Was lucky enough to see him right after he left the Drive-by Truckers. It was a small bar in Philly. The cover charge was $5!! We stood RIGHT in front of the stage. Will never forget that. Have seen him a bunch of times since then. He is an amazing human and a brilliant performer.
This was the song that got me to listen to another Jason Isbell song, buy an album, then another . . . I don't do that kind of killing work anymore, but Something More Than Free broke me out of my shell a little bit and let me really feel how much I admire my dad, who gave enormous chunks of his life and his health to a corporation with a factory where his father and his brother worked, then found new ways to make a living and keep contributing to his family when the company abandoned the factory and moved out of town. Honestly, I kinda miss The 400 Unit on this version, but if I had to give a speech on get-out-the-vote efforts, I guess I wouldn't want to follow the full band tearing the place down, either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I used to work in staffing for low to no skill temp labor and would listen to this on my way to hiring events to remind me of the people I was helping in my job, and why I cared. Thanks for sharing your story.
@@BC08 Listen, I love Stapleton and Childers. I haven't heard of Richie Kotzen, I'll have to check him out. But they are absolutely NOT on the level of Isbell. The only people I know of who I would say are even CLOSE to him are Evan Felker and Julien Baker.
@@loganfisher3431 Define level. Isbell’s vocals are nothing compared to Stapleton’s. Nowhere close, levels apart Isbell’s guitar work is mid. Far from a virtuoso Isbell’s songs are not musically complex. Basic 4/4 stuff with standard structure and simplistic melody What is it about Isbell that justifies such a lofty rating from you? The presentation? The lyrics? The performance we’re commenting under isn’t even good
lol. Outside, people supporting your socialist party are calling for the destruction of Israel. People like you are beyond hypocrites. You’re truly lost…. 😢
It makes me so happy that Jason was willing to play the DNC. He has been through more than a lot in his life, and certainly he'll lose fans for this, but I hope he knows how important it is to hear his voice in this setting.
Seen him at The Ryman in Nashville last year. Long time fan from Kansas reporting in here. Dream concert would be Jason Isbell + Strugill Simpson + Tyler Childers. I'd pay a ton to see that one!
Jason Isbell, you are a class act! I've seen you twice in concert and I have all your (fantastic) CDs. Thank you for shaking up the DNC and, by default, the whole wide world. I can't wait to see you in concert again--the sooner, the better. ❤🎉😊
So grateful that one of the great musicians of our time also has a heart the size of the planet. Singing for everyone.

One of the greatest songwriters of our time! Love this man and his music.
Representing the good, compassionate people of Alabama, Thanks for making us proud, Jason.
Agreed!
Jason (and Patterson Hood) were the 2 people that taught me Alabama isn't just a bunch of racists. Two amazing and talented guys.
Representing the delusional, anti-American, anti-freedom loving people of Alabama

As far as I am concerned, Jason is one of Alabama’s and America’s best people. And… a great artist to boot!
If there's a better songwriter going right now, I haven't heard of them.
Such a joy to see you on the DNC stage, Jason! Thank you!!
Added a fan in Tennessee, great to see a musician standing up for our freedom. Thanks
Welcome to the hive rabbit hole that is Jason's catalogue. He's the best. I don't even like country, but love his music.
@@grilledspaghettisame, I’m not a country fan, but there is something special about Jason. He doesn’t call himself country, he calls it, “sad rock”
The DNC doesn’t represent freedom
😂😂😂 really?
There’s no “freedom” in the communism people like Jason Idiotbell push. President Trump is your daddy!!
when this song came out, i was choked up, so thankful that I could provide for my family.
One of the greatest songwriters of a generation.
Thank the Universe for this fella.
So great to see one of my favorite artists on stage at the DNC!

Perfect song for the DNC. Jason’s music reminds me of the things I can and do still love about this country.
Was hoping for Hope the High Road but this works too.
fox news would've had a meltdown ahhaha. that's such a good idea, but I think this message fits the "joy" theme
@@JohnProut88 I think Hope fits the theme even better, but I understand why they picked this one.
Jason is the man. Appreciate what he has to say.

Isbell is why we can't judge folks by where they come from ... Go 'Bama.
Can confirm!
