This song always seemed so fun spirited to me. If you watch it in context with the movie though, it's heart breaking and suspenseful. It's Nancy desperately trying to create a diversion to get Oliver out of Bill's clutches, the man she loves and "betrays" for the good of a child. It's the last song she'll ever sing.
They shifted this song in the film to play with the audiences' feelings of dread... It's a masterful edit to the original stage version(it's her first song in the stage version). This is Nancy finally resigning herself to her fate and the fact that Bill will inevitably kill her. She's saying to herself "stuff it all, I'll save Oliver... Bill's going to kill me one day anyway so I've got nothing to lose!". It becomes the stand in for the scene where she rebels against Bill in the original Novel

This scene haunts me and always makes me on edge, because I know what follows it. Really a masterful piece of direction and artistic visionary. And of course, an electric performance from Shani Wallis, who skillfully merges pathos and manipulation whilst belting out this showstopper.
Nancy sings with a typical cockney accent. I grew up listening to people sing like this. There's no other accent like it, especially when it comes to how they sing.
I've always liked Nancy! She's mainly the supporting character of the movie! Nancy always knew how to look out for Oliver! She's something that the other movie Oliver and Company didn't have!

I really love this song. It's a catchy tavern song that's all about drinking and sex. The first verse is about a drunk man who wishes he was a playboy earl. The second is about prostitution because seeing a woman's legs was considered improper back in the 19th century. But she (Sally) won't show more unless she's been paid. The last verse is definitely about Nancy's life--she probably was a simple country girl and met Sikes and he introduced her into the life of crime, giving her food and shelter while she gave him companionship and kept house for him in return. The phrase "up a gum tree" means unable to get out of a difficult situation, which perfectly sums up her life--she made this life and she can't get out of it.
Oh gods I love this movie and this scene!! Bill's face where Bullseye starts barking is priceless! He looks up like: ...... the fuck? This movie is so awesome!
I love the way you can see the 'turning point' of this scene (when choreography, music, and cinimatography come together in full syncronization) - - starting at 2:57 and notchng up to full gear at 3:05. It's so beautiful to be able to see the mechanical construction of a scene so clearly, and cleanly, so that you can see exactly when it shifts - - almost swirls, in this case - - into full throttle. Very well done. A great clip for a film student.
6 years later, I'm agreeing! the song reaches a fever pitch and Fagin turns around like "what the hell?" while Nancys goin to town. Such a well crafted scene, I'm still a little on edge when I see it. Not exactly the happy beer drinking song that it appears to be.
The most suspenseful beer drinking song ever. I first saw this when I was 12 and was amazed at the intensity of this scene. It's a great song, but it will always have an edge to it, thanks to Sir Carol Reed for placing it as a vehicle for Nancy to grab Oliver. Genius.

Shani Wallis was in "Gunsmoke" once in a character role similar to Nancy! She was kind of a kind-hearted "bad girl" in that guest role she played. Also, as another similarity to Nancy, she takes care of a orphaned child (a girl this time) and tries to get her to safety. Marshall Matt Dillon comes along to help, and befriends them as they both try to help the little girl find the rest of her family. The stagecoach they were on was high-jacked and her mom and some other passengers killed.

I think it wasn't that more so that she did want Oliver to have to live the same life she did if he didn't have to, which he didn't. she related to him and felt almost like his mother. she knew that the other life would have been much better for him, even if it meant losing Bill. and I think bill killed her more because it was his lover that betray him and not what she did.

She was from the country, But now she's up a gum-tree -- She let a feller feed 'er, then lead 'er along What's the good o' cryin'? She's made a bed to lie in She's glad to bring the coin in, And join in this song! ALL Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah! That's how it goes! Oom-pah-pah!Oom-pah-pah! Ev'ryone knows. i tell you what, when i was a kid i would fear of meeting this version of Bill Sikes in a dark alley. if people say to me Oilver Reed, the first name to my mind is Sikes
@Meepthecockroach yes it is, but if u really listen to the lyrics u might think differently. i know i do. when i saw this movie when i was 12 i loved this song. but now it's like omg i can totally agree w/ some of the lyrics

Oom -pah-pah, Oom -pah-pah - quite a randy rhythm! :)
Best musical ever! No contest,
this song got stuck in my head when it was played at a show of Oliver Twist in my school and it also lifts my spirit it is a song you feel happy about
Thanks for putting this up! :D
يالله على ذكريات الطفوووله احلى فلم شفتوآ وانا صغيررة
Oh, how I love this musical :)
wonderful musical!
Probably one of the first songs I remember.
@Sammy Daley and based on an epic novel.... probably the greatest novel written by one of the greatest English authors ever!
@garzilla3dx Yes, that was actually the point, both in the Book and in this film...
Aw! Cute! So bad when he sees her, though! X(
Lionel Bart's masterpiece - by far the best musical ever penned, not a duff song in it.
I hate that DOG! It is directly responsible for her death - man's best friend indeed!
CHAIRMAN
(spoken) Ladies and gentlemen, brethren and sinners all! I call upon our Goddess of the Virtues to give us her well known rendition of the old school song -- Oom-Pah-Pah!
NANCY
(spoken) All right, shut up, you lot! A bit of culture now! 'Ere we go...
(sung) There's a little ditty
They're singing in the city
Espeshly when they've been
On the gin
Or the beer
If you've got the patience,
Your own imaginations
Will tell you just exactly what you want to hear...
ALL
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
That's how it goes,
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
Ev'ryone knows.
NANCY
They all suppose what they want to suppose
When they hear...oom-pah-pah!!
Mister Percy Snodgrass
Would often have the odd glass --
But never when he thought anybody could see.
Secretly he'd buy it,
And drink it on the quiet,
And dream he was an Earl
Wiv a girl on each knee!
CUSTOMERS AND NANCY
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
That's how it goes.
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
Ev'ryone knows...
NANCY
What is the cause of his red shiny nose?
Could it be...oom-pah-pah!?
Pretty little Sally
Goes walking down the alley,
Displays her pretty ankles to all of the men.
They could see her garters,
But not for free-and-gratis--
An inch or two, and then she knows
When to say when!
ALL
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
That's how it goes.
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
Ev'ryone knows...
NANCY
Whether it's hidden, or whether it shows --
It's the same...oom-pah-pah!
She was from the country,
But now she's up a gum-tree --
She let a feller feed 'er, then lead 'er along
What's the good o' cryin'?
She's made a bed to lie in
She's glad to bring the coin in,
And join in this song!
ALL
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
That's how it goes!
Oom-pah-pah!Oom-pah-pah!
Ev'ryone knows.
NANCY
She is no longer the same blushing rose
Ever since ... oom-pah-pah!
(spoken) Altogether now!
NANCY
(sung) There's a little ditty
They're singing in the city
Espeshly when they've been
On the gin
Or the beer
If you've got the patience,
Your own imaginations
Will tell you just exactly what you want to hear...
COMPANY
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
That's how it goes,
Oom-pah-pah! Oom-pah-pah!
Ev'ryone knows.
They all suppose what they want to suppose
When they hear...oom-pah-pah!!
ALL

Oom Pah Pah is her final song she dies shortly after!
That scene at London Bridge still haunts me today at age 38... and I first saw this magnificent film at age 7! :'(
@Cinderaly001 Still, it's been ages since this vid has been up here, it was the only one that was missing I think. Well played for uploading it. :)

One of my favourite Nancy songs in Oliver Oom Oom Pah Pah has made want to get drunk and start singing it lol
To me one of the saddest part of the movie is when Bill kills her. But he got his just desserts in the end.
