- Living on a Narrowboat in the Summertime with bugs, flies and spiders!!! As the weather warms up the bugs move into our houseboat. Join us this week as we move our floating home further along the Kennet and Avon canal. We go for a beautiful bike ride in the British countryside, set up a new contraption to help us with living off-grid and head to the ancient site of Avebury Stone Circle for an Elemental Sound Journey with Sika Music.

Ula and Josh x
Always cream first.. treat the cream as if it's the butter!
Yummmmmmmm
Jam first! But then I am a Cornish maid and that’s how we do it! ❤ love following your life on board. Great. Peaceful. Great music. Great filming and content. Been here since ep 1 . 🥰
Yeahhhhh so pleased you have been with us from the start Beauty xx
Ethan loved Josh being spooky with the torch, wanted me to replay it over and over 🤣 my 3 year old is so obsessed with watching you guys before bed. Thank you again!
Wow!!! He must be our youngest viewer :) what a super star and such a brave little boy xx
@UlaandJosh we walk down the Leeds Liverpool canal and he thinks you're on every boat 🤣 definitely a big fan!
I use oil of citronella candles to stop mossies. A drop of citronella oil on a cotton ball in your pillowcase is good too.
Niiice idea! I have never thought of that!!
The Cornish are strange folk😂 Devon people do it right… cream first followed by beautiful jam. Love the channel.
So yummy!!!
Two super beautiful people living a beautiful world... Thank you for sharing your lives with us
Thanks for being here with us ✌️✨
I call it scon-e cus its got an E on the end and defo jam first then cream cus the jam grips the scone better than the cream so its best you put the jam on first👍
It’s very controversial isn’t it 😝😝
True.... but gone has an e on the end too........🤔 aaarrrgghh the English language!
You can’t beat a session on the old magic mushrooms 🍄 I’d be able to play a bit of house drain pipe. Love it.
Hahaha ohhh yesss, you know it!! Always a good session 😅
Jam first if it’s double cream, cream first if it’s clotted (in Ireland so clotted cream is not really a thing) so much easier to dollop the double cream on top of the jam
Very good point :)
Watched msny NB videos and this is the first to talk about bugs. In Ameriva most homes have screens / keep windows closed at night. Another reason is day temps are 90 to 100+ degrees so air conditioning is must. Night temps of 85 to 100 are common and mosquitoes are thick and spread diseases.
Ah interesting, in the summer, most boaters get them! The screen idea is a good one! Thanks 🥰
Plenty of clotted cream first then a nice dollop of jam on top. 😋 Rookie mistake with the lights. Live and learn 😂
I knooooooow 🥴 so out of practice !!
It's common sense that you should put the jam on first. Putting jam on top of cream is more hard work imo
✌️✌️✌️
Totally 🎯
You have started a Lilliput argument.
I was going to say that jam and then cream is the more easy and practical but cream adorned with jam is the better aesthetic :D
Oh and it's scone that rhymes with throne not scone that rhymes with gone! :D It's a regional and class issue, or at least it used to be - all those up here in the Middle who wanted to sound posh would say it 'wrong' :chuckles:
I've noticed that lots (most) of narrowboats don't have any screens. That is the first thing I'd add! Needing windows open to be cool requires anti-bug screening for me. Fortunately there is screening fabric that can be added using magnets and is sized for windows and doors. Essential!
In my experience lots of houses in England don’t have screens.
we really need to sort it out!! There are sooooo many bugs along the cut during the summer months !!
Go to a old type fabric shop where you can buy net curtains and the like.
The one we go to sells a fine insect mesh which you can buy in whatever length you want and it is extremely reasonably priced.
It’s like the mosquito netting that you put over your bed.
Cut to size and use wonder web for the hems, then use the sticky Velcro on the frames and the Velcro bit on the net,get a extra sized bit for your bed area and make one up for your Doors or buy the magnetic one for the Doors.
Spiders don’t like Horse Chestnuts ( conkers ) but there are lots of natural sprays that you can use to keep bugs at bay.
