I am so happy about Skybound's characterization for Optimus. He was so devastated by ACCIDENTALLY killing a deer. He didn't mean to do it, but his sadness over it truly endeared him to me.
Thank you so much, I never would have found out about this comic if it weren’t for you, it’s amazing, Optimus prime and everyone else genuinely feel like real life characters.
Fun fact: the Transformers: Prime game had more types of vehicons(Brutes, snipers, etc), it gave the characters more interesting abilities, and it also provided more interesting locations(the Decepticon control room is literally just a DJ booth and it gives Soundwave more character since... He apperantly knows how to DJ)
@@MadeByFear yeah I grew up with it as “the new one coming out” alongside its companion show Rescue Bots, which I enjoyed but Prime episodes aired more regularly for me and were easier to catch. I loved it a lot and followed it eagerly and still have a lot of affection for it, but I have come to realize that it does have flaws and can be critiqued
@@Cdr2002 Absolutely. Prime was one of my favorites growing up and I still like it, but I’ve come to view everything more critically now that I’m older. Nowadays I see a lot of flaws that get brushed aside because “Ooh, it’s so dark, I feel smarter just by liking it.” It’s a bit disheartening seeing Prime fans act like Geewunners with the visceral rejection of any criticism, especially when it comes to the repetitive writing and dull characterizations. It’s like Optimus gets a pass because “Ooh he’s voiced by Peter Cullen and has more screen time, this is automatically better than everything else.” On the other hand, I was happy to see no one was giving the infinitely worse Netflix trilogy a pass because it was dark and had no humans.
You know what someone should do? someone should go back and reanimate the entire Beast Wars show so that we can have the best Transformers ever. the best possible story with the best possible animation. they don't even need to redub it, they can just animate it to match the audio.
@@harpybeagle4931 I've seen so many Transformers fans can't watch Beast Wars seriously only because of the animation. They're totally missing out, but maybe if there's new animation they can know the true goat TF show.
I think it's crazy how cyberverse "the kid series" had higher stakes and an easier time killing off characters (except in the season 1) than prime "the mature series" But I will give Prime some credit I do like turn new interpretations on breakdown, knockout and dreadwing Edit: oops I put the wrong kind of steak 💀
In all honesty Cyberverse had a plethora of characters to kill compared to prime. Prime killed Cliff in the first episode. I consider that fairly mature especially since they revived his corpse right after.
Also some people got a fate worse than death, being resurrected as a zombie and then forever wandering the upside down. And then banished to the Moon having to feed on your own minions to survive.
@@PerspectiveEnd I mean, the episode "Faster, Stronger" demonstrated that the old doc can beat up Bulkie if he wanted to, so the idea of him getting so pissed off he'll murder the green sod is honestly FUCKING hilarious
I Always put Animated Optimus over thos one, not because of the sense of humor only, but the struggle, him constantly dealing with upper ranks autobots telling him he wasn't a hero or even worth of anything, he learns to lead while also being Prime at his core, he is gentle, funny, and just like all the Animated main cast, he has emotions, which is something most of Prime characters lack
@erosion271 Optimus can be gentle and funny and be the leader. G1 did this. RID01 did this. Armada and Cybertron did this. Cyberverse did this. Earthspark did this. Even Rescue Bots, a show in the same continuity as Prime, has him show more range of emotion, and even when he’s just being wise, his advice actually means anything. There’s such a massive gulf between the way he actively helps Heatwave become a better leader and the way he passively tells Ultra Magnus to lay off a little cause his crew does things differently
@erosion271 Animated Optimus is the leader of his small autobot group, I'm not forcing anything, is just that Animated Optimus is probably the only Optimus from the cartoons that is an actual character
@@benjamingomez1761 all Optimus Primes are characters, that’s a dumb blanket statement. You’re acting as though being the leader of the Autobots as a whole automatically disqualifies someone from being a character and that just makes no sense at all. Not every Optimus is like the Prime version.
I forgave a lot with TF Prime. Knowing what I liked and didn't like about it. Unfortunately, for Prime fans, you are not allowed to have a negative opinion on the show. AT ALL. The show deserves the valid criticism it gets even with its good moments. There is a reason I rank Animated higher than Prime and being a hardcore G1/Beast Wars guy is not one of them.
The funny thing there were little moments to have prime flash out beyond his “prime’s dont emote”. Like the time he and Arcee got stuck in the Antarctic. He promised Raphael, the guy who never begs to go out to missions to go cuz he never saw snow, that he’ll bring him back a snowball which was really cute. I really thought he’d pass by Raphael and dump a massive load of snow on his feet, or at the very least scrub some off his body for Raph.
Part of what bugged me about Prime was how it would be smart, take itself seriously, but then be just as 'wtf' as the original G1 cartoon. Prime and Arcee were worried about freezing to death in the Antarctic? Yet a few episodes later, they have no problem floating through outer space? Um. Space is going to make the Antarctic feel like New Orleans in August.
@@danieljeyn9847 a little science can explain that actually. A planet’s atmosphere traps the built up cold on the caps making it significantly more dangerous to freeze to death than in space. In space you’re more certain to explode from your inner gases expanding in the vacuum. And because they instantly teleported to space, their mechanical bodies are trapping air between the plates, which should kill them if not properly transitioned.
@@danieljeyn9847I think it wasnt about temperature but about the snow. There was snow storm where they arived, snoe could get in them and turn to ice.
To me, animated is the perfect blend of quality writing and classic cheese. I know the animation is a sticking point for many, but as someone who grew up on shows animated by DJW, it was far less of an issue for me.
I'm someone who remembers G1. I was out of Transformers fandom for many years, and didn't even realize they were still around until I saw Prime. I only watched Animated in recent years and I love it. It's a true love letter made by the fans who remember G1 and did something with heart to it.
