Sometimes i would singalong this song until the tears don't allow me to sing anymore, one of the most beautiful genuine songs i have ever had the joy to listen to.
I recently introduced this beautiful song to both of my sons. By the fifth time of playing it in a row (their request), we all were sing in harmony. It was a beautiful bonding moment. My youngest used Wagon Wheel in a talent show, because he said daddy loves it. Teared me up. Lol
We played this a lot during my 07-08 deployment to Afghanistan. I’ve cried and screamed during this song since then. From Raleigh to Fayetteville. This song still pulls me out of some dark shit. Thank you.
"Wagon Wheel" is definitely one of the most beautiful pieces of American folk music. You guys know how to wash away from my soul the dust of everyday life! This music means a lot to me and has undoubtedly been my favorite piece since I was a child. I'm 22 now and I still can't listen to these fiddle solos without having a bright smile. It's because of this song that I picked up the banjo. It's what sparked my passion for the United States and its amazing people. And it's the tune I first heard when I set foot on North American soil. May the blessings of God encompass you all. May the divine favor extend to the Appalachian mountains and its splendid culture, deeply intertwined with its roots and history. Happy birthday to this American classic! I'd love to see you on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium one day! Greetings from France.
This is the National Anthem of Appalachian Trail thru hikers making their way up that 2200 mile footpath. It's sung many nights in my yard in Lehigh Gap, PA ;-) Happy Birthday, Wagon Wheel!!!
Torn to shreds in a bad way? I will finally see them live this year and I'm very excited for it. Hope they play this song but honestly they just seem to kick ass live. I listened to their memorial day show at the del fest many times.
@@michaelberry8 LOL. Yes it is. Ketch from OCMS took the chorus from a then unreleased bootleg Dylan song and then wrote the versus making the song wagon wheel. Who do you think wrote this song.
I vividly remember my folks introducing my siblings and I to this song right about when it came out. Not my cup of tea at first but I grew to love it, and bluegrass on the whole, very quickly. When this jam was on, the mood in the house was elevated. Grateful to my folks and OCMS for such kind memories.
Dylan credited the phrase "Rock me, mama" to bluesman Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, who recorded a song with this title in 1944. He likely got it from a Big Bill Broonzy recording "Rockin' Chair Blues" from 1940 using the phrase "rock me, baby". The phrase "like a wagon wheel" is used in the 1939 Curtis Jones song "Roll Me Mama" that includes the lines "Now roll me over, just like I'm a wagon wheel" and "just like I ain't got no bone". He re-recorded it in 1963 as "Roll Me Over", with some of the lyrics. In the meantime, Lil' Son Jackson came up with "Rockin' and Rollin" in 1950 using the phrase "Roll me, baby, like you roll a wagon wheel".
Caught a trucker outta Philly, had a nice looooooong toke...man this line spoke to me when I was younger. You boys make us in VA really proud. Keep going for that top spot, Alabama Hightest! God Bless!
I love this so much, and the story of Bob Dylan and the respect y'all had for him. Sorry Darius stole all the glory of this great story. I like your version best.
[from Wikipedia] (Dylan) said ‘I didn’t write that; Arthur Crudup did.’ Arthur Crudup said, ‘I didn’t write that; [Big] Bill Broonzy wrote that.’ Bill’s first recording of the derivative of ‘Rock Me Mama’ is around 1928. That’s a true folk song-one that has gathered a lot of dust on the fender before it ever rolled into your town. And songs like that tend to last longer because they’ve been influenced by such lasting voices.
About 20 years ago today I saw OCMS. A bandmate of mine said let’s go down to Amoeba Music store to see a string band like us, we get there and they’re on a make shift stage and they open with wagon well, I feel in love with those guys. I never watched the country Music award show but that year I did think OCMS would walk away with some awards, sadly they never made it on the show. I think its because all the other stars, the men wore tee shirts and blue jeans and the women all wore the same outfits, like coming off a conveyer belt wearing the same clothe and OCMS didn’t fit that scene.
You guys have this song so incredibly polished after all these years. I have to wonder how annoying it is to have to keep playing it over and over again forever because it’s the main one song everyone wants to hear. I play this one sometimes, just me and my guitar. I forget how fast you guys play it honestly cuz I slow it down when I play I guess and try to dig into the emotions that the lyrics give me. Hell of a song but even then I don’t think it’s your best one or the one that fits the band the best.

Great cover of a Bob Dylan and Jeff Secor song, Darius didn’t write it, nor did OCMS, nor did Mumford and Sons. Darius made it famous I guess, but I first heard the song on the CMA’s or the Grammy’s when Bob Dylan appeared with Mumford and Sons, to perform this, soooo long ago, 2012 maybe?