Portable hoover is a good way of getting rid of any bugs inside your Boat.
One thing you can buy at the moment is a battery powered or electric outside fly zapper,it uses the UV light and so if you put one up outside your Boat the bugs should go to that light and not the ones in the Boat.
Should be wearing helmets on your Bikes especially with the way people are driving these days and you are on country roads where you never know what is around the corner or going to jump out of the hedges, you would be surprised at how many people on Bikes have accidents in the Countryside, especially during Summer ! Be a heartbreak if one of you got seriously injured because you weren’t wearing a helmet 🤷♂️.
Watch out for the Horse Flies that are around at the moment ( they are huge ) and there are also Blood Suckers about,I grew up in the Countryside and something is telling me that with the way nature is having a growing spurge and insects not seen for years making a appearance we are in store for a very Hot Summer.
Take care and Be Safe Out there ❤
lovely video me old flowers!
helmets i got to mention.
clearance holes on sides not near water( some cut low,)be mindful when moving weight around boaty. The bilge outlets etc.
oooo that funny bum wiggle in spain. The stone circle was great thanks for that too.
keep well you both look super dooper
love from Rachel Betsy BeBe xxx
Thanks for the tips lovely!! Happy Holidays to you xx
its the southerners that say scon instead of scone - I used to be cream on top cos cream was the special bit - and I started with butter under the jam! still learning at 73!
Brilliant! Haha its honestly the never ending ingoing debate hey. 😅 love it
Ooh jam and a big dollop of cream..yum!
🤤🤤🤤

Thanks so much Jeff! That means a lot xx
Another interesting varied video. You guys are really getting into your UA-cam stride 😀👍
Thank you so much xx
The bike ride was so cute! Those lanes just looked so peaceful. Would love to see some snippets of your work adventure Ula! I have never had a scone with cream & jam but I think I agree cream then jam 😂
Those snippets are coming :) xx much love
We bought a magnetic fiberglass mesh curtain for our narrowboat doors to keep the insects out. It works perfectly. Just cut the length to fit the doors.
I use one on my sliding door to the backyard so the dogs can still go out as neede
This is a great idea!! Where did you buy them from??
@@UlaandJosh amazon..magnetic fiberglass mesh curtain
@@UlaandJosh I see my last message got through: to find the one I bought just type in: Magnetic Fly Screen Door 90x210 cm
When my UK aunts came to visit Canada always plopped jam on top. In Canada screens are necessary! Changed our outdoor lights to led solar they light up even after cloudy rainy days (lots of rain here in Nova Scotia) and bugs seem less attracted to them. You guys always make me smile 😊 Tks for sharing your adventures!
Great tips thanks so much for these x
thank you for that it was lovely xxx
Thank you so much xx
That bug infestation reminds me of a time I was in Scotland staying at a cottage out in the sticks in the summer. I opened the front door to put something in the bin and left the light on in the kitchen. Midges everywhere. 😂 The handheld vacuum tip is a good one because that's what I did to get rid of them.
Loved the bike ride in this one. I wouldn't mind seeing more of you guys just riding along, taking in the scenery. It was as relaxing as Boat Life™. 😆 Hope you two are doing well!
Thanks so much Jack :) so pleased you enjoyed the bike ride! It is just beautiful around here. X
13:50 Oh my! Thanks for including. On a Buddhist retreat we were each give a small dust pan and little brush. We swept everything that annoyed us away . . . that alone was a revealing treasured practice.
That's beautiful. I can imagine this would be a helpful tool and very effective if kept up. Thankyou for sharing lovely 🙏❤️
Loved it as always 👍
Thanks so much xx
You two crack me up!