I personally go with BW, G1, and TFA. TFA does indeed start slow, and the "supervillains" in season 1 are a bit...much. However after Megatron gets rebuilt, it really zooms along. I love TFA Prowl, think Ratchet from the show is pretty much where Prime drew its versions direction from, and for a "Young Optimus" type story it's one of the best. I do enjoy many aspects of Prime, but it does move slow at random arcs, and it still has the distinction of giving us the horrible Predacons Rising movie. So I stand by BW, overall, G1 for the reasons you stated, and TFA for a fresh take that stumbles a bit but really starts cooking during season 2 and 3.
While it definitely has its flaws prime is still a good show in my opinion, I can understand why some people don't like it but to me the redeeming features mostly outshine it's bad aspects and makes it a show that I will definitely vouch for.
As a fan of BCS I love a good slow burn, and this is probably the slowest burn possible for a TF show. I didn't grow up with these designs so I'm not too attached to the visual style, that honor belongs to the franchise's 2D animated godsends
As someone to whom Prime is my go-to for TF, like my comfort food, I’m now scared to go back and find out how much of it was empty calories. Great video as always, Perspective. Especially loved that preamble about your days in college. I thought that was pretty interesting.
I watched only a few episodes of the series until i got bored of basically everything. He watched every episode which btw is only 9 more than beast wars, and was bored as well.@@jimimcmahon4522
@jimimcmahon4522 he doesn't have a low attention span. His statements about the show being dull and boring are valid, the shows poor writing makes it uninteresting especially with the character dynamics being non existent, and the times that there were, it almost never is interesting
Maybe you are just so easy to get bored with something, because there are many interesting and engaging moments throughout the show that you probably didn't just want to pay attention to for some reason, and when did the show have poor writing or character dynamics? @@dangipson5504
Starscream as a leader during the show wasn’t that bad he had some good attempts. Using makeshift, finding skyquake, energon harvester, and melting the ice were better than megatron using purple crack. Makeshift got close to revealing the base like if he had something that would record conversations and upload it to the decepticon computer once in range or immediately saying the base location before getting blown up. As for skyquake he was just to stubborn to listen and died immediately only to be replaced by a repaint The harvester was starscream getting cocky that’s on him, the melting ice for a huge energon deposit if he had the ship higher up so no one can jump onto it he might’ve succeeded while megatron would still revive melting the ice might’ve continued or megatron being high on purple crack would blow it up. The dumbest moment was the super speed and thinking on it if he killed the auto bots in the base then close the bridge he’d have access to everything in the base cause anyone alive is across the planet and if you wanna leave use said bridge to leave with everything
New Recruit was easily the strongest relaunch I’ve ever seen in an established show. Adding just one guy to the Autobots who didn’t fit in did so much for the show. Smokescreen’s interactions with Optimus were my favorite part of the entire show. It’s just a shame most of the interesting Decepticons had already been written out of the show by the time he popped up.
This is a really interesting take on the part of both you and PE. I always liked Smokescreen even if I wish he was Hot Rod outright, but I’ve seen a lot of people paint him with the “annoying kid appeal rookie” brush like prior complaining about Cheetor, Side Burn, Hot Shot, Animated Bumblebee, and so on (I actually like all of these characters) so it’s really cool to see people pointing out what a needed refresher he was for the show
I just started reading the new Transformers comic run (can't remember the publisher's name) but as soon as you started talking about Prime being a father figure I knew I had to tell you to go check them out. This is the first time in a while since I've felt Optimus give off the curious, soft yet kind dad vibes, and i loved it. It's only on issue #2 and it nails him better than most modern media. I did really love Prime growing up, and some of the designs I do like, but Beast Wars was 100% peak Transformers, then maybe TFA. Love your stuff, keep going strong.
I missed out on the epic I d w more than meets the eye that everybody loves. So when this comic series started I have to jump in and I agree! The first two books are great. They are by image comics by the way
The only major issue I had with this was the assessment that you cannot get attached to a character in just 2 minutes. I personally feel that you need to get attached to a character as quickly as humanly possible in order for your story to work at all. Failing to make Cliffjumper endearing enough to mourn his loss, whether in 2 minutes or 200, is the bigger sin here. Let's keep in mind that one of the most cherished Beast Wars episodes revolved around a character who had, at best, 15 minutes of screen time, all contained within that episode.
The designs are very evergreen to me, very few take risks or break character convention. We needed more characters like Soundwave; making his name and role tie into his character so well.
@@Bumblebastian i don't see what's making you say that In this case it would be more like Batman but instead of the bat part just being a costume it's bat like superpowers
@@PerspectiveEndWhat are your thoughts on some videos that detail defenses and praises for the Bayverse made from youtubers such as Talon Productions?
@PerspectiveEnd , I honestly feel the exact same way as @UserThatExists . I've always loved this show, and I mean always. It's always been my favorite rendition of the transformers. But watching your video has left me shook. Because as much as I love the show, I don't think a single one of your points is wrong. I do think there are some higher highs that you didn't give the show credit for, like the season one finally or when ratchet invented robot drugs and scolds optimus, at which point you definitely feel the rage peak out. But ultimately, you are right. A lot of the development that the characters undertake throughout the show tends to make them less interesting, as apposed to just as much or more interesting in a different way. And the more I think about it, I've never been completely in love with almost any characters in the show. Like, other than Prime because prime, I don't feel a particular need to have any of these characters in my hands now, because I don't have that strong of a pull to them. Like I said, I still love the show, and I do still think it has many stronger moments, but I'm starting to think that the strong back end of the show has tainted my view of the entire experience as a whole. as someone who wants to learn how to write better, and how to write characters better in particular, I think I'm going to watch and rewatch Animated and BW so I can get a better understanding of how to create compelling characters and stories.
@@PerspectiveEndlf you have any other show recommendations, Transformers or not, I'd love to hear them! Challenge accepted Season 1: Stop Megatron from raising an army of dark energon zombies. Season 2: find all the Cybertronian artefacts that can help the decepticons to cyberform Earth. Season 3: Stop the decepticon from finding more Predacon bones before they create a new monstrous army to conquer earth.
Season 1. That’s just the plot of darkness rising. Season 2. That was the plot of the omega keys, who appeared in the later half of the season. Season 3 was the only good season.
