AMERICA is the continent which is correct for history and geography.
Amerigo Vespucci the Italian navigator at the service of Spain, (the first to recognize the existence of a new world). I NEVER explore North America.
And Brazil was the first region of planet Earth to legitimately receive the name of AMERICA, in 1507 by European cartographers officially.
(The documents are official).
Therefore a country called the United States has nothing to do with the name AMERICA.
Taking / Misappropriating the name of the continent cannot change history as they (the North Americans) did in 1776.
The real story is: America has been the continent (just the continent) and the region of Brazil since 1507, is the first AMERICA.
AMERICA is the continent This is only taught in a relatively small portion of the world. A majority of the world believes/learned something different (and I am not talking about the U.S.). Ironically, Latin Americans want their opinion pushed onto the entire world, yet call the U.S. the arrogant ones.

Amerigo Vespucci was not the first to recognize the existence of a "new world". Millions of people already lived here and they did not call it America. The real question should be if Indigenous people had one word for the whole continent prior to 1492. I am guessing the answer is absolutley not.
How is it that you've determined that Brazil was the first to "legitimately" receive the name America? By "legitimate" do you mean "agrees with me"?

Yes, America is the continent. Unfortunately it were the founders of the United States of America who trademarked the name, and now it is the only country on that continent to bear the word in its name. Later they set out to conquer the world by cultural appropriation (something that is now considered a bad thing but has been the business model of the USA since at least 100 years). The habit of the Spanish-speaking world to call someone from the USA an "estadounidense" ("united statser") is just more confusing as there is also a Spanish-speaking country located on the continent, the Estados Unidos Mexicanos ("United States of Mexico"). Hence, it is the most simple to an "American" to be a person from the USA, and all people who come from another country on that continent are precisely named after their respective country.

America really is just a continent, North America and South America, alone are two divisions of a continent.
As for example: Western Europe, and Eastern Europe, are divisions, of Europe, a continent.
I do not understand why the Anglo-Saxons want to make believe this, good luckily in other languages, America appears as a single continent.
For Europeans (Except Anglo-Saxons) America is a single continent, not a country.
In French it is l 'Amerique, in German it is Amerika, that is to say only the Anglo-Saxons against the speakers of all the other western languages (That we are very many more).
In no official document of the United States does America appear, to refer to your country.
It needs to all be reclassified. Two continents. One America (the US).

"American" can mean someone from U.S. or someone from North or South America. There are thousands of homonyms in many languages. Also --- much of the rest of the world outside of the U.S. do not consider it one continent.

Canadians vehemently refused to be associated with being called "Americans" because Americans are what their neighbors are referred to. It doesn't matter how much someone is arguing here about what the term "should" refer to. It only matters what it actually is used to refer to. You go to any English speaking country in the entire continent/s, and Americans refer to citizens of the country, not continent, the United States of America only. I'm not trying to be a prescriptivist here. This is how the term is used and understood in the English speaking world, not just the U.S. or Canada. Many other countries including Japan where I now live, people simply refer to those who are from the U.S.A. as "Americans." They don't refer to Canadians, Mexicans, Chileans, or any other country as Americans.
Most of the world refers to citizens of the U.S.A. as Americans. Canadians MAY accept being called North Americans, but only if the "North" is there, because North America is the continent that Canada is in. In that way, your example of Italians being Europeans is a closer fit as Italians are one group of people belonging to the larger group of members of the European continent.
If you don't believe me, look it up. Ask Canadians if they mind being called Americans. Every answer is that it is considered insulting to them because it refers to the country below them. And it takes a lot to absolutely insult the usually very friendly Canadian population.

There are different distinctions made in different places. The "number of continents" is a political decision. There is no science behind it. The science tells you how many continental plates there are and it is WAY more than the number of continents recognized by any culture.
