      for number four, it's really focus. Focusing on what you are doing rather than just letting it happen.

    Reminds me of something I hear photographers say: The amateur worries about his equipement, the professional cares about composition, while the master is concerned with the lighting.

    Great advice, the reason great paintings are so compelling is because the image you see has passed through a brain, not just through a pair of eyes or a lense.

    Yes, strive to paint a masterpiece, but do not expect it. The expectation that the painting HAS to be a masterpiece is what often stops people from completing a work or learning from their mistakes. Our mistakes are our best teacher.

    I am a color addict so for me it's the colors of a painting that get my attention first and compel me to take a closer look. Then on closer inspection I take note of the style in which it's painted and then the subject matter after that.

  • @Dr10Jeeps

    I couldn't agree more. For example, for those paintings that I never finish it's always because I realize at some point in the painting process that the composition or subject matter is simply not interesting. No matter how well I paint it, it just is not going to be appealing. In contrast, I have painted well-composed and interesting subject matter less than my best but these paintings often become the most popular. In short, your insights into the painting endeavour are bang on Mark (as always).

    I slightly disagree with the message or making the mindset be concerned with "masterpieces". I've found that some of my best work has come about when I "let go" of that pressure and let my subconcious kind of take me on a journey. I think progress can come from exploration and lack of fear rather than concious striving to "improve".

      There has to be both. I have done the same, but it is STRONGLY suggested that you switch between letting whatever hit the canvas and actually focusing step by step. If you don't do this, you could find yourself 10 years later doing the same thing or not improving because of that. I've done it before.

    • @heliospantazis216
      @heliospantazis216 4 роки тому +8

      That's a pretty interesting comment. I think there should be a balance though. You have to push yourself to improve and get out of your comfort zone , but at the same time that idea should not be daunting. No effort spent on your art is a waste of time or is a failure- even if it doesn't come out as intended. I think it comes down to feeling comfortable enough with yourself as an artist to explore all possibilities.
      Thanks to whoever may have seen my long comment :p

    I agree very much with your message and very strong to begin with your first example with Popper - very strong demonstration of what this is about,
    I call the " subject matter" musicality, atmosphere , the Lights, the rhythms, the attunement -
    and how you paint is maybe more about movement and tactility - and not l about how well you painted it.

    I agree completely with what you brought up during the video on how important subject-manner n composition is to one's art. especially when you start a new piece how does it" grabs you "n won't let you go .. sure brush stroke is important just as one color is in relation to another n how they complement each other... I'll find myself sometimes getting halfway through a piece and loose my enthusiasm and I force myself to continue and at the end be amazed just how well it actually turns out.i personally want to thank you for everything you do for the community, kudos to you Mr. Carder.

    Timely, concise and knowledgeable advice. It’s almost the same advice I just received from a very respected Art Gallery owner just last week when I showed my work to him. He said my skill at handling the paint is very good and my ability to reproduce images is very good but I need a theme. He suggested that the most beautiful painted images in the world are not compelling if they’re not saying anything (beyond look at this pretty image). It poses a dilemma for me because, not being a shallow person, I have strong political and cultural opinions (that I’d love to express in my paintings) which I find difficult to articulate in paintings without hitting one over the head with my opinions. Does anyone have method they employ to express their (lets call them philosophical) ideas in a subtle manner or even tricky way?

      Ilya Repin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilya_Repin) had a wonderful way of what we would nowadays call social commentary or engagement without "hitting his audience over the head" - absent any concrete tricks I can give you, I'd suggest you look at his work. Repin is just an example among many of course, he is the one that came to mind reading your question.

    Edward Hopper didn't mean to paint in a realistic way and that's one of the reasons his paintings became so well known and unique. They have a geometric-abstract flare that makes his paintings pop out with color, light, and simplicity.

However, I disagree with you on how subject matter is more important then how well it is painted. A great realist artist can make any subject come to life on the way he paints it. If fact my personal belief that is his duty as a artis. Like a great musician can make any song sound beautiful.

      Anybody can paint an apple. But, if there is no story, no meaning, no communication then what is the point. I can look at apples anywhere and I don't care how well you paint it. You could be the best painter in the world. That apple could glow, but, if there is no story then there is no communication. This is the "subject matter" which mark refers to. And Mark is right, the story is more important than the painting skill.

    How to be famous and happy as a painter?i asked to my master Polo the grey,old master in my town.
    He answered me :
    "Georges,little human being..my first advice:
    Painting subject what you love is a good way to realize a good painting..BUT painting a subject that is a totally obsession for you will made a masterpiece !
    Second advice :
    Never take seriously the fact to please other people with your work ,gallery,art critics,etc..enjoy painting for yourself like a masturbation 's act ,only the moment and pleasure of create a painting is important..in future years,century we will be bones and dust,totally forgotten..
    Last advice and the more important :
    A artist is a explorator,you must discover your own lost paradize,that nobody before you have explore and to find it you have to travel into the deepest places of your imagination/brain/spirit and soul ! "

    The most important thing in any oil painting is 1. composition 2. light/ shadow ,3 colour , expressiveness and 3. canvas size, the bigger the better/ interesting. Subject matter is not so important. That is solely between the artist and himself only. If subject matter is supposed to be the most important thing than that's not 'art', that is photography/ illustration. Real art can take the most mundane and transform it into extraordinary via light, colour/ composition.

    • @DrWhom
      @DrWhom 3 роки тому

      true, real art can take the most mundane, but it is an incorrect representation of what the artist does if you suggest that he or she can take _any_ subject matter and make it extraordinary
      I do agree with you that when he or she succeeds in doing so, he or she has used light, colour, composition to convey a mood or an idea or whatever.
      but what happens when an artist chooses a subject matter is that he or she intuits how the mundane can be transformed in the way you describe, so the artists matches their choice to their abilities and the scope they see for the subject
      so choosing well is a matter of listening to that inner voice - I think this is Mark's point
      your points 1 and 2 probably represent the opinion of many, but 3 seems odd - never before have a heard an art lover claim that all else being equal, bigger is better

    You need only enough technique to express what you have to say. A painter may have the greatest facility, but if he or she has no personal vision, then a great work of art is not produced, merely an illustration of reality. Or so l have always believed.

    @princepouncer2729 4 роки тому +1

    If a so-called 'artist' strives (only) to create paintings that faithfully mimic reality, a.k.a 'realism', that is not 'art', he is not an 'artist'. He is instead an illustrator/ sign/ billboard painter.. And those are a 'dime-a-dozen'. A real/true artist is a 'creative'. He is a conduit, a translator, an ambassador between the artsy, creative spirit and reality. None of his works should ever look like photo-realism, realistic unless he is doing field sketches, or pleine aire work studies..

      the other three points were also "priorities"...!
      what Mark means is that you can be less accomplished on the other three "priorities" and still produce something that moves people
      you (or I) are unlikely to be the one that produces a masterpiece! but your best chance is if you choose a subject matter that is true to yourself
      also "subject matter" does not quite mean the same thing as "object(s) depicted" as you appear to believe - the nuance may have escaped you as English does not appear to be your mother tongue
