Great video! Correction to the correction though. Although humans are the default Mythras characters, just about any species is playable, given that all species are created in the same way. The rulebook even has several non-human player character options provided in the Creatures chapter: centaurs, dwarves, elves, halflings, iqari (men/bird hybrids), minotaurs, and panthotaurs.
Yeah you are absolutely right! It was difficult to organize in a sole video everything, but you are absolutely right! Thank you for the heads up, it’s important for those reading the comments to have as much info as possible!
A great video for spreading the word. I would have also mentioned how in the *long run* Mythras has *fewer* rules because you are not getting a new special ability every level. In D&D almost every level of every class is a new rule to learn.
I'm playing in a 5e campaign myself at the moment, and I have to say, I find this one of the most daunting things: the sheer scope of abilities for each class, race and level. Roll in the prestige classes and those from supplements, and it really is bewildering. Mythras is sometimes criticized for being too crunchy or having too many combat options - but they are all there from the start; not layered-on as the game progresses, and becoming heavier as one goes along. That said, I do enjoy 5e. It's easy to grasp, has a lot of colour (as do most forms of D&D) and does exactly what it says on the tin.
You’re absolutely right…. Going to be honest: when I published i knew there was too much missing…. But after 7 months of postponing I figured it was better to release something incomplete rather than nothing… in all honesty life is kinda busy and I will not be able to publish anything until July. I do apologize, but I’m only a flawed man! 😛 Thank you for the interest, it means a lot! 😊
Mythras is my system of choice. I've run Mythic Britain with the players being Saxons instead of the Celts and the players, all veteran gamers liked the system. I prefer the term plausible instead of realistic by the way. And describing d&d as an arcade style game, not a criticism, is a fairly accurate description.
You are totally right! It can’t be realistic if magic is involved, plausible is actually the correct term! Thank you for being nice in correcting me! 😃
@@mythrasguild9367 No Worries. I was referring mainly to combat being more plausible in Mythras than in d&d but as you say with the arcade style of d&d you can just suspend the laws of physics both for combat and magic. I feel as well that even the magic in Mythras is more plausible than in d&d. Take care now.
It’s very unlikely, having 2 jobs, 3 campaigns and a marriage to save! 😅 But if I drop the editing quality and just speak with a cam on as everyone does, I might make it. I do realize tho that it gets boring and people get turned off…
Playing almost all rpg's, I would have to say HARNMASTER is probably far more realistic than even RQ/Mythras. I had a player killed by a dagger that was thrown at him, as he was stealing food from a market by a local guard, and he ran off out of town and fell down and bleed to death.
I don't think it's that simple. I have played Call of Cthulhu quite a bit. This, while similar, is quite different in execution. it took me a week to go through the rules (work and such gets in the way).
@@RikThunder33I never said that it was simple, merely similar. I've got friends that have spent weeks pouring over lists of feats to work out their best combinations in D&D and spent hours writing a single character. Urfff not for me.
I dont agree on the balance point with you. As you yourself outlined, even underpowered opponents can be a real danger. So there is nothing unbalanced about fighting a superior foe in this game, as the risk assessment is part of the game. In D&D, the CR system you outline doesn't work in practice. It should provide a decent challenge frame work, but the problem is, the lateral strength of players is way too high. It doesn't matter that a CR 10 monsters have attacks and AC balanced for the fighters when the wizard can pull 50 million I win spells out of his arse. And with shield, teleportation, simulacrum, summons etc. its not even possible to realistically put a lid on this unless you straight up say "ok there is an anti magic field here"
I've never played the game, but it sounds cool. I like the realism of the system. But afraid it's too complicated 🤷♂️😬 Is it in "family" with Runesquest ? And which is the newest/oldest ?
The combat is really detailed, but in a good way. It's good crunch. You can opt out some rules to begin with (like reach rules, which are marked as optional). But the basic system is really simple: roll a d100 and roll less than (or equal to) your skill. It's really easy. Mythras is based on Runequest 6th edition. So yeah, it belongs to the Runequest family, but Mythras is system neutral and does not mention Glorantha. There are expansions with settings tho.
@@Timikator .. Thanks. I understand it's like a bronze age setting, right ? (For both) Runequest is an established World/setting, where as Mythras is neutral and open to interpretation and development by your own ?🤔 I suspect the Mythras rules would be easier, and an update from Runequest ? Also when i search up products, runequest has a hugh amount of content, while Mythras seems to have "only" one book. Do you believe Mythras is like, everything contained in this one book, or would it develop into the madness we see in D&D ? 😄 Sorry for all the questions, i just want to make the best and most sensible choice.
@@PpAirO5 Mythras is bronze age or Middle Age by default, but with small tweaks can support any setting. There are supplements for firearms, modern and futuristic settings. Also, you can adopt any supplement from BRP systems with little effort. I don't know Runequest rules, but I know Mythras has a more detailed combat than Runequest.
I was commited to prepare a couple of one shots with openquest or age of shadow but you *almost* convinced me to use mythras instead! I was ok with just using dodge, parry and homebrew in a "fight back" option a la call of cthulhu, but you almost sold me on the master strikes from german tradition! I'm also a HEMA practicioner. Nice video! However, people should really stop generalizing DnD as its 5e iteration. I have as deadly and unbalanced combat encounters in B/X DnD or similar retroclones as I have in any Runequest-esque system, if not even more! Difference being that in high level DnD, regardless of edition, you always reach god-like status. But the edition does make a whole difference regarding immersion and overall gameplay, and high level is statisticaly proven to be the least played anyway. There's a reason why OSR has been growing in popularity and many players loathe 5e.
it doesent need balance, if you for instance make social character, that is good in getting information, of course he will suck in combat compared to warrior, and could even run from combat, thats to point. "Balance" ruins everything in RPGs
I have RQ6, same cover, different name, not set in glorantha, more generic make your own world not sure what was removed/changed when the change at DM was made.
The actual roleplaying you and your group are doing during each session does not depend on the rules system. A system (be it D&D, Mythras, or something else) does not force or prevent a group from roleplaying. Mythras and D&D alike can be used to tell highly immersive stories with lots of twists and turns. And both can be used as combat simulators. If you think D&D is “pretend roleplaying”, then you’re doing something wrong.
It is not really about forcing this or that, but what kind of play the system encourages. IMO, Mythras encourages a different kind of play from D&D. But nothing STOPS you from playing either game or any other any way you wish.
Wish you made more videos

In the first point, I think "grounded" is a better term than "realistic" for what Mythras is like.
An excellent video. I love Mythras as a system and your explanations are spot on.
