $1450. My radio and sound system stopped working and I asked Mini dealer to fix it they said it will cost you $1500, so I decided to fix myself. I ordered a preowned radio and sound controller from EBay for 50 bucks and installed it myself following your video. Thanks you for the video
I was able to replace my 2009 mini radio with the help of this video, the step by step instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us : )
wow, just finished doing this.... one of the hardest mods you'll ever do for such a small screen to be installed haha. learned a lot, had a lot of fun and would never have been able to do it without this, Thank you my man.
THX! Your video helped me to break down my 2009 Mini S & saved me big bucks on changing out my non working radio. Only spent $100 on a used one. I changed out the 3 circuit boards & main unit with my existing good clean front parts. Luckily I didn't have to get it reprogrammed. (it's so important to buy the right compatible unit) It was a long process but it was well worth it all! After 5 longs months I finally got a working radio again!
That's the most comprehensive DIY video I think I've seen. I have a 2009 Clubman who's factory stereo has gone belly-up. You gave me the route in to get it done. Nice job!
I hate when you take your time and understand everything you need to do, make sure everything works, and button it all up and enjoy you labor.. only to figure out you forgot something. Haha. Just the way things go sometimes~ Great video!
That was THE BEST and most informative VT I have seen on You tube, I was going to attempt this on my Mini Cooper but it is far too much for me.. so complicated ..
It’s quite simple. All it is, is patience. It seems easy when he does it but when you get hands on, things start getting confusing but if you are patient it becomes easy and understandable. I’m going to do this on my mini but I am also going to either paint or replace all of the old switches cause they ugly!
My friend is a heart surgeon and he’s also upgraded his mini head unit and I can confirm he says it’s definitely more of a chore fitting the radio than it is performing open heart surgery
Great video. I followed this as I removed the pieces. Couldn't have replaced my radio without this video. Thank you so much. Even though my Mini is a 2013 it was still the same. I even for the "secret compartment" that I didn't know I had. I knew some mini's had them and some didn't. I just figured mine didn't. Win, win.
I have do the same to my R56 2009 S, now that is ben there for some time, I realized that I should put some glue or sealant on the kit that cover where the radios controls used to be, because now I have a lot of dust inside the speedometer, Great job, I wish I was so handy like you!
Hi , Excellent video! Very specific, but I would go crazy removing so many screws. I have a 2008 Mini Cooper and they did this same job for me where they install radios. If I had seen your video before, maybe I would have done it. Not all of us have the same ability .
Dude I have to say that your video to remove audio helped me a lot today!!! that's a great job you did here. I just wanna thank you from France for this great help for me today.
Woah buddy that is a hardcore install. Much more extensive than I expected and that was before you had to pull the center console out lol. As much as I'd love to switch over to full bluetooth I think I'll have to wait until my stereo dies lol. Great video!
Dude, thank you for the video. I am facing the specter of doing this very thing. Can't thank you enough for showing and explaining the work you did - like explaining how to solve the Rubik's Cube. Getting some t-shirts from your site to support your channel!!! Wow. . . . woww!!!
That "vent" you used for your mic is where the factory multi-directional microphone is installed with the upgraded HK audio system. So in essence you used it for what it's meant to be used for :-) I have the HK audio in my 2012 MCS and as much as it is a nice factory system...it's lacking as well (coming from years of custom audio installs and high quality components spoils you!)
Hi just to let you know you can reset the trip computer through the rev counter by holding the BC button in while you are on the selected bit of the menu i.e. mpg
i fitted a stereo in that secret compartment, i stilll had to take it all apart to wire in the plugs but afterwards any future upgrades were easy. and better still it kept the dash standard. nice to see new vids dino.
Just did some research, for those who also wants to know. Dash Kit: Metra 99-9309, Chime: LC-BMRC-01 (possible AXXESS brand in the video), Steering wheel control: AXXESS ASWC-1.
Uses all metal tools to disassemble plastic dash parts.... Lays down a towel to protect his workbench.... Brilliant! Great info but the tools (while effective) were cringe-worthy to see being used/in action. I know it was a 9 year old car at the time the video was published but even then I think a good set of nylon pry tools were about $15. Major testament to the scratch resistant to those Mini plastics.... Again, not being a hater here - still probably the best video on the topic I've seen!
Before watching the video I thought you were going to take out the iconic speedometer there but you didn't and I was gonna rip you a new. Very nice good choice with everything as well.
Thanks for posting this. I actually have an issue with my speed-o and wondered what it would entail to fix it. My mechanic said the whole dash would have to come apart. Now I know
I use to install premium packaging selections for Mitsubishi.. and this audio install makes that work seem to be way easier than I remembered. Hopefully this video will help me when I tackle mine! 😂😅
I installed the Pioneer AppRadio 4 in 2014 into my 2011 S Convertible. Same kit, but I trimmed and mounted the original stock CD player (with 150 MP3s on a "permanently" inserted CD) behind the speedo to retain the controls and display in the speedo.
LOL OK YOU WIN>I'm 72 and just bought a 2013 min s and YES the first thing I wanna do is up grade that stereo gps dah dah dah. YOU did a great job. I love how you were honest and just told us yea i forgot to put the xm modulator in. LOL we have all done it. great job ill keep ya in touch. did you tell us where and how to get that stuff you bought? thank. Steve Perchinsky.