Hehehe xx
Wonderful blog as per 👏
Thanks so much buddy x
Jam first always lol hope you get on ok whilst working away sure Josh will look after everything for you both tc till next time the oldies xx👍🤗👍🤗
He did an excellent job!! I am back now and it is so good to be home :)
First the scone, then the cream and then…jam
🤤🤤🤤
OMG another great advert - I was laughing out loud 😂
Hehe Josh is a good one :)
Well as a complete clotted cream addict i put jam first then cream (Cornish) because whatever you like the taste of most should hit your soft palate first. Ok i might have made that last bit up, but it seems to make sense 😂. After all it's a "cream tea" not a "jam tea". My work here is done. Loving following you two. Love rhe boat, love the van and generally feeling very envious. X
Ohhhh buddy, graemewarner youre probably the first person EVER to explain it so simply like that. Game changer. Whaever you prefer the taste of, get that on top sp it's the first, 😉 brilliant!! Thanks for the lovely words too friend! Xx
@@UlaandJosh 🤣🤣🤣 well it's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Good luck on your trip. Just hide the scones before you go !
Lovely vlog! Beautiful, funny, spooky and very interesting. I think it has to be cream on jam on your scon 😋
Thanks so much for the kind words lovely xx
Those folkies dancing in the rain are even more radical than the folks we have here at The Winnipeg Folk Festival (we usually put on a rain poncho and keep enjoying the music).
Ohhhhh I’ll have to look that festival up
Have a lovely time away Ula hope the bugs cleared off lol,😊
Me too haha
Butter first, then jelly... have never had clotted cream...
You kids make me laugh, biker Josh!!
Always a fun and happy day when you post!! ❤
He is a good one !! Funny man isn’t he 🤪😝
Hey Josh, I just upgraded my Cruiser. Now I can do 30mph or more. Loving it. Stay safe and love the vids!
Wow that’s fast hey!!!
@UlaandJosh compared to normal. Yes. There is a lot then can be done with these if willing to experiment a little. Have fun and be safe!
Wow what a lot of bugs 😊 nice video 😊thank you
I knoooooooow 🤪
I have just finished binge watching all your videos! I came across one and got hooked! Might need to invest in a narrow boat 😊
Yeahhhh thanks for joining us Tyler!! Living on a narrowboat is a rather lovely way to live xx
If I remember correctly our late and missed queen .was a jam first person that's good enough for me.
Actually jam on one side cream on the other was my late mother's favorite way.
Getting clotted cream here in Oklahoma is kinda difficult. So have to make do with well beaten heavy whipping cream.
I often forget how difficult it must be to find clotted cream outside of the U.K.! Other types of cream are just not the same ❤️✨✌️
We will miss you Ula. Hope you have a great time with your photography job.
Thanks so much lovely xxx
Hi you lovely couple. Ive got bug screens on my boat at my bow door and for my stern hatch and duck hatch. Amazon do a variety of screens. Magnets ones too also if you google them theres lots of screens made for boats. Its not 100% bug free though because of windows. Citronella helps a lot too and a hand vac. I did buy a bug zapper but there not that good but when they do zap its such a horrible loud popping noise. It makes you jump and pop out your skin lol. Hope that helps. Lovely vlog as always. Big hug to both of you.
Great tips thanks so much Paul!!!! We have a few months now until we need to prep for this… though we do get a lot of spiders in the winter 😳🕷️🕸️
When Ula laughs is infectious
😝😝😝
Missing you both and your adventures! Hope that you return soon!
Sorry to keep you in suspense lovely, we are finally back with an epic catch up episode xx
Jam first guys! X Love and support from Plymouth 👍
Thanks so much xx
As a Cornish lass, it’s definitely the jam first and cream on top. The Cornish are proud of their cream so show it off on top! 😀
Haha that makes soooooooo much sense !!!
Hi Guys, another great vlog, but not a lock in sight, im sure it will happen soon.
looking forward to your next vt.
Good luck Ula with your camera work.
Haha not long now buddy!!! X
Hey guy's yeah I'm late again sorry...jam first then whipped cream...what's clotted cream ?...and yes Ula living in Aus you needed to remember how to avoid those bug's...great episode again you guy's made me laugh...take care xo 💜🇦🇺
Ohhhhhhh clotted cream is a special type of cream that I believe is only really made here in the U.K.! It is so delicious :)
@@UlaandJosh I'm going to check and see if it's available here I have such a sweet tooth lol xo
Happy Monday yogi....ees 😊
Yessssss much love 🙏
Fancy people say skon not scone !!! I agree with you on this one. Cream on last
Yessssssss xx
Yep I do jam first than cream but heck been years since I had scones. Another great vlog guys ❤
I looooove scones!! Couldn’t imagine living without them!!