@@dis_random_kid8699 if you want to be more specific, season 2 is about decrypting the Iacon files, leading the to different artefacts and later, the keys, and season 1 has multiple episodes about dark energon, major of the season is just filler plot
Prime was my fav show, I get it had its flaws but besides them it was a great show. Season 2 was by far my favourite season with the whole Omega Lock plot and the restoration of Cybertron at play. My favourite Autobot was Wheeljack when my favourite Decepticon was Breakdown.
Season 2 had Triangulation (I think that’s the one in the arctic) with Optimus Dreading and Starscream. My favourite episode of the show by sheer entertainment value alone. Actually clever action that occasionally uses the environment, and my favourite humour in all of it. An episode I consider to be the pinnacle of what the show can do.
My favourite thing about Starscream's bragging about killing Cliffjumper is that the other characters get more and more tired of it as the show goes on, especially the other Decepticons, but it's 100% more Autobots than any of the other Decepticons manage to kill during the actual timeline of the show. Dreadwing and Airachnid get some kills in flashbacks and that's it. They're also the two Decepticons that turn permanently traitor before the finale. The oh-so-mighty-and-badass Megatron kills 0 Autobots that don't immediately come back to life and kill him. The only characters he kills are Dreadwing, three Starscream clones, and a shit-ton of Vehicons. Every other antagonist in the show, from Soundwave to Hardshell to Skyquake to Predaking, is at a solid zero dead guys. Starscream contributed more to the war effort than literally any other Decepticon, and the show turns it into a running joke about him being an incompetent braggart
There was even by Cbr under RoadRustle's Starscream video talking about instamces of Starscream being a great leader on Megatron's expense and one of the examples was Transformers: Prime. It's a good comment under a good video, I recommend you reading it.
I think the main problem with transformers shows in general are the difference in tones and the quality associated with each tone. The more kid centered shows that are clearly for a younger audience do a good job at that like rescue bots, earthspark, some parts of cyberverse, animated, and season 1 of beast wars. The shows that are more focused on slightly darker tones often are mid or really bad like machinimas cartoons, war for cybertron, beast machines and prime. With the exceptions being seasons 2 and 3 of beast wars being really good for their tone. I think the best way to properly incorporate a mature themed transformers show that really good is to adapt the 2005 idw comics faithfully into animation
It’s kinda insane that the new Transformers comic killed a random deer and it had more emotional impact than Cliffjumper’s in Prime Still in my top 5 Transformers shows though
I feel like a mistake that both this and Beast Machines made is that they were trying too hard to be dark that they forgot to be engaging and interesting at all by having every single character being incredibly personalityless due to them being so depressed all the time. Often I find that the most effective dark media also happens to be some of the most enjoyable worlds to be immersed in, for example the two darkest Nintendo games ever made are Mother 3 and Pokémon mystery dungeon Explorers of Sky. Sure, both these games are incredibly depressing, especially at the end, but they're also incredibly enjoyable worlds filled with delightful characters and so much charm, which is why it's so sad when shit hits the fan because it happens in a world and to characters you actually care about. That's also why Transformers the movie is so incredibly effective, the world of Transformers is so fun and enjoyable, despite how poorly it's written, that by the time the movie comes around and it's a blood bath, it actually hurts. It's why Optimus's death is so sad, because he was basically robot Mr Rogers.
1. I believe Optimus's personality is why he's my 4th favorite version (1. G1 Optimus 2. Cybertron Optimus 3. Bayverse Optimus) he does have a dullish personality he may have small moments where he smirks and cares for his teammates including the humans but a large percentage is overshadowing the qualities that are there. And I also dislike the whole "Primes don't party" 2. I mostly dislike Arcee because she has that sassy bitchy personality yes she's supposed to be sassy but she comes across as bitchy 3. I agree with you about soundwave, I didn't like that they took the concept silent but deadly and made it literal. When he spoke for the first time I thought to myself "oh so he does talk, does he chooses Not to?" Not to mention that he talked regularly in RID2015 so WTF. 4. Dreadwing is best character and I hated that they killed him. And maybe it's just me I hate it when a character is going to kill someone they take their time or even announcing themselves like bro just kill the person you plan on killing. 5. I thought Megatron was pretty ok the one thing I dislike about his design is that he has shark teeth like the Bayverse. 6. You didn't talk about Steve WTF man? 7. How is Earthspark? I watch the 2 part episode but I keep forgetting to binge watch the series. Here's my pet peeve I prefer character adaptations sticking to the source material as in capturing the soul and the look of that character (I can tolerate TF looking different as long as their recognizable for both old and new fans)
As someone who binged each batch of Earthspark as it came out, it is AMAZING Great animation, great characters, great writing, and a clear HELL OF A LOT of love for the entire franchise
I know we are a whole universe apart in the subject of our content but I am a huge fan of yours and as a fellow child of the Beast Wars era, I would love to discuss that series with you.
Man this whole video was such a cathartic experience xD. As someone who recently binged Prime I felt stuck in the twilight zone whenever I saw people refer to it as the best Transformers show
I just miss when prime felt like an actual person, the thing that differentiated him from the rest of the Autobots and made him stand out. So ES is definitely doing Optimus some justice
I wonder where Optimus has a personality there? He made a joke, served as an exposition and sponge for Megatron's complaints, that's about it. And, we are also constantly hinted that he makes the wrong decisions - is this a personality trait?
This was the first Perspective video I ever watched. I to be honest never understood why prime was so beloved, so when I saw this video I instantly subscribed
I'm glad to hear that. And yeah I don't get it either, it's almost like it has some kind of spell. Because for a while I believed that this show was special too. And I don't know what I thought I was seeing.
Speaking of the transformations not being designed, ever noticed this is one of the few shows without the transformation sequences, I think the only guy who had one designed was predaking and maybe shockwave
The only characters I liked in this show were: Knock Out Smokescreen (Partly because, like you said in this video, he's basically Hot Rod/Rodimus in all but appearance and name) Ultra Magnus (Mainly because he is voiced by Michael Ironside) Dreadwind Shockwave (The only character that the emotionless thing works for) I'm so happy that someone finally had the courage to say that Prime is overrated. Animated superior, Prime inferior.