For the record, you can do everything from the BC buttton on the stalk as you can with the speedo display. You can reset the trip and gas and mph and even set the clock. You can reset all your service intervals and all that too. It shows you how in your owners manual
you can also reset the trip computer stuff by holding down the stalk button while it's displaying the readout you want to reset, it's a standard BMW trip computer.
I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S with the navigation package. I'm planning on installing a double din Android stereo. This video will be a great reference tool from me. I'll have to purchase a non-navigation system speedometer for my install. Other than that, it is similar to what you did here. Thanks!
My radio won't come on at all and I replaced all the fuses but it's still not coming on. I have a 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman s and as I've been looking at these videos a common problem but might you know a common solution I'm not seeing too much of that it's really frustrating as the summer is here and I'd really like to hear my jams going down the highway this is a new car to me and it's kind of a bummer not to hear my Tunes I'm really grateful to your video though to give me some insight on to step-by-step to replace the radio itself with the model that you had. So keep those videos coming if you could you're a really good teacher and I'm just a chic loves my cool car and I'm not very knowledgeable but thanks to you sir I gained some knowledge today! Please message me back if you have any suggestions I would really really appreciate it specially coming from somebody that could give me not just a guess on the issue. Thanks Car Guy! Sincerely, Penny Lane Pannek Seattle, Washington
OMG what a nightmare, how the hell do they put these cars together😊. Good video thanks, you've put me off swapping my centre console to a sat nav console!
I’m looking at buying a R56 Cooper S for the summer here in the UK. Great video, hope to get a similar kit for the new car as I’ve heard the stereos aren’t great from factory.
Great knowledge from your clip!!!! Excellent. Kindly provide the details for the stereo and where I can purchase it from as well as all the accessories from please. I am in the UK.
Great video. Thank you for making it. My only comment would be that it instead of routing the microphone cable through the access hole on the side of the dash as you did it would probably be easier to run it all the way down to below the dash. I believe that would allow the cable to be completely hidden in the door jam tucked under the rubber molding. Regards,
Hey, Dino! Long time fan. So I just bought a R56 MINI and I'd really like to replace the radio, much like this. I'd prefer to keep the computer controls, but it looks like that may not be possible. My question is, have you run into any issues after removing the controls on the front? I hear it's pretty integrated into the MINI computer and can cause some electrical gremlins. If you haven't had any problems with it in the last year, then I guess there's nothing stopping me from just ripping the sucker out!
Great video! I spoke to an installer who said that I might have an amp driving my speakers. Did you have to wire for an existing amp? Apparently the Minis that came with the Harman Kardon sound system had a separate amp. my '08 has two door speakers and I am thinking it might be using an amp as a crossover?.
Thanks for the video. I just need to get to that fuse on the back of the radio. And you are a glutton for punishment with the placement of that bluetooth mic! 😁
Great video. Great video personality. Right NOW, I'm considering getting an '08. I've been looking for issues for MINI's to help eliminate surprises. This video really helps. I wanted the possibility of a back up camera, double DIN with navigation WITH Bluetooth, no less. You show that it can happen. Nothing in the video looks difficult at all, just time consuming. How long was you start to finish, do you think?
Just replaced the radio in my R56 with a Kenwood GPS unit. I too am trying to keep the computer display instead of using the blank outs. I was able to disconnect the ribbon cable from the back of the computer display and as a result was able to leave the display and controls in place. Of course, now there is no power to the display. However, I was able to take apart the radio head unit to expose the ribbon cable all the way back to where the original wire harness was plugged into. So the question is what powers the computer display? It looks like the radio harness is divided into 3 sections. There is a right bottom section that has 9 wires in it. I would assume that would power the radio and speakers. There is a left bottom section that has 2 black coded wires and access to the fuse. And then there is the top section, which is divided into 2 parts. Does that work the computer? The reason I don't know is because I did not put the radio in. I had my local Best Buy guy do it and he frankly did not have the time to chase my idea. What do you think? Is this the possible space for the computer inputs, etc?
That display is controlled by the board in the factory radio. The only way to keep it is to keep the entire board intact, along with the CD mechanism. The info on that display is also present on the tachometer display and can be accessed with the button on the end of the turn signal lever. You reset any function by pressing and holding the button until it resets. No need to keep the display in the middle.
HackaweekTV I was able to remove the entire cd mechanism and keep all 3 boards intact. Then I closed the unit back up to cover all the boards. What I don’t know is what set of wires work the display. I’m thinking its the set of 24 (2 sets of 12)above the square set of wires. All these wires are placed in a shared harness in the back of the radio. Am I thinking correctly? I don’t want to tear into the dash again only to be wrong. And yes, I do use the tach display now, but would like use of the original.
Great video - thank you. It also had the effect of suddenly making the crappy Mini radio/stereo sound much better so I won't be changing it anytime soon! >:/
