This story has been on my mind for years since it happened when I was 10 years old. I was around the same age of those two boys and I felt a part of my childhood died that day of the explosion. I lived down the road from what Fritz referred to as "the mountain" as quoted in the book 'Bitter Blood' by Jerry Bledsoe. The mountain was the land/farm that Fritz's father (Dr. Klenner) owned where Fritz would set off dynamite and made caves. It would feel like an earthquake around the area. This was on Chumney Loop Rd. outside of Eden, NC and the land has a few houses on it now but is still very rural. Most documentaries don't speak of that area but that's where Fritz was headed that day of the police chase and explosion.
If you never read the 'Bitter Blood' book (the movie does not do it justice) then you are missing out on a lot more interesting information surrounding this bizarre story. Especially the things involving the aftermath of it all of Kentucky detective, Lt. Dan Davidson's further investigation of Suzie's involvement and an insightful psychological take on Fritz in the epilogue.

RIP to all those who died because of the twisted mind-set of two evil people, especially the two boys and including the wee dogs. My deepest condolences to their loved ones, especially the dad of the boys. He was spot on when he said his ex-wife was possessive over them. Being like that is not true love. Being like that means you consider your children to be no more than possessions. This also applies to romantic love.

I lived in the apartment building behind Susie and Fritz in Greensboro in the mid-80s. Funnily, the apartments were called "Friendly Hills" and I never knew anyone who could be that UNfriendly. The kids were really great kids, especially the younger one who was really chill and polite (I can never remember which one was Jim and which one was John, though) After the big showdown north of town, my brothers and I would saunter up to Highway 150 to see the marks in the road where the explosion took place. Kind of a macabre sightseeing trip. There was a TV-movie made about this, with Keith Carradine, Harry Hamlin and Kelly McGillis. Hamlin made for a very sexy version of Fritz, who though odd was very handsome and well-built already, and had a brooding-backwoodsman-loner kind of charisma. I could see how Susie fell for him, even though they were first cousins. Kelly McGillis was believable as snooty Susie who knew everything about everything and seemed to think having a famous aunt made her royalty down here, but Keith Carradine didn't remind me at all of Tom Lynch. Maybe it was the lack of beard.

We used to ride our ponies by their house and they'd fuss at us to walk on the other side of the street, but there is only so much room to try and stay away from the cars on a narrow road-narrower back then. I can’t help but think that it’s very wise to keep your feelings to yourself if you dislike your daughter in law. And make every effort to get along with her, at the very least you’ll be able to keep a relationship with your grand children intact, even if the parents separate. If it was my son I would have strongly advised him to give custody to the mother. And have visitation rights. They will eventually make up their own minds who they want to spend time with.

    • @scarlettbutler2873

Tom did give Susie full custody of the boys. He was only trying to get more visitation time as his time with the boys was paltry at best and Susie fought those with a vengeance. He was also very concerned about the boys physical and mental states after his last visit with them which was only a month before the deaths.

If you want a good case to do in South Carolina, the case of Nathan Dickson of South Carolina. A very little known crime yet it was a huge crime.

I agree with others who are calling out the folks who post these stories and yet they play havoc with TRUTH, and DESCRIPTION of the FACTS. WORDS MATTER AND I WISH those who report these stories, would learn the proper verbiage that makes the whole DESPICABLE CRIME like this one, as just another ho/hum day. NOOOOO THESE POOR WOMEN WHERE SLAUGHTERED LIKE THEY WERE ON A BATTLEFIELD during WWII, Or frankly ANY HARD FOUGHT BATTLE.

There was a movie made about this back in the 80s. I never heard of the story, but I remember the movie.
It would be interesting to know exactly why Susie divorced her husband, and did not want to share custody the dynamics from friends and family woul make this even mmore interesting because she sounded mentally ill. You can be functional, but mentally ill.
Listen to your parents because the mother did not like her