Honestly it's not even that he looks mostly wrong, Smokescreen just looks like a Pallet Swapped Hotrod. And yeah those are all the characters I liked too, I didn't mention them because it was ancillary to the topic, and they mostly arrive too late, but each of those guys had something interesting going on.
@@PerspectiveEnd You're awesome! Keep putting out awesome videos! And I never noticed that Smokescreen kind of looks like a pallet swapped version of Hot Rod, now I have another reason to like him. Hot Rod/Rodimus is my favorite Autobot of all time (With G1 Mirage in second place) For future reference, my favorite Decepticon is a tie between G1 Shockwave and G1 Cyclonus.
Glad to hear that. Honestly I think Paper Plane did a better job than me in most regards, but I do think I made arguments that I've never seen anyone else do before, and I feel like the passion was visible here.
Beast Wars was so good!!! Despite being made on technology that is about as powerful as modern day mobile phones, Beast Wars proved that good writing triumphs all. Also Blackarachnia is better than Prime Arcee any day of the week.
I think you are underestimating the GAP between mobile phones and 90s computers, Mobile phones have RAM in the Gigs. 10 Megabytes was big for memory in the 90s. And yes writing is paramount. I agree about Blackarachnia, and if people were always on about her I'd at least understand it, chick looks like a naked human.
I think I know why the fandom praises prime so much for being “dark” (it’s not really). It’s because when fandoms grow into adults, for whatever they seem to feel insecure that the thing they like is goofy and aimed at kids, and instead of embracing that because it’s what’s made them love the franchise in the first place, they seem to cling to anything that’s remotely dark and edgy so they can justify to others that the thing they like is cool. Nothing makes me cringe more than hearing tf fans say we need an r rated movie or show. I can’t imagine how not fun that would be
To be fair to Prime's darkness and edginess, there were points it was very clearly trying to be. Everything to do with Airachnid and MECH for instance. It still makes me laugh that a show for seven-year-olds had a terrorist parasitize the corpse of one of the other characters and use them as life-support. Still though, I hate the argument that 'dark=good', and I seriously cannot comprehend why anyone would want an R-rated Transformers property. IMO a show should have darkness be only one aspect of it, not make that darkness be the whole thing. That's probably why Beast Wars is my favorite and not Prime.
Is it bad that I agree with just about all of this? I made it through the first season of Prime and some episodes were better than others, but I really didn't see what all the hype was about. But some of the toys are great and I'm glad people with slightly different tastes to mine can get the same enjoyment from it that I get from Beast Wars. Basing it on the movie style (movie-looking Bumblebee who can't talk, philosophical basically Jesus Optimus instead of fun "boobie"-saying Optimus we all love etc.) and then calling it part of the same Aligned continuity as the G1-based WFC games and then making no attempt to link the two together at all was an objectively dumb move though.
I just realized how bad most versions of Soundwave are. I personally like Prime’s silent troll version, but it’s sad that he’s tied as my second best version of him. My list: 1. G1, the team carrying actually good father in the Decepticons. 2. Prime, silent and dangerous combatant who kinda sits there breaking his back by doing literally everything smart for the villains in the first 2 seasons. 2. (Tied) Earthspark, basically a more emotional version of the G1 character, who actually has motivation and is put in a unique environment the series hasn’t done in a show yet.
You at the very least have paper plane on your side. Oh, and Me. Years later, and I'm still not over how animated died for this movie-derivative, no-risks, no-imagination snore, or how this in any way qualifies as being the "golden age" of transformers.
I dunno…. I kind of liked the search for all the Iacon relics in Season 2 and seeing these shuffle around between different factions from episode to episode. The Omega Lock plot was good too. I agree it picks up after Smokescreen comes on board. For all the lack of deep character growth though, the Autobot and Decepticon teams had significant growth and change over time, with characters being added and leaving like Airachnid.
The problem with the Relic hunt is it feels inconsequential, because the autobots could get them all, and they'd still be outmatched by the numbers, and weapons of the cons.
@@PerspectiveEnd Nah... The cons are mostly fodder troops. The only ones who are consequential were the named ones. They seemed to match up well, in my opinion. The relics turned the tide on a number of occasions (e.g. the Apex armor on Starscream, the phase shifter, etc...).
The Aligned continuity is a mess. My biggest issue is that they really didn’t coordinate. Every project in that whole universe is good but they don’t meld together at all. Still probably my second favourite TF series. G1 tops it, and beast wars gets a close 3rd.
@@PerspectiveEndI figured that with your dislike for the Prime and HM designs you’d eventually do a more in-depth video talking about less subjective problems. Glad you made this, and I hope you do some bigger projects soon! (Mostly just rewriting Kingdom)
20:30 I think another thing, They don’t actually make it feel like Cliff was apart of the team in a meaningful way Beyond Arcee’s partner, which fine, it never feels like there’s any vacant hole in the team caused by his death beyond the others feeling sad over his death I think the recent God of War games did a good job of having a character be offscreen but made their deaths feel important and impactful
You’re so right about that. All the other characters have pretty set roles, there definitely would have been a vacuum if Ratchet or Bulkhead died. Cliff jumper dying and there not being any role differences just makes it seems like he was not even an important part of the team. Hell, why is Arcee the only one that even mentions him? Everyone else was on a team with him and didn’t give a shit after the first episode
I think it's honestly a shame in the show that Megatron was just using Orion. It would have been way more interesting if he was just happy to have his old friend back.
@@PerspectiveEnd YES!!! It would have given him some much needed nuance. And also would have been interesting if Orion had actually bought some of his lies and become a more separate personality from Optimus. And maybe stayed around longer.
The only Autobot I unironically like a little bit is Smokescreen. He's annoying, which is his whole point at first, but learns to be a little more serious due to failure after failure on his part, and when coming face to face with becoming a Prime out of complete desperation from Optimus, he turns it down because he knows that it would not only be wrong to everyone else, but to himself too. It's one of the FEW characters out of a Transformers show which is somewhat interesting to watch VERY SLOWLY evolve.
