    Hugh Griffith's part in the film was effectively a 'cameo', but his portrayal of the inebriated magistrate is a master class of the art of Character Acting. From the moment he enters the courtroom he absolutely dominates the scene. Quite brilliant, & hilariously funny to boot !

    Ha. I grew up watching this in the 90s. I was born in 93 and thought this was a recent movie at the time. I can't believe this is from the 60s! A timeless classic.

    I always go through the whole “if you hate their face, their acting is top tier” speech over in my head every time I see Bill Sykes in this film. As a child I remember being frightened of him, excellent performance! Excellent performances from the entire cast, honestly, even the drunk judge - he makes me crack up every time 😂

      The fact that a small part like the drunk judge was played by an Oscar winner (Hugh Griffith) just shows what a strong cast this is. Great film!

      He was played by the late Hugh Griffith (1912-1980), who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Ben-Hur. Sadly, he was an alcoholic in real life. Another great talent destroyed by the bottle.

    From 3:04-3:14, it was so nice that Oliver refused to say where he comes from and who takes care of him just to keep Fagin and the other thief kids safe only because they were kind to grant his fortune of love and happiness and gave him a place to sleep and food to eat.

    I always thought the bookstore owner was a really sweet man to come to court and clear the mistake up. It could have been so much easier for him to mind his own business and not leave his shop.

    • @afriendofbean
      @afriendofbean 4 місяці тому

      @aminsadeghpour1549 I agree. Maybe he was closed up for the day and came to court but, I was also glad he bailed Oliver out saying that Oliver was not guilty and Mr. Brownlow was kind enough to adopt Oliver out of apology for the misunderstanding.

      @@aminsadeghpour1549 Yes that's true. I was very glad that the bookstore owner walked into the courtroom to bail Oliver out and if his store was still open, maybe he might have said to his customers, "folks, I need everyone to step out, I'm closing up for at least an hour because something personal came up" where he went to the courtroom to bail Oliver out. Most likely he had trouble catching up with the police to tell them as they were all running to catch Oliver which is why he didn't say anything earlier but was able to tell them in the courtroom because they weren't running around at that point. In some ways from 3:42-3:43, Mr. Brownlow somehow was also against the judge passing that evil sentence even though he was assuming that Oliver really did rob him.

    • @afriendofbean
      @afriendofbean 4 місяці тому

      @@aminsadeghpour1549 Yes, maybe somehow Mr. Brownlow saw Dodger and Charlie protecting Oliver by misleading the police in other directions and noticed they kept him hidden in a bag which is why he was against the judge passing the sentence. Plus maybe he felt something was not right when Oliver was refusing to say where he lives, comes from, and who looks after him since Oliver was trying not to point out about Fagin and his hideout. Not only that but, Mr. Brownlow must have felt bad that Oliver was an orphan.

    Someone writes "It's disgusting " that Oliver! won best picture and 2001 did not --calling it " old-fashioned." Now that it is 2024. We see that Oliver! is timeless. crime. neglect kindness and sacrifice have never gone out of style while the Space shuttle is no more. Satellites do all the exploring save the International Space station. None of the beautiful images and technically brilliant shots in 2001 have come to pass. We've yet to see whether computers turn on us like HAL did. I am showing my ignorance I guess ,but it seems to me 2001's final scenes are a different movie than the first half. Is that allowed or praised? It's poetry of images not words and I am sure I could not communicate to someone else what it was about. I don't think viewers should have to consult the director's or author's notes and explanations to figure out the ending.

      That's your opinion, buster. You perhaps have no insight into what Oliver is about. It is a much more real life relevant tale than blue danube set to star scape. I don't give a stuff who a director is, if the story moves me not as a human being. Oliver rings all the bells - from one of the greatest humanitarians Charles "Fuck You" Dickens.