I realize this video was uploaded 4 years ago, but do you think you could drop links of all the gear you used to upgrade each part? I’m thinking I’d like to do the same in my 2009 Mini Cooper S R56. I would venture to say since your is a 2007 and it’s same generation car, all the equipment is compatible. Those links to where you purchased everything would really help me and I’m sure others out!
We're you able to do it? I'm planning on doing this on my r55 but I'm worried that all the speakers won't work, if you did, did you get sound from all 10 speakers?
That was incredible. I have a 2007 mini cooper just like yours. I would pay you to do mine. But I am sure you would hate to go through all that hassle again.
Yup there’s something in the order of 50 screws to remove, some hid behind bits of trim on dash top. Much fun. The Cooper S is supercharged by the way, not turbocharged. Just thought I’d mention that.
Fantastic detail on the disassembly and assembly. Props on a very well done video! Thank you for sharing. The part at the end where you realized you forgot the XM radio gave me a good laugh haha Side note...Holy FU*K that is an extremely large amount of work to do the deck haha
Great video, I am going to do mine this weekend. Was hoping I could keep the digital display and not have to put the black out parts in the speedometer. Do you think that is possible? Was hoping I could get some of the computer parts to still work. What do you think?
I tried. The computer unit is built into the factory CD player. I gave up on that idea. The info is still displayed on the tach and you can use the push button on the tip of the turn signal stalk to toggle through the read outs. If you want to reset one, just hold the button in for about 5 seconds and it'll reset.
Well then maybe I can replace the speedometer with one that takes up the whole space. Or I could just leave the dials, etc in place. Even if they don’t work.
You can buy the adapter online or your local auto stereo dealers - It's a Metra Part #70-9003. Also what he forgot is that you will need to add a constant 12V wire to the radio/receiver. Do not use the one with the adapter., it loses 12V after how many minutes the car is off and your radio/receiver will lose some of it's settings from memory.
That is a crazy amount of work, should have tried an audio Chanel change first I hear that doing that improves the sound quality if the standard stereo no end.
First off, thanks. Simple with the descriptions and clear. I was able to do the same thing at the same time with little pausing or skipping. Very good video. Now, I'm trying to diagnose a button issue. Those selection buttons for the radio, some work and some don't. Primarily the middle guys. So I figure there's some debris between the plastic button/membrane/switch. I got to the point of removing the speedometer before other things pulled me away. Question is: does that sound like the right thought process? Can you get into the interior that deep? Or do I just need to search for a new set of buttons or speedometer? Any insight is appreciated.
Ivan Ruiz yeah you can, CarPlay is just the software built into certain hardware devices. So if the radio unit fits (like mine will) the unit supports CarPlay.
Am I lucky, your videos helped me rebuild my 74 cb750, now you have a mini. Well, I have a mini R52 convertible. One of my rear windows doesn't come down, you don't have or know of a video that shows to access the rear motor and replace it. I think it has separate motors on each side.
Crutchfield audio!!! import your car information they have everything in this video available, just add in mini cooper car info, go to a headunit and add to cart and it will pop up a screen with all these cables, the metra install kit and offer it to you for a 50$ discounted price!!! ordered mine online last week any questions hmu!
I know this video is super old but I’m curious how you went about wiring the yellow power wires. The harness has a yellow power form the car and also come with one to wire direct to the battery. You didn’t touch on it much in the video about the actual wiring of the harness but I see you connected the yellow from the harness to the yellow from radio with an inline fuse. Do you ever connect the battery direct as well? I just installed one and saw another video where they just wired to direct to the battery as per the instructions and left the yellow on the chime retention harness unconnected and taped out of the way. I did it this way but I have all kinds of weird electrical issues and just wondering if you experienced any issues after the install? From what I understand without the contact from the wire direct to the battery you will just lose all memory after a short amount of time.
Did you figure it out. You connect the radio to the long yellow wire that you should have connected to the battery. The yellow wire to the harness doesn't get connected
I've been considering updating the stereo in my 2010 Clubman. Have you noticed any hiccups since you did your swap? Other than the computer settings you could reach with the stock stereo, have you had any issues getting into and changing settings via the turn signal stalk? Is there anything else I should expect after performing a stereo swap of my own?
You really deserve a big like from my side because you saved me $1450. My radio and sound system stopped working and I asked Mini dealer to fix it they said it will cost you $1500, so I decided to fix myself. I ordered a preowned radio and sound controller from EBay for 50 bucks and installed it myself following your video. Thanks you for the video
A lot of people can install it but not a lot of people can explain and make a nice video. Amazing video Thanks !
I actually felt a pit in my stomach when you said you forgot to install the SXM unit. oh man, I feel for you!!.
I was able to replace my 2009 mini radio with the help of this video, the step by step instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us : )
Where did you buy the kit from I can't seem to find one for my 09
Only video on UA-cam that actually helps on removal of stereo. THANKS GREAT VIDEO
wow, just finished doing this.... one of the hardest mods you'll ever do for such a small screen to be installed haha. learned a lot, had a lot of fun and would never have been able to do it without this, Thank you my man.
Nice work!

