  • The main reason I do videos like this are to raise awareness of what farmers do, and maybe a little insight of. We make up less than 2% yet feed everyone.
This video is of aerial spraying of fungicide. Did you know that when we spray our crops for weeds on the farm with our ground driven sprayer we put 10-15 GPA, or gallons per acre on? When Ariel application of fungicide is done, they only use 2 gallons per acre (GPA). Helicopters can get into tighter places, such as tree lines around a field, but airplanes also can be used to apply fungicide.
Fungicide help a plant protect themselves from several potentially yield roping disease. We are in a critical time in a corn plants life, tasseling and pollination. Basically, the ears on a corn plant are filling. For each kernel there is a silk that is pollinated. Hopefully, we get good kernel fill and fill out the whole length of the ear. The diameter of the ear was determined much earlier.
Also, fungicide helps a plant with all around good plant health. If you think you might leave your corn out in the field longer plant health helps with stand ability! Some varieties of corn respond better to fungicide better than others. Lastly, we (Tuttle Farms) spray our corn after corn acres. Anytime you plant corn more than one year in a row you open a window for disease.