Sad fact: transformers prime is the reason why animated season 4 was canceled. Cause at the time, Hasbro saw that the first bayformers film was doing better then animated so they wanted to make a show that felt more like the bayverse so they decided to canceled animated and replaced it with transformers prime.
I love the show, but i agree it has it problems And im also learning 3D, and while there is a lot of great animation moments and fights, sometimes it looks so bland and just bad it hurts to see
G1 Optimus had the most character of all the Optimus, with cadet Animated's Prime a close second. Energon had all sorts of issues...but Optimus Prime for sure wasn't one of them. He was one of the best parts considering his Armada version being more militaristic, still had more personality and could laugh at times along with his team. Cybertron Prime had all kind of personality almost akin to Primal considering it's Gary Chalk. Prime's Optimus has less character than the WFC one. Hell, Cyberverse Optimus is an introvert who doesn't like being at parties but goes anyways because he's the leader out to bring up morale. I agree, Knock Out is the best given how much fun he has. Animated Megatron is smooth and manipulative, Cybertron is completely brutal, Armada just loved war, Energon was a corrupted megalomaniac reprogramming his Armada team into his corrupted vision of them. Prime's Megatron was a crack addict hyped up on the blood of a chaos "god" who is Earth. It makes me miss how G1 had some gremlin be Unicron's maker...G1 Megatron was an insane lunatic with plans you'd never see coming and even dumb sounding, but it absolutely nearly destroys the planet nearly every other episode causing millions in off-screen deaths, like how he cut off all communications on the planet. I just realized something about Prime's Wheeljack...look at Armada Wheeljack's design. Armada's has those that gun thing that also act like a sword. And he has two...now give Armada Wheeljack a G1 body design and a cocky attitude. And bam, now you got Prime's Wheeljack. The only time the "Bulkhead, I needed that!" worked was when Bulkhead said "What, you needed that?" I actually found some appreciation for Kicker more than Miko from rewatching Transformers. Because Kicker is actively useful and grows. You're entirely right about the whole "dark" setup being fake, it's mainly the lighting and how everyone acts so moody, except Knock Out. But Beast Machines is the darkest given the whole thing about free will, even if that was all poorly executed. God, this is quite a cathartic vid to get through, you have no idea! Beast Wars II and RiD 01 have more going on than Prime and those were meant to be more a comedy. I can tell you key moments that happen in just about every series, even Energon. Armada had a lot of hype moments and tragedies. Energon had exciting moments, among the boring repetitive stiff animation. There was ACTUALLY active genocide of the Transformers that I'm pretty sure by the end most if not all the Decepticons are now down to being counted on your hands, at least the ones on Cybertron. Autobots were literally being gassed to death with toxic energon and dying en masse, even if they were background or faceless bots.
Oh...and the lore. The lore of the "Aligned" continuity really takes the piss. G1 establishes multi-versal Unicron. I missed how UT version was an elderich horror. UT established similar with Sideways and Vector Prime. Except Sideways is the Kenny of Transformers, every time he dies, he just reincarnates into another timeline, even his brief cameo in Bayverse. But Aligned? It essentially removes all that, so thanks for making Vector a boring soulless version of his Cybertron self. It kinda cheapens the "Ask Vector Prime" because he's no longer the singularity that knows all about Transformers being able to travel timelines... People wanna complain how Rid'15 ruined it? Nah...Rescue Bots was what saved the Aligned continuity from it's own dull and boring nature. Rid'15 was definitely a dumbing down though, but it at least gave some character to the cast.
I have a soft spot for Prime as it was the first TF property I ever saw, but with time, I began to see just how much wasn't perfect the way it was when I was little. The season 2 finale remains in my top 10 episodes of TV of all time though, that shit is still pretty cool to me now.
Apparentely we can't cuz most people here only like to shit on stuff Like damn why does everyone just _has_ to be so salty about anything that came after 2007 Can't enjoy shit here

@@abbers0737 Yeah I guess, I just personally dont see that really, same I also grew up with TFP, but with me I am actually now rewatching it now and I am still loving it just has much as I did back then even, I mean thats understandable everyone has their own opinions and likes really, but if there is one thing we maybe can agree on is that they are both amazing and great iterations of Transformers.
6:12 I remember SmokeScreen and Jack laughing when they put burgers a over Vince's Car. Starscream laughed at a monkey gif lol. And I think Bumblebee laughed when Arcee commented on Bulkheads "backside".
The whole starscream rant doesnt make any sense imo. The whole reason he does that it because thats literally a part of his character. He was cowardly and conniving bot who never fought head to head 1 on 1 unless he had a major advantage. Him killing cliffjumper was one of his only biggest achievements because he never put himself in a position like that due to how cowardly he was. So for him to flaunt his 1 kill around makes sense for his character because he was so full of himself to do so. Also steve blum did an awesome job and deserves more love
My personal ranking of best TF shows are 1. Beast Wars 2. G1 3. Animated. Prime is so popular but I keep can't continue the series past certain episodes. Not sure why, but I guess it's kind of boring is apt. I think it's so popular because of the presentation (decent animation, decent attractive designs) and how it's the closest to the movies.
@@PerspectiveEnddo you not remember the moments of pure rage and anger moments? Devastation in his eyes when raph is hurt or when bumblebee supposedly killed. Or when he thought starscream got away with the only things capable of resurrecting Cybertron without threatening any other planet in any way? REMEMBER THAT TIME HIS TEAM HAD TO COMFORT HIM WHEN ALL SEEMED LOST.
I feel this show the same way I do my little pony. I feel like it’s a great blueprint for the fans to make better content, rather than something amazing on its own. If that makes sense
Prime was the first show I finished after growing up with the bayfilms and like 1 animated dvd, and my feelings of the show went from Adoring it as my fav series (by default) to kinda hating it after many flaws became more apparent to me, to learning more about the series production and lore to rewatching it and deciding... yeah its aight. I can like it depite it's flaws, and understand how the production led to alot of things having disappointing conclusions. Then I watched both Animated and Beast Wars and those were so refreshing and thank god for Earthspark to chanelling that same energy after the slog of Prime Wars and Rid 15. Also Animated Megatron was scarier than Prime Megs ever was.