Yup. My '09 R56 Cooper S stereo shat itself 2 years ago. Loathed to fix it. Mini's are nothing but trouble.
I hate when you take your time and understand everything you need to do, make sure everything works, and button it all up and enjoy you labor.. only to figure out you forgot something. Haha. Just the way things go sometimes~ Great video!
I usually laugh at meself! :)
He should've tested the XM radio module during the dry run, that's the whole purpose of the dry run
That was THE BEST and most informative VT I have seen on You tube, I was going to attempt this on my Mini Cooper but it is far too much for me.. so complicated ..

I’m going to do this on my mini but I am also going to either paint or replace all of the old switches cause they ugly!
He makes it look easy. I have to run rca cables to 2 amps. So I have a lot more than he’s doing. Subwoofer and a pair are 6x9s.
It really wasn't too bad. This video helps greatly. Just take you time.
I miss older cars where you could have a stereo out in a matter of a couple minutes...but I guess that's why stereos used to be stolen so frequently.
Just Installed a New Sony CarPlay Stereo to my Mini Cooper Coupe 2013, thanks to this video. Kudos for the awesome Job!
Hi!! Question where do you connect the 96" yellow cable?
Holy hell, you must have really hated that existing stereo to go through all of that.
I've seen transmissions changed with less trouble!
It was worth the time it took. The stock unit is just odd to use and it's audio quality was very lacking.
That allows for all the after market goodies like subwoofers to be installed with ease, it's even harder to hook up subs to the stock radio
Im pretty sure open heart surgery is easier 😂
LOL
It really wasn't too bad. This video helps greatly. Just take your time.

