Enclose the open end wall with another vertical wall, would make a significant difference in the retained heat in the shelter. Less fuel, more warmth...

Why use firewood for the shelter. Smaller branches could accomplish the same and then you'd have real decent firewood insread of brush!! Gotta wonder
