My dog found an epic piece of driftwood that's the stump and roots of a bush, it has so much character and it just fits in my 5 gallon. Thank you for this!
Legit video topic - another great place to collect wood is logjams in rivers, usually debarked and presoaked, pretty much ready to use and tons of wood in one place
A man of my own heart. I am lucky, I live in Central Oregon where there is some cool woods but we also have a plethora of beautiful stones. Huge chunks of green, yellow and red Jasper, columnar Basalt, rare Obsidians, Agates galore to only mention a few. I am lucky.
Me binge watching driftwood collecting videos, trying to learn as much as I can especially about which woods are safe and how to prep and treat before even going near my fish. Also me: 👀 THOSE ROCKS LOOK NICE TOO!
I recently discovered a peat bog spot not far away which is under preparation to harvest commercially. The wood they dug up is awesome red like mahogany, even if was exposed to the sun for quite a while. Due to the acidic environment (~pH 2) there aren't a lot of parasites in the first place, but boiling is still a good thing. The large pieces I 'water' with loads of peat at pH 2-3 after pressure cleaning for a month. Works fine.
This is by far the best video I've watched of yours. I've been collecting my own decorative rocks and wood for over twenty years. I love the fact you included not killing local flora or fauna, unfortunately here lately I see a lot of destruction on my local creeks. Quick question for you do y'all need your fishing and small game license to collect or forage for anything?
So I was at lake Michigan and found 3 nice peices of driftwood, I got home, rinsed them in water and then added them. 3 minuets later I see 1 tick floating on top so I took them out right away. How do I get rid of ticks?
@@brandonwitte7339 What Brady said. If it works it’ll only be the second way I know of to kill a tick though. Here’s hoping there’s no deer ticks. They’re almost invisible.
@@92GreyBlue it kills any pests and bad bacteria that was on the wood that you don’t want on your tank. Also if you’re not a fan of the tannins that leak out of the wood it’s an easy way to get rid of them.
Looks like you were at the south mountain reservation gathering some of your wood. I hike my doggies there all the time and gather some wood. Usually for making log furniture... but now looking for driftwood for my tank. Thanks for the great info!!! Now I'm on the hunt!!!
first off I've been looking to diy my aquarium and this vid is amazing thank you for actually showing me (us) what you do when looking and how you judge what is good enough and is safe thank you for an amazing vid! keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video. I am very new to fish keeping and in NJ also. this was really helpful... even the smallest tips. I've got a river nearby with tons of old ( hundreds of years) cedarwood...at low tide especially you can see all the stumps and pieces. Can't wait to go collect some. Also great tip on just picking it up and saving/decorating. I'm always outside...pick up every stone that catches my eye. Beautiful garden!
Thank you, this was a really helpful video and I truly enjoyed the vibe! I also love your tanks - I keep smaller tanks and species myself, but I find it such a treat to see good husbandry with any style. Beautiful fish and tanks, man. They must be so nice to look at and sit with on a rainy day. Thanks for sharing.
Hope you're still going, youve given me inspiration in finding my own pieces of wood in these jersey creeks , ive set to find any good pieces plenty of rock and slate but yet to find wood pieces but with this video man i feel like ill find one tomorrow haha
Tyvm you are the first person to actually answer all my questions about collecting my own driftwood here in nj with everything you said, I was scared to use any wood if there are some that can be bad in the aquarium keep up the good work and you have a new subscriber
Thanks for another great video man. I simultaneously hate all of you guys, because you make me want a huge fish tank. Keep your eyes open at thrift stores for driftwood and aquarium decorations.
I’m right in Santa Paula by the punch bowls there’s a to of beautiful finds there. Also 15 minute drive to the Ventura beach so I’m always on the lookout there
Great tips! However if you want to eliminate glare when shooting video of your tanks or surface of water you could get an adjustable polarized lens filter. They're super cheap, less than $20
"You never know when you could use a good piece of driftwood" 😁💯👏 I have pieces of driftwood, interesting stones and pebbles, even tons of seed pods that i keep just for decor in my garden and house, now I've set back up some tanks, I'll be out scouting for more 👀
Amazing video content and no joke. Best driftwood doy video. Quick question for you.. do you peel all bark off those vines you showed? I have had a medium size piece for a long time but never thought about aquarium before. Lmk
Thank you. I pull off as much as I can mainly because he will slowly peal off once under the water and I just hate cleaning it up every week...leaving the bark won't cause harm though
Awesome video! I have to admit I cracked up each time you used the x-files theme. Also, your pond and the way you have it decorated with all the plants might be one of my favorites I've seen.
Thank you, I being wondering about this for a while. Do you know if its ok to use branches that recently fell from the tree? During the last snow storm a lot of branches fell from my trees and the have some really interesting shapes.
I found a piece of what I think is spruce on the beaver dam in my back yard. It’s already well weathered and spongy-ish. What do you think about it? It looks beautiful but don’t want to ruin it.
Be careful with spongy wood because it can decay in your aquarium and just cause a mess. I would boil it (if its a small piece) and if withstands being boiled than it should work. If its too big to be boiled I would pressure wash it and if it breaks apart it wasn't meant to be!
the road you was driving on looked familiar, is it 64/74 that runs along the Ocoee river in Tennessee? Also love your house setup especially the outside pond area. Very nice.
Hey just seen your 📹 great job and I love your tanks! Always looking for inspiration for my tanks and the accumulation of knowledge! So Thank you very much! #muchlovefromcanada

Great great information. Question: I live in Louisiana and I have a large gully on my property with lots of cypress trees and knees. No bark, very smooth. Can I put the cypress knees in a tank as decor?
great video. i scored a piece of wood last fall, should cover most of my 75gl. i live in new hampshire so waiting for spring to prep it. thanks thank you to,all of the people out there putting out info for less experienced fish keepers.
Glad I’m not the only man in Jersey looking around for drift wood and rocks 😂thanks man for all the info can’t wait to find pieces for my 55 gallon

umless your doing crazy aquascapes, collecting driftwood locally is best
This will save me thousands for my ponds
Pro tip... dont move the camera around so fast!
Yes I'll be getting a gimbal to knock out that shakiness
Guys running around in the woods probably filming with a cell phone. There's gonna be some shakes

I like collecting dry drift wood then sinking it myself! Prevents water pest coming into my tanks! Zebra mussels, snails, leeches, etc.

Fantastic looking garden. Thank you for the tour.
I Always find cool looking Driftwood at the levee when the Mississippi River goes down to its low Summer level. It’s Everywhere.
Me too!!! Walk on the levee in New Orleans find alot when the river goes down after spring. But the Mississippi round here is kinda polluted and gross
But have you ever drove your chevvy to the levee?? & when you got there the levee was dry??
Hope you're still going, youve given me inspiration in finding my own pieces of wood in these jersey creeks , ive set to find any good pieces plenty of rock and slate but yet to find wood pieces but with this video man i feel like ill find one tomorrow haha
After a good rainfall the creeks flood and you get new batch when the water levels go back down...it's always some nice pieces out there

Most wood is fine. Just gotta avoid softwoods: pine, spruce, etc and soft shrub woods. The harder the better.

Hello.
You shouldn't use Roots or branches that are "new".
Stuff that has recently fallen off a tree is not good as it contains oils and sap.
