Bobbi Althoff: The Really Bad Podcast

  • Bobbi Althoff is one of the worst interviewers I have ever come across.
    But what surprises me the most is how she is somehow still relevant despite her poor skills in asking questions and why she has somehow been granted access to some of the biggest celebrities in the world.
    And I get it. Her interview style is quote-unquote meant to be intentionally awkward and non-chalet, and if that’s your cup of tea, then that’s fine. But for those who argue it is in the same vein as other shows like Between Two Ferns with Zac Galafankais, there is a huge contrast between being just awkward and playing a character that satirically lampoons both the guests and themselves.
    Moreover, this whole style of awkwardness, in my view, is completely different to what Zac Gakaflinakis does, who clearly puts on a show for a channel produced by a company called Laugh or Die. This means that those who come to be interviewed are really not there for an interview but are more so allowing themselves to play a certain character that is willing to be laughed at or poked fun at by Zac himself.
    Here, this awkwardness is a jest at the other person’s career or personality, but the role of playing a character also goes to Zac himself, who isn’t afraid to make fun of himself as part of the joke. It’s literally a whole skit, condensed down into bite-sized form, made purposefully to make us laugh.
    But with Bobbi Althoff, her show is clearly of the long-form type, even if you can argue that she is still playing a character like Zac. The title of her show is literally called the Really Long Podcast, and its intention isn’t to come across as one long-sized skit but rather an incredibly awkward sitdown and discussion with someone famous or successful.
    This is where such awkwardness bothers me the most because, unlike Zac, I don’t find it funny. Mainly because it’s blatantly clear that her attempts at creating humour are almost always trying to get her guests to say something particularly scandalous or weird while she’s fostering an environment where they feel awkward and uncomfortable in an effort to make them slip up.
    Thank you to my incredible Patreons for continuing to support this channel. You guys are amazing.

    Who is Bobbi Althoff?
    Bobbi Althoff (born July 31, 1997) is an American podcaster and influencer known for her viral interviews with Drake, Lil Yachty, Offset and other celebrities.
    Althoff grew up as the second youngest of six children in Southern California, where her father worked as a contractor. After graduating from high school, Althoff sought work as a nanny.
    Althoff started posting content on TikTok in 2021, with a focus on sharing her pregnancy updates. Her first TikTok, which was of her dancing with a banana, reached nearly 2 million views.
    In 2023, she created a new TikTok account on which she posts comedic videos. That February, Althoff announced she had filmed a pilot for her upcoming podcast. The podcast, named The Really Good Podcast, debuted in April 2023.
    In July 2023, Althoff interviewed rapper Drake on an episode of The Really Good Podcast. Clips from the interview went viral on TikTok. The full interview was later removed from Althoff's UA-cam channel in August, which sparked rumors of a feud.
    Other celebrities Althoff has interviewed on her podcast include Lil Yachty, Mark Cuban, Offset, Shaquille O'Neal, Rick Glassman and Bobby Lee.
    Due to her rapid rise to fame, including interviewing Drake on just the second episode of her podcast, she has been accused of being an industry plant.
    Alex Abad-Santos of Vox described Althoff's style as "unfazed, dry, bored in an ironic way". He wrote, "She asks her interview subjects what they wear, how they live, and what they like to eat, but doesn't seem that interested in what they have to say. She meets most of them with deadpan sarcasm and silence, making her guests live in the discomfort of whatever they just revealed."
    Althoff's podcast has been compared to Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis and Chicken Shop Date, which also put their guests in awkward positions. She has been accused of copying the style of such hosts as Funny Marco and Ziwe Fumudoh.
    Bobbi married Cory Althoff, a programmer who works as a senior vice president at CompTIA, in January 2020. She met Cory on Bumble.
    And if you’re still reading this - hello.

    I know its not helpful to say but I literally just avoid entertainment that even appears to be propped up. I don't just mean regular promotion but rather apparent manipulation to give platforms to those who in a regular world would have no business being in the limelight. It's super transparent when horrible interviewers are inundated with quadruple A talent that in no way care about this person or her stupid channels but the hits just keep on coming.

    I don't like her either beacuse her character actually reminds me of Miranda Sings. Miranda used to be very popular among teens in the heyday of youtube; now Colleen that invented the Miranda character has been canceled so someone like Bobbi emerged. Miranda was like a somewhat mentally challenged little girl and Bobbi is kind of alike. Basically her show is supposed to be funny because an adult woman that acts like a child or autistic person interviews celebrities. And we've already seen this shtick, abeit done more exteremely, by now universally disliked Colleen Ballinger aka Miranda Sings

    Oh that's true.. these interviews aren't really giving us any information nor do they hit the nail on the head for what qualifies as an interview. It's just her being awkward with guest on camera, and that in turn makes her "famous".
    With that being said, if she isn't claiming it's an "interview" then it's all good, she's on her grind. But she certainly couldn't say such. It'd be a slap to the faces of actual journalists.

  • @Yanglock
    @Yanglock 3 місяці тому +2

    I think the style of comedy she promotes is brilliant. It's another level of irony above what most people are used to, and I think her "interviews" are just a vehicle for that. It's like if Larry David was really like his Curb persona. It's like if Nathan for You happened in front of you without any cameras. It's stripped away a layer of comfort and separation most people take for granted. Sure, you could interview well, but what if you interviewed like a sociopath? What if you presented as truth, to every guest, that you really are that awkward and combative, and see where that leads?

    • @anuph.3806

      bro it's so cringe and its not even that original, these types of interviews have been done before, between two ferns etc, its just, she doesn't really pull it off, cus u need to have a comedic sense and she was a mom vlogger before and then her husband, who has industry connections got her this show and its just not working.

    • @Yanglock
      @Yanglock 3 місяці тому

      @@anuph.3806 I'd argue it's on a whole other level than Between Two Ferns because of how subversive it is. The people on B2F are aware it's all a bit, and they go along with it. This is almost closer to the Eric Andre show, just more toned down and, as a result, more believable.

To compare her to big, obvious interviews where the guest is treated safely and kindly is to misunderstand the character she's putting forward. It really is more similar to The Office, just in real life.