Definitely cream first, the clotted cream spreads like butter and you put the jam on top ❤
🤤✨❤️
Peanut butter and jam on an English muffin 😋 toasted of course.
WOW sounds delicious!!!
you two have sent me into a good place.
Nice one ✨🛶
Love Sundays and watching your videos. Makes me laugh, smile and relax. Out of interest, what were the 5 dangerous jobs you did Josh ? Oh and I don't eat scones, I am allergic to dairy, wheat, eggs. 😢
Oh nooooooo!!! What a shame, to be allergic to dairy, wheat and eggs!! So pleased you enjoy the videos. Josh used to be a firefighter and a tree surgeon which are both rated in the top 5 most dangerous careers 😳
Jam First then cream that's what we do in Cornwall. But everyone is different ways. Devon is cream and then jam.i really enjoy watching your videos.love your new washing line. Have a lovely week both of you.😊😊
So pleased to have you along with us sally!! xxx
Sorry Devon cream and jam.we in Cornwall jam and cream.❤️
I enjoy every vlog you pair do your so happy with life I wish I could be the same but I have popped 3 discs out my back and I struggle to do anything at the minute. Have a lovely weekend ❤️💙
Ohhh blumin heck Paul! That does sound nasty.. very challenging to be happy when you're in pain and discomfort. That's probably the best time to find and notice the things that do make you happy. Keep on keeping on and smile through it buddy. Soon, it won't be so bad!
@@UlaandJoshthanks I will get better soon
Love it 😍
✨✨✨
Fab video.
Thank you so much xx
Definitely jam on first and from a Scot, now living in the Netherlands, you have pronounced scone correctly. I was actually brought up in a small village of Scone, outside Perth but you pronounce that Scoon ! Happy boating x
Good to know lovely!! Much love xx
I recently purchased a bug blaster, basically a mozzie light that zaps them, I go night fishing and got bitten to shreds, bought the mozzie light which is micro USB rechargeable and lasts 36 hours, no bites at all on last trip and was loads of dead mozzies on the light in the morning
Wow!! Does it make a horrid sound though ??
Scone’s - Butter, No Jam, but maybe Honey.
Wow i have never tried honey on a scone! I must do this one day x
So glad you had a raindance ! That must have been a great earth sky union
It was incredible!!!! The rain came out of nowhere!!!
You called it to you, and it arrived, just as it did where I live last night. blessings
The cream's first it goes in the pores and then the jam goes on a flat surface 😊
👌🤤👌
Cut the scone in half, put the cream on one side and the jam on the other then put together 😁👍
Fantastic technique ✨✨
@@UlaandJosh thank you 😁
Citronella Joss Sticks work pretty well as a repellant as well tbh. Bob. 👍
Nice one thanks Bob :)
People from Cornwall say it’s jam then cream, but in Devon it’s cream first then jam, I guess it doesn’t really matter, all down to personal choice 😊
That’s it!!! It’s going to be delicious either way 🤤
I do it the Dorset way!!! Butter 🧈 then jam then cream 😂 …… yes greedy but totally delicious 😋 xx
Wow sounds naughty but incredible !!!!!!
Jam then cream mmmm 😋 hope it was yummy 😋 enjoy ur time away Ula pesky bugs hope u not biten while sleeping and use insect cream to help I herd they dislike a smell and taste to a food but unsure what it was u might have to look into it and place it on u so u don’t get biten have a lovely week and the lovely sun did u get the camera out xxx
Thanks so much Maxine!! I had a lovely time away! Lots of work but the team was wonderful :) much love xx
josh home alone this is gonna be fantastic lol get the beers in josh
Ohh there's been alot of beers happening mate, few of the boys round for bbq, beers and fishing! Winning
I do watch your every week🎉😢❤
Thank you for joining us xx
Sorry guys still playing catch up, still love your channel 😊😊
Thanks so much Phil!! Glad you are here for the ride
Jam first then cream yum yum
Sooo yummy
Please, please wear a bike helmet. The damage from a small fall to your head can be life changing. Especially with these electric bikes ❤
Thank you for the concern Ann! You are so right!!