Hey Perspective! Great video, has lots of good points that I agree with. But I have a quick question. Do you know any good adhesives or glue to fix mainline figures. One piece of my figure is on its way of breaking and I want to do one last attempt to fix it before I go and get another. Thanks in advance.
Optimus Prime is like Superman, everyone finds them boring as sin and bad characters, but that's because all of the recent series with them makes them so bland and completely misses the point of why the OG was so good.
Personally, season 1 is boring as hell. But season 2 is fairly fun and season 3 is peak. For a transformers cartoon not including Beast wars. It had a lot of good moments. Each character if you pay attention has a lot of traits that are consistent. It isn’t perfect tho some of your gripes are valid. I really suggest Emperor Kumquat’s videos on the series.
I do agree that it got better as it went on, hilariously it got better when the ran out of the content they planned to do. Season 2 and 3 were never supposed to exist. Season 1 told everything they wanted.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I thought the show had good pacing. It toke time for things to happen. It seems like the good guy "backs were against the wall" all the time. To the point were it seemed like the Autobots never could get ahead. The deaths in the show give the show some weight. The first season was "kid heavy." Once the second season started Prime really shined. I liked the Prime versions of Wheeljack and Starscream but I hated Ratchet! Still, you're right Knockout is the best. There were some episodes that were "meh." I agree the Wheeljack /Ultra Magus /Predacon King fight was awesome. You have some good points. It doesn't deserve all the hate it gets
you do realize that your supposed to hate animated sentinel right?, but prime wheeljack isn't meant to be hated and is (as far as I know) meant to be viewed as cool when he's just an annoying toddler whose whole personality is that he was in the wreckers once@@collectorartist1341
@@collectorartist1341 I know this is 5 months late but here. Animated Sentinel is not MEANT to be liked. He's meant to be an uptight douche that you want to see get what's coming to him. You are SUPPOSED to not like him. Think of Starscream, who is an insecure, greedy, two-faced backstabber, who often gets the shit beaten out of him for his own actions. This is especially present in G1 Starscream. They operate under the same principle; a character you are supposed to enjoy HATING. Prime Wheeljack is a character you are SUPPOSED to like, but he's often just an asshole John Wick wannabe. TFA Prowl but without the caring nature and wisdom. He's meant to be likeable, but he just ends up coming off as a douche.
I came on for season 3 and and after seeing early episode I get it, the big opening for season 3 had the Autobot flatfooted and on defenses while the Cons were wailing on the weekend Autobots.
I’d like to add on some criticism. I hate how in tfp they basically dodged potential character arcs with characters like cliffjumper Dreadwing and breakdown by killing them off for the sake of edgyness. It’s just lazy like the designs (outside of the insecticons i think there neat design wise).
To be 100% fair, Breakdown's and I think Dreadwing's VAs left the show, that's why the characters were killed off. Mind you, I don't see why they couldn't just...you know, recast them? Like, it's not even just Prime, why is this constantly done with TV shows and ongoing series in general?
Thank goodness, I only ever watched and rewatched Prime starting with Smokescreen showing up. I joined the Prime hate train to fit in, but I finally remember enjoying some of those later episodes.
I watched two videos where they give soundwave lines, and they fit in perfectly. Does that prove that this is still a. Good soundwave and they do a good job communicating or what he is thinking, or the silence was stupid
I'm here due to a reddit post talking about how you suck pretty much. I'm glad I came to watch. You opened my eyes, and now I know why I've never come back to watch the show despite mentioning that "I need to* wayyy more than once now. Meanwhile, I thought I kept rewatching beast wars whenever I could largely because of nostalgia goggles. It seems like that wasn't entirely the case. I've always raved that it has the best writing and that Prime is (imo) second best. But I've only watched it through once and I've never gone back. You totally opened my eyes to the dullness and flatness of the characters. Now I gotta go back and watch other shows to reform opinions. I just watched cybertron for the first time in years earlier this year and it rose way up in my list of favorites. That's enough proof for me to go back and watch more. Anyways, thank you for your opinion, it helped me more than I expected.
I'm glad to hear that you gave me a chance after that, I think I know the thread you are talking about. See Beast Wars Holds UP, you want to come back because the Characters Grab your heart. A lot of people say Cybertron is way better than it has a right to be. It's one of the TF Shows I always skipped, because Energon has such a bad reputation.
regarding the dark tone, I'd argue Earthspark is way darker than Prime, as the issues the characters face like racism, family, heritage, legacy etc are way more grounded. Cybertron's fate is unknown to them and the humans are not willing to let them live on Earth. Also ES has a story to tell, not just a status quo with a few changes in settings episode after episode. Best TF show we've had imo.
I personally am an animated guy. I really don't like what they did to bulkhead. I found it boring to get through. I hate that we're I go in the Fandom people treat it like it is the best transformers show.
I give Prime only 3 positives : 1: got me back unto Transformers, as i hasn't been since i was a teenager. 2: Knockout. 3: Predaking. I LOVE that Predaking, and it's purely my love for draconic characters in fiction. I doubt he was done well, but i can't be un-biased.
To be clear, you can still love it, even if it has all these problems. You don't have to hate a bad thing, and if it speaks to you then it speaks to you.
I am so happy about Skybound's characterization for Optimus. He was so devastated by ACCIDENTALLY killing a deer. He didn't mean to do it, but his sadness over it truly endeared him to me.
It really goes to show that you can give him a personality, because that reads through text, and you can still feel his sadness.
Thank you so much, I never would have found out about this comic if it weren’t for you, it’s amazing, Optimus prime and everyone else genuinely feel like real life characters.

@@Cdr2002 Absolutely. Prime was one of my favorites growing up and I still like it, but I’ve come to view everything more critically now that I’m older. Nowadays I see a lot of flaws that get brushed aside because “Ooh, it’s so dark, I feel smarter just by liking it.”