DirtybeatZ uk fuck ya way easier that all that crap I bet!

Dude I have to say that your video to remove audio helped me a lot today!!! that's a great job you did here. I just wanna thank you from France for this great help for me today.
mini cooper has to be kidding me with this, you literally disassembled the whole cockpit for this,

CantomericanTV thanks for that
I didn't have a stitch of grey hair when I began watching this video. I have more than Hack now. Gonna buy me some bam buds and good vibrations!

Well done. Great video, great workmanship.
Thank you for specifying the size of the torx bit driver for the screws 🙏🏻

Cracking honest vlog. Thanks for sharing buddy!
OMG what a nightmare, how the hell do they put these cars together😊. Good video thanks, you've put me off swapping my centre console to a sat nav console!
Best bit was the command centre sound effects 😁
Did you have to bypass the factory amp for speakers
No.
@@HackaweekTV Your mini cooper did not bring the amplifier, or did it bring it and it was not necessary to cancel it?
I’m looking at buying a R56 Cooper S for the summer here in the UK. Great video, hope to get a similar kit for the new car as I’ve heard the stereos aren’t great from factory.
You’re absolutely getting a follow from me holy crap that’s amazing

excellent video my congratulations!! Just tell me one thing...how to connect the interface harness for control on the steering wheel?? greetings!!
can you add a link to the radio parts where you bought them. steering wheel controls, beeps, ect
LOL, what a nightmare to replace :o
Good video :)
I felt like doing a happy dance when you got the console out.
Great video, helped out a lot. Now I have a service engine light on, maybe from pulling out the head unit?
Did you ever get this figured out? I just installed a new deck and having weird electrical problems and check engine light as well.
Amazing.... Dude... I got tired just watching you. When can you do mine??

And yes, I do use the tach display now, but would like use of the original.
going into the video, i was think oh yup should be a easy install. never have i been so wrong in my life.
I installed my after market radio in the secret glove box radio fits like a glove of course I got one with a remote.
Great video - thank you. It also had the effect of suddenly making the crappy Mini radio/stereo sound much better so I won't be changing it anytime soon! >:/
can you link the parts you used for this project?
2007 model is 1.6 turbo.
R56 Cooper S = 1.6 turbo.
VERY DETAILED VIDEO!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Fantastic detail on the disassembly and assembly. Props on a very well done video! Thank you for sharing.
The part at the end where you realized you forgot the XM radio gave me a good laugh haha
Side note...Holy FU*K that is an extremely large amount of work to do the deck haha
It is good to see that the mic can be upgraded. What is the sound quality like?
Holy wacamole thank you so much, great video
excelente diagnostic amigo. good job
I apologize if this is a stupid question, but did you need to buy any adapters for the new radio? If so, where did you buy them?
You can buy the adapter online or your local auto stereo dealers - It's a Metra Part #70-9003. Also what he forgot is that you will need to add a constant 12V wire to the radio/receiver. Do not use the one with the adapter., it loses 12V after how many minutes the car is off and your radio/receiver will lose some of it's settings from memory.
That is a crazy amount of work, should have tried an audio Chanel change first I hear that doing that improves the sound quality if the standard stereo no end.
You are good Man...liked it very much !
Ok, I have a great question... it’s possible to use apple CarPlay?
Ivan Ruiz yeah you can, CarPlay is just the software built into certain hardware devices. So if the radio unit fits (like mine will) the unit supports CarPlay.
This video makes me miss my little Miata 😩
@Oliver I just traded-in my 1997 NA for a Mini Hardtop, I miss it, too. But the Mini is super-fun.
Funny, that was the year of my NA.
But, you're right the MINI is very fun to drive!
Holy crap. On second thought I’ll just get an aux to iPhone cable 😂 my 2005 mini was sooo much easier than 2007.
I like the panaromic shade you have there..where did you get them..I neeed protection from the heat..Thanks
That takes a while a lot to install this thing!
Shame you dont have a parts list anywhere..... Im looking to replace my radio as well....
Honestly not sure. I think I ran a wire directly to the battery with a fuse holder.
Did you figure it out. You connect the radio to the long yellow wire that you should have connected to the battery. The yellow wire to the harness doesn't get connected
Nice Video. Do you know if a Double Din Bezel exist for 2002 R53? I have not been able to find one.
I want to know how the side mirrors of this car work please 🙏🏻
