You're probably very familiar with two-letter country codes like UK, GB, DE, RU, AU, TR, etc. but how exactly were these things created, and why? And what effects can these almost randomly assigned codes have on some nations in the modern world?

Why put the UK in the title despite not talking about it? I wanted to know when to use GB and when to use UK.
BoraCM 39 GB is a geographical term to represent the parts on the island of Great Britain which include England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom includes the entire GB plus Northern Ireland
Bricks Burger I know. I was talking about online.
GB is the official ISO code for United Kingdom as a whole, and UK is a reserved ISO code so it doesn't get used on another country like Ukraine (like how Ukrainian language has 'uk').
While there's a difference between UK and GB as abbreviations; GB is the official code for UK in ISO 3166.

I'm not sure most works find the story interesting. The UK has an organisation called JANET, which is a network connecting various academic institutions together. It ran something called JANET NRS, which resembled DNS, but the order of the labels in names was the other way around, and didn't use ISO country codes. Over time, JANET became interoperable with the wider internet, and one of the things done was to grandfather .uk as a TLD so people's email addresses would stay the same, albeit reversed. By the '90s, NRS was pretty much dead, and JANET had become fully interoperable with the rest of the internet.

For the record, European license plates don't use the ISO system, they refuse to change and stick to their own clumsy system with sometimes one letter, sometimes two and sometimes three letters, for example we have S, Finland has FI and Estonia EST.
It's a different codes en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_vehicle_registration_code
You know what bothers me? That EU plates instead of these two-letter codes use one, two, and three letter variants! Why? it's so inconsistent.
Its not only EU plates, the international vehicle registration code is older than the ISO standard and has 1 to 4 letters (at least the ones i found), some of them are now used for 110 years. And the best thing is, some Nations use more than one, none or don't have official ones ... . And on the topic, Aircraft Numbers are also older than the ISO code and have 1 to 4 alphanumeric symbols, - and sometimes national emblems. Again with some Nations having more than one. There are a lot more systems to represent countries e.g. for telecommunication, weather data or sports
@@albsi7630 got it, thank you.

Licence plates don't use two letter iso codes. They use the International vehicle registration code with abbreviations between 1 and 3 letters long.
It's a different codes en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_vehicle_registration_code
Not to also forget the Scandinavian, mostly Swedish, sites using Niue's TLD for some of their websites. Swedish websites used .nu more than .se because of the strict policy for .nu. I even had a .nu address, and I'm from Norway.
Another great example of a domain hack is .tk, which is the TLD for Tokelau. That was the most used TLD in 2016, mostly because it allowed for people who had addresses like www.angelfire.com/fa/Fairhill to get their own fairhill.tk address instead, and for free. I remember having lots of .tk-addresses back in the late 90s and early 2000s before I had the money to register .no domains.

@@yangkong7935 @Yang Kong Atlantis is missunderstood meme according to OSP. so no, I didn't believe them. Well, "Sealand" isn't a recognized separate entity. Yep, I chuckled a little long ago when I found out. But, apparently ICANN has been trying to face out .su because the Soviet Union no longer exists, but it wouldn't be the first time a country top-level domain doesn't match ISO code standards, but its different because it kinda operates as the domain for ex-Soviet republics, which is something ICANN doesn't seem to like.