It’s a bit disheartening seeing Prime fans act like Geewunners with the visceral rejection of any criticism, especially when it comes to the repetitive writing and dull characterizations. It’s like Optimus gets a pass because “Ooh he’s voiced by Peter Cullen and has more screen time, this is automatically better than everything else.”
On the other hand, I was happy to see no one was giving the infinitely worse Netflix trilogy a pass because it was dark and had no humans.
You know what someone should do? someone should go back and reanimate the entire Beast Wars show so that we can have the best Transformers ever. the best possible story with the best possible animation. they don't even need to redub it, they can just animate it to match the audio.

Animated is the show Prime desperately wishes it was.
Animated Optimus had an arc as a character. In Prime, he may as well just be a narrator standing off to the side.

I feel like animated and Prime are almost polar opposites, yet both manage to be good in different ways.
Just chiming in because, when I first saw it, I _hated_ TFA's look... but because then I fell in love with it due to the entire package.
I do think that Animated has some pretty bad animation, specially on season 3, but that has nothing to do with DJW artstyle
agreed I absolutely love animated and the decepticons are peak
TF Prime was pretty much a "gritty reboot" of TFA. I think TFA had more heart.
I go with all three of those and Armada, myself.
While it definitely has its flaws prime is still a good show in my opinion, I can understand why some people don't like it but to me the redeeming features mostly outshine it's bad aspects and makes it a show that I will definitely vouch for.
My problem is that I just don't see either Redeeming Aspects or Destroying aspects. It is too bland for either.
The show is an 8/10 for me. Good but not a perfect transformers show, it could use some work.
As a fan of BCS I love a good slow burn, and this is probably the slowest burn possible for a TF show. I didn't grow up with these designs so I'm not too attached to the visual style, that honor belongs to the franchise's 2D animated godsends

As for skyquake he was just to stubborn to listen and died immediately only to be replaced by a repaint
The harvester was starscream getting cocky that’s on him, the melting ice for a huge energon deposit if he had the ship higher up so no one can jump onto it he might’ve succeeded while megatron would still revive melting the ice might’ve continued or megatron being high on purple crack would blow it up.
The dumbest moment was the super speed and thinking on it if he killed the auto bots in the base then close the bridge he’d have access to everything in the base cause anyone alive is across the planet and if you wanna leave use said bridge to leave with everything
Very good points
Yeah, I’d take the slight coward over the titanic crackhead any day.

@@PerspectiveEnd I like prime
It's a good comment under a good video, I recommend you reading it.
just a reminder that we didn't get a 4th season of animated because of this show
I think the main problem with transformers shows in general are the difference in tones and the quality associated with each tone.
I am so glad you’re not afraid to say these things. It makes me feel validated
Yeah, I've never been one to shy away from sticking my hand in the mousetrap.
It’s kinda insane that the new Transformers comic killed a random deer and it had more emotional impact than Cliffjumper’s in Prime

Do not worry perspective I will always be on your side
Thank you for the support.
And I also dislike the whole "Primes don't party"
2. I mostly dislike Arcee because she has that sassy bitchy personality yes she's supposed to be sassy but she comes across as bitchy
As someone who binged each batch of Earthspark as it came out, it is AMAZING
Great animation, great characters, great writing, and a clear HELL OF A LOT of love for the entire franchise
Congratulations on 15k Perspective!
Thank you so much!
I know we are a whole universe apart in the subject of our content but I am a huge fan of yours and as a fellow child of the Beast Wars era, I would love to discuss that series with you.
I like TFP Optimus bc growing up he always reminded me of my father. Stern but caring
That's a perfectly reasonable reason to feel that way, but one that is specific to you. You can't blame me for not having that same experience.
Man this whole video was such a cathartic experience xD. As someone who recently binged Prime I felt stuck in the twilight zone whenever I saw people refer to it as the best Transformers show
It is rather frustrating how uncritical people are of this serries. There's just something about it that makes you want to overhype it.
Given your dislike of Prime Optimus, I wonder what you think of Earthspark Optimus? I personally find ES Prime a refreshing return to form.
I just miss when prime felt like an actual person, the thing that differentiated him from the rest of the Autobots and made him stand out. So ES is definitely doing Optimus some justice
I've not had the time to watch enough of it yet, to really form an Opinion on that version of him.
I wonder where Optimus has a personality there? He made a joke, served as an exposition and sponge for Megatron's complaints, that's about it. And, we are also constantly hinted that he makes the wrong decisions - is this a personality trait?
Honestly, just for having the balls to bash Prime in front of everyone, you deserve 20k more subs
Not really, this video makes him seem more edgy than usual
Nah
The show sucks ass. End of story.
Huzzah! A man of quality!
I'm glad someone else shares my standpoint on this uncarved stone block of a show!
All the fights and Transformers prime look like they were done
on green screen
DAMN!... DAAAAAAMN!!!
That was savage my guy... And so insightful I feel like you could do my job better than me.
What's funny is that Japan decided to dub Prime like they did with Beast Wars with them focusing more on comedy.
That's interesting. I wonder how that turned out.
I feel that prime Wheeljack as a character could have completely been replaced by another actual douche of a wrecker like Springer or Impactor.
Roadbuster or Rotorstorm would've been perfect for that role but they don't have the notoriety.
@@bradensmith8682 They both fit well too. Roadbuster might have some notierity since he appeared in dotm
Congrats on 15k. I’ve been here from the near beginning and it’s kinda crazy how much you and your content have grown from your initial videos.
I know this wasn't planned, but thank you for uploading this on my birthday!
Speaking of the transformations not being designed, ever noticed this is one of the few shows without the transformation sequences, I think the only guy who had one designed was predaking and maybe shockwave
Like there's no canned animation that really focuses on how the whole thing goes down... Interesting that's a point I'd not considered.
The only characters I liked in this show were:
Knock Out
Smokescreen (Partly because, like you said in this video, he's basically Hot Rod/Rodimus in all but appearance and name)
Ultra Magnus (Mainly because he is voiced by Michael Ironside)
Dreadwind
Shockwave (The only character that the emotionless thing works for)
I'm so happy that someone finally had the courage to say that Prime is overrated.
