  • I had the opportunity to go strip the remaining parts from the 200Tdi Disco1, returning with a car full of mucky smelly components for Clanger. Installed the Steering Box, drop arms, and connecting shafts (various). Then it was time to tackle the radiator and Intercooler modifications to fit in the small Series Engine Bay.

I'm really enjoying seeing your progress. I'm no TIG expert but the discoloration of the electrode suggests that the gas flow is too low. On my flow meter the 5 l/min suggested for a number 5 cup isn't sufficient to stop the electrode from oxidising. I use about 8 l/min and the electrode says shiny.

more likely my dipping it ! I found the gas lens had disoldged within the cup head, so what flow there was was being restricted - eventually it packed up and the electrode , etc just dropped to bits ! Rather alarming at the time. I was so focussed on the puddle .. or lack there of I hadnt noticed the build up of 'splutter'. After that my nerves were shot and the 'dipping' took centre stage :-) I also am trying to break teh habbit of pulling the torch away at the end of the run before the gas stops - so the electrode gets exposed. So many things to try and remember ! Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best Mat

The crooked steering wheel is to remind you that it is just after all an old land rover. LOL

It's best not to penetrate on a corner to corner stainless weld. It will just "sugar" the back which is undesirable. Unless of course you have gas coverage at the back. Or clamp some Ali or copper at the back to prevent oxygen getting to it.
Ali...... Too much cleaning action (balance) can destroy the tungsten etc. Because the current is flowing more .. from work piece to torch. Simplified explanation.

There's "Stack of dimes " welds and "Stack of shit" welds. Strong enough doesn't have to be pretty.

I will be honest, at this stage, if its sticks its good ! That intercooler was a swine, oil soaked cast ali' all manner of problems with the welder operator and really basic laack of knowledge & skill :-) Be a miracle if it holds air tight under pressure. Still looks as good as those Ive seen done 'professionally' for £85+tax shipping etc. Will see how she 'blows' soon enough. Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best Mat.
