  • Arriving in China more than thirty years ago with nothing more than an interest in Chinese culture and philosophy, David Moser ended up witnessing China's monumental evolution from a country just discovering Coca Cola to a wealthy, worldly, and confident nation. His experiences in China inspired his enthusiasm for cultural exchange, the importance of curiosity, and the necessity of dialogue to grow greater understanding of the country he calls home.

    When you learn the Chinese language, you learn Chinese vocabulary, expressions, and concepts, which come from their classics. In this way, you will naturally learn Chinese culture, values, wisdom and the Chinese way of thinking. This UA-cam video presents the heart felt and truly sincere views of an academic, with deep love and appreciation of the Chinese culture and language of over 38 years of immersion inside China, wishing more of his fellow Americans would become more acquainted and familiar with China. Unfortunately the mainstream media follows the predominantly official US government view of China as a threat and have been constructing walls and obstacles along the paths of communicating and understanding between the American and Chinese people. I wonder how many Americans will actually see this UA-cam video. Perhaps China's recent 144 hours visiting China without needing a visa would actually generate more interest from the western countries of visiting China and becoming more interested in China once they realize that how far astray they have been led to believe about China by the mainstream media. Thanks for sharing this video and best wishes to Mr David Moser.

    @dancerinmaya6813 Місяць тому +43

    The observation he shared regarding China has a completely different paradigm of and set of value relating to human/society/governance/etc. is very important, most Western countries are not aware that there are different possibilities of mankind, but addicted to a zero-sum game.
    Two comments: 1. when you praise/compliment a Chinese, he/she says nonononono, I am this or that not good, this is not sense of inferiority, but modesty required by Chinese culture;
    2. CN gov never presents to the world that CN has only one voice/thought, diversity and differences between regions/ethnicities culturally, economically and politically are always acknowledged. There is great tolerance in China towards diversities (co-existing with the fact that it is an almost homogenous society w/ 92+% Han--the tolerance might be due to the long term co-existence and co-mingling of different races/origins/regions, the basic bottom line is you can do whatever, so long as you don't bother others.)
    The Western MSMs/thinktanks try very hard to depict China as a country having no freedom, particularly, no freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc., which are myths. If you go to any Chinese social media or wechat group, you'll see the diverse political views, criticism, insults of or even attacks on CN gov, views different from the official stances, but they won't be bothered at all unless certain redlines are crossed, typically relating to stability/social unrest/etc.
    Religions are freely practiced but they are not allowed to be used to organize crimes/incite social unrest or being used to interfere with Chinese internal affairs by external forces, religious groups are required to register according to law, also you are not allowed to preach to/convert minors (terrorist attacks in China in the past 30 years were always associated with people funded/directed by external forces), all adults can practice their religions openly/freely/lawfully.
    David's suggestion is valuable, i.e., have more ppl go over to get to know China (even from your treating China as a threat perspective)--if you know China well, you'd understand Chinese are inner focused, they don't like to expand territories to take on others' problems, they don't like wars let alone starting wars. So the Western accusations of China becoming a hegemon/trying to dominate etc. are pretty much BS. Chinese like to be left in peace, work hard and make money...
    Also the allegation that Chinese don't have values is false. If there is any value that is universal, this should be it: "don't do unto others what you don't want done to you" --all the rest is imposition of one group's value upon others.
    May there be understanding, mutual respect, equality, integrity of sovereignty and peaceful co-existence, may there be common development and common wealth for the mankind.

      Who can play spot the bullshit? In this well written and seemingly reasonable post, the writer slides in a steaming pile, i.e. (para. 6 line 4) "China doesn't like to expand territory" Tibet, Vietnam, India, South China Sea, Taiwan, etc. (essentially most its neighbors) may have something to say about this. Furthermore, the mass push to build a military capable of taking Taiwan by force by 2027, Xi's words, not mine, show continued violent intent akin to Russia's attack on Ukraine.
      This post is an excellent example of the increased sophistication of the CCP narrative using the "two truths, one lie" method. I used to play this game with my Chinese students who were generally amazing wonderful people I'd like to add. My beef is with the CCP not the good ppl of China.