This was so fun to watch. I have warmed up to Prime, but hearing it called out on made my day more than even when PaperPlane did his vid.
'If your Optimus doesn't/can't laugh, then you've made a bad Optimus'
Animated and Micron Legend bros keep winning
That's probably why Beast Wars is my favorite and not Prime.

...Oh shit.
It's fine that you agree or disagree.
Optimus lost his sense of fun along with Bumblebee's voice.
I just realized how bad most versions of Soundwave are. I personally like Prime’s silent troll version, but it’s sad that he’s tied as my second best version of him.
My list:
The only video I ever scrapped way back in the day, was how the Aligned Continuity isn't a Continuity.
@@PerspectiveEndI figured that with your dislike for the Prime and HM designs you’d eventually do a more in-depth video talking about less subjective problems. Glad you made this, and I hope you do some bigger projects soon!

I think another thing,
They don’t actually make it feel like Cliff was apart of the team in a meaningful way
Beyond Arcee’s partner, which fine, it never feels like there’s any vacant hole in the team caused by his death beyond the others feeling sad over his death
I think the recent God of War games did a good job of having a character be offscreen but made their deaths feel important and impactful
@@abbers0737
The others mention him a couple times every now and then
But its so brief and really just amounts to “we lost someone”
Finally someone says it. I fell out of love of it after the total disappointment that was the Orion Pax trilogy.
My favorite transformers character ironically is bay prime
Why's that?
@@PerspectiveEndbecause his design and he’s simply badass
The only Autobot I unironically like a little bit is Smokescreen. He's annoying, which is his whole point at first, but learns to be a little more serious due to failure after failure on his part, and when coming face to face with becoming a Prime out of complete desperation from Optimus, he turns it down because he knows that it would not only be wrong to everyone else, but to himself too. It's one of the FEW characters out of a Transformers show which is somewhat interesting to watch VERY SLOWLY evolve.
Yeah, he rules, not because he's so perfect, but because he actually grows and has character.
Finally someone that agrees with me most people see prime as something that came from heaven but in reality the show has problems
This seems to be something a lot of people wanted to hear, going by the comments.
It was a good show but, as many others, is flawed in certain aspects
@@alejandroelluxray5298 i would say that it was decent
Sad fact: transformers prime is the reason why animated season 4 was canceled. Cause at the time, Hasbro saw that the first bayformers film was doing better then animated so they wanted to make a show that felt more like the bayverse so they decided to canceled animated and replaced it with transformers prime.
Indeed, and it was an unworthy sacrifice.
why does one creation have to come at the cost of another 😔
Congrats on 15k, I’d be curious to hear your take on Animated in this style of video format
I love the show, but i agree it has it problems
And im also learning 3D, and while there is a lot of great animation moments and fights, sometimes it looks so bland and just bad it hurts to see
I really think they lacked a story border and a keyframe animator. It's all competently made, but it lacks a vision.
We might not all agree on everything but we can all agree we love transformers
Apparentely we can't cuz most people here only like to shit on stuff
Like damn why does everyone just _has_ to be so salty about anything that came after 2007
Can't enjoy shit here
Thank you man, I finally watched Prime after hearing all the hype and my god it was painful sitting through it
How was it painful to sit through, in my opinion, its one of the greatest Transformers iterations to date really
@@adamtorske9236I think it’s a matter of opinion in part. I grew up with TFP and rewatched it recently, and don’t feel a strong urge to rewatch it anytime soon. On the other hand, I rewatch TFA pretty regularly. Not necessarily saying one is better than the other (I know a lot of people who feel the opposite way in terms of rewatching), just what you would rather indulge in.

6:12 I remember SmokeScreen and Jack laughing when they put burgers a over Vince's Car. Starscream laughed at a monkey gif lol. And I think Bumblebee laughed when Arcee commented on Bulkheads "backside".
I like to imagine that the vehicons who "die" actually don't and just get back up when the autobots leave,
Transfomers Prime's level of quality is best discribed as "it's as good as Beast Machines provided you watched that before watching Beast Wars."
Transformers Prime is essentially if you mixed Transfomers Animated with the live-action Bayverse movies and didn't use all the pieces.
And that’s why EarthSpark and cyberverse Optimus we’re refreshing except for the Netflix trilogy they didn’t know what to do with his character
Exactly, it's nice to see an Optimus with a Personality. Even if it's the Same actor as the Netflix one.
You mirror my feelings pretty much exactly. That's how I'd rate those shows, and yeah I too struggle to get through prime.
I think this Optimus just tries to show as little emotion as possible, so his crew always knows they have a steady calm leader to turn to
You can do that, and not come across emotionless.

Yo what’s your logo based on? Also what’s your favorite Godzilla film? And are you going to see minus one
The answer to your first question: ua-cam.com/video/DVwPOJ96U64/v-deo.html

And probably yes.

Animated Sentinel is not MEANT to be liked. He's meant to be an uptight douche that you want to see get what's coming to him. You are SUPPOSED to not like him. Precisely. Death is really only used to avoid putting in work.
To be 100% fair, Breakdown's and I think Dreadwing's VAs left the show, that's why the characters were killed off. Mind you, I don't see why they couldn't just...you know, recast them? Like, it's not even just Prime, why is this constantly done with TV shows and ongoing series in general?

I would tend to agree to all of these points.
I personally am an animated guy. I really don't like what they did to bulkhead. I found it boring to get through. I hate that we're I go in the Fandom people treat it like it is the best transformers show.
Yeah it's not the Gold Standard, it's just mid.
I give Prime only 3 positives :
1: got me back unto Transformers, as i hasn't been since i was a teenager.
2: Knockout.
3: Predaking. I LOVE that Predaking, and it's purely my love for draconic characters in fiction. I doubt he was done well, but i can't be un-biased.
this changed my view on tfp, you are totally right.
To be clear, you can still love it, even if it has all these problems. You don't have to hate a bad thing, and if it speaks to you then it speaks to you.
