This story has been on my mind for years since it happened when I was 10 years old. I was around the same age of those two boys and I felt a part of my childhood died that day of the explosion. I lived down the road from what Fritz referred to as "the mountain" as quoted in the book 'Bitter Blood' by Jerry Bledsoe. The mountain was the land/farm that Fritz's father (Dr. Klenner) owned where Fritz would set off dynamite and made caves. It would feel like an earthquake around the area. This was on Chumney Loop Rd. outside of Eden, NC and the land has a few houses on it now but is still very rural. Most documentaries don't speak of that area but that's where Fritz was headed that day of the police chase and explosion. If you never read the 'Bitter Blood' book (the movie does not do it justice) then you are missing out on a lot more interesting information surrounding this bizarre story. Especially the things involving the aftermath of it all of Kentucky detective, Lt. Dan Davidson's further investigation of Suzie's involvement and an insightful psychological take on Fritz in the epilogue.
I read the book many years ago. it was one that stayed on my mind as well for some reason. I never dreamed I would be living in Louisville in Oldham County. i. I think I was a bit haunted because of the way they had blown up the SUV and how the boys were killed before the explosion
RIP to all those who died because of the twisted mind-set of two evil people, especially the two boys and including the wee dogs. I lived in the apartment building behind Susie and Fritz in Greensboro in the mid-80s. Funnily, the apartments were called "Friendly Hills" and I never knew anyone who could be that UNfriendly. The kids were really great kids, especially the younger one who was really chill and polite (I can never remember which one was Jim and which one was John, though) After the big showdown north of town, my brothers and I would saunter up to Highway 150 to see the marks in the road where the explosion took place. Hamlin made for a very sexy version of Fritz, who though odd was very handsome and well-built already, and had a brooding-backwoodsman-loner kind of charisma.