They only have to talk to another Chinese from a different region and be reminded, if they needed to be reminded, that even the Chinese language is highly diverse.
    So don't know whers you got the idea that the CPC had tried to present a homogeneous culture. Yes, it did push unity, but unity in diversity. It is not just the Chinese who have a civilisational concept of unity amongst their peoples. The ancient Indian and Chinese civilisations were deeply interconnected and much of the Indian Vedic works were preserved in written form by the Chinese. Confucianism was born in China from these extensive interactions. A lot of this material was lost in India from successive invasions from the Turks, Afghans, English, Portuguese, Dutch and French who came to plunder and conquer. The loss of Nalanda University in India, for example, was incalculable to human civilization. But China was able to recover later from the devastation of the odium trade. India’s recovery has been a lot slower.

      @serriajohn Nature does not care about efficiency. Nature cares only about survival. Photosynthesis in plants is only 4% efficient. However, plant can remain efficient at a relatively wide range of temperatures which is how they ensure survival, I.E: they sacrifice efficiency for survival.
      Meanwhile, we seem to forget that we live on a finite planet with finite resources. That being the case, increasing efficiency inevitably leads to a faster depletion of resources which inevitably leads to a decreased ability to survive. What will efficient AI robots produce once most resources have been efficiently exhausted?

    • @Samsara_is_dukkha
      @Samsara_is_dukkha Місяць тому +1

      @serriajohn Birth control exists since the 1960s from which time the human population doubled. So good luck with that.
      I am not sure what you are arguing about anymore. The purpose of industrialisation, including AI and computers, has always been to eliminate humans -- that are invariably unable to work as hard as machines, prone to making mistakes, generally unreliable due to sickness, regularly complain and require paying -- in order to maximise efficiency and profit. But as already pointed out, nature does not select for efficiency but for survival. In other words, human efficiency will be eventually eliminated by nature because it threatens survival. If you think humans are stronger and consequently can escape the laws of nature, you are deluded.
      There is no such thing as unlimited energy and resources on a finite planet. Meanwhile, AI and robots are unconscious machines and, as such, do not give a damn if they survive or not. We do.

Since then, the human population slowly increased to reach 2 billion people by the 19th century. It is only when we started using fossil fuels to power millions of machines that the human population skyrocketed to over 8 billion in just over a century: an unprecedented growth of any species ever seen on planet Earth in such a short time. Meanwhile, conflicts, wars and widespread pollution have increased exponentially to a point where every ecosystem is impacted some of them to the point of total extinction.
      Every civilisation has collapsed at some point either due to climatic changes, to conquest or to decadence. Industrial civilisation will be no exception and will probably be the most short-lived of all due to its extreme lack of resilience and the rapid depletion of vital resources resulting from unprecedented levels of mindless consumption. Meanwhile, a single deadly virus can bring the whole construct down in only a few months and there is nothing we can do about it. The recent Covid pandemic provides a blatant proof of that as it brought most countries to a grinding halt... and the virus is not particularly deadly.

    A secular, humanistic, and rational society is essential for understanding Chinese culture, which, according to recorded history, dates back over 2,000 years to the time of Confucius at the latest. In contrast, Western societies today still remain predominantly semi-secular and semi-religious, despite advancements in science and technology and the so-called Enlightenment of the 16th century, which occurred less than 700 years ago.

      They have a different culture. The chinese pretty much lived under an authoritarian figure all the thousands of years in their civilization, it is all they know and want. The chinese believe that as long as that authoritarian figure protects them, and allows them to live a life that is safe and have the oppurtunity to have a family, home and earn their living, they will support that authoritarian figure, they are willing exchange some individual freedom for them.
      They are a communal society and community and nation trumps individual needs. You are using your prism to judge them, why don't you just allow them to be themselves, as they allow you to be yourselves without judgement?

    Things like sitting on the floor and keeping your legs on the table are common place in America but considered poor and offensive respectively in India.

Second, your voting on first past the post doesn’t take into consideration those who voted against and those who didn’t vote at all when the sum of these two is greater than first past the post. Unless you changed the form pf governance to suit all voices of the people, your dork of democracy is a joke. Thirdly, what are the KPI to measure what your politicians promised during every election? It’s all rhetoric and most times people are sold a lemon. The bottom 50% of Americans are still stucked in time with more joining their ranks. The world doesn’t need an abusive and self appointed police kneeling on our throats, you can keep this practice in America.