TheCraftyFloater is the lady who does flyscreens for narrowboats
Legend! Thanks so much for that. We'll try and get hold of her on Facebook maybe? X
Warm scone, cream first then jam. Enjoy!
🤤🤤🤤
Wild guys, just wild. I’m going to miss you Ula 😢
I wont be gone for long xx
We wish you much success on your assignment and we’ll miss you on the vlog😊
Won’t be gone for long :)
The bug issue is easy.
Leave windows open
put a light on outside
switch off all lights inside
wait 20 minutes
shut windows
It worked for me when I did in in an old house in the county
We tried that as this is what i used to do in aus… but these bugs seemed pretty stubborn 🤪
@@UlaandJosh
Not all bugs are attracted by light.
Mosquitoes, for example.
For those, I have a thing with liquid that plugs into the wall.
It is rated at 4w and I only need it in the night.
They are quite cheap, so could be worth a try presuming 4w overnight is not an issue.
Definitely jam first then cream. Bugs don’t just invade boats in the summer, they invade houses too! Gosh that light on Josh’s face was super scarey. X
There were sooooooo many bugs!! It is quite crazy just how many there are here in the summertime
Thanks at last someone from the UK 🇬🇧 can pronounce it right SCONES thanks guys stay safe and happy and stay boating cheers Barry Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
✨👌❤️
Need a major declutter is in order 😎🤣👍🏼
Not sure that’s possible buddy haha
Enjoyed the video, I visit my brother on his boat, the bugs drive me nuts, sure they think, O fresh blood! Lol just wish you'd wear a helmet on those bikes(end of lecture). Enjoy your work trip, stay safe both.
Sooooo many bugs 🐜 🦟🕷️
🍓then cream! 😋
Nice ✌️
Been following all your videos. You seem like such a chilled and wonderful couple! Wish you happiness and safe blessings on the rest of your adventures! I live in Worsley, Salford right by a canal (famous for being the first copper mining place). Lovely walks and beautiful setting. If you ever get to north west, you should give it a try. 😊
Ps. Let me know if you ever past our canals, I’ll drop you guys some treats off for your travels
Amazing!! I didn’t know that! I work a lot with copper and bronze and so it would be so cool to pass past :)
@@UlaandJosh the water is actually copper colour too if you Google ‘Worsley village canal’ or something like that lol. They had the first mines here that go underground they’ve made a feature of it. We rent a barge from a friend m sometimes and there’s a direct route in to the centre of town where you can stop off for drinks and food. It’s lovely and well worth the trip :) take care
I put the cream on first and then the strawberry jam it's the best from the USA 🇺🇸
Yuuuuuuummmmmmmm
Ula for a minute I did think you were going to put Josh outside with the light to attract the bugs! 😂
Hahaha tempting 😈
Mosquitoes will pass up everything just to get to me. Apparently I am a tasty treat. Looking forward to your next video!
They absolutely loooooove me too!!
@@UlaandJoshIn that case I offer my sincere condolences.
Butter, then jam on my scone (the “o” has a long sound, like you mow grass, here in the USA)
Wow really!! 😳😝
That most famous website sells mossie mesh! At least you don't have Aussie spiders - I don't miss those thats for sure! Don't worry Ula, we will all get together and look after Josh for you, but we will miss you!
Take good care of him 😝✌️
Hola Josh & Ula,fantastic video from you both.Personally I love a plain scone with cream then a touch of jam or just butter on its own 😉….is it weird not having regular neighbours??
Take care of each other 🙏
To be honest, sometimes we miss not having a fixed community… but neighbours… not really! We have had some terrible ones in the past haha
One minute it's there, the next , it's Scone.
They're the best kinda ones iain!
