I know this was several years ago, but just had to comment as a swiftwater recue certified guide who has done this river a few times: Rapid deployment and accurate placement of that rope bag could have easily saved this boat from a flip. Why have rope bags if you are incapable of rapid deployment? Before each trip you should give your bag several throws and practice rapid deployment. Don't clip it and forget it until there's an emergency. The guide and his passenger did not have paddles!! In this situation it will take two paddlers digging and working together to get the boat over the eddy fence. Draw strokes in combination with the boat getting shoved out to the eddy fence (it happened a couple times) where the opportunity to break free occurs. Poor skills and lack of training here. No helmets either. Have you ever been blasted in the head with a flailing oar handle? It will kill you.
Thank you, Michael. I do not have your level of experience, but I do have some. I use an expedition canoe,, even more prone to similar. I agree with everything you say. To add,, the guy with the camera,, good footage,, but at some point everyone needs to involve in the rescue, not just watch.
And the Oarsman had his oars out of the water as they entered the hole. Should have had his oars in the water and punched with everything he had. Probably would have made it through. No flip line to boot.
This guy talking during nearly the entire video actually told the other guy to be quite for the video. Really??? Did he possibly hear how completely annoying he was?
I was the guy in the grey boat with the yellow rain jacket on. I got this video from the guy talking and posted his video. I probably saved the life of the passenger by staying below the rapid and picking him up when they flipped. He probably couldn't have made it to shore by himself. Hr really was tired and had 3 broken ribs. If i was up there trying to throw a rope to them ( which I knew wasn't possible from the left bank) I wouldn't have been in the right spot to rescue him. I knew they were either going to pop out of the backwash or flip over. It was a simple rescue once they flipped. The only time it would have been life threatening is if nobody was below them patiently waiting. There was another significant rapid about 1/2 mile downstream. The guys on the left saved the other boater with a throw rope.
Wow! Thanks for posting this and rescuing the swimmer! Saved the dude's live! An great example of how important down stream safety is. If the immediate situation isn't life threatening a long exhausting swim will be. I joined a commercial trip on the Skykomish River When a Freshly fallen deciduous tree fell across the main channel and a commercial raft got caught up. All boats except one went to prevent any chance of strainer entrapment yet just around the corner was a huge log that just recently blocked half the channel just around the corner. In this situation way more boats were needed down stream if the the stuck boat dumped all its occupants. 0:10 - ua-cam.com/video/DtzYEbCc6kM/v-deo.html

Better still, both jump over the side and 'sea anchor' it - the back should swing out and then you will be in a strong downstream current enough to pull it out. Hanging onto a rope in that sort of current is harder than you think.

If you ever need to throw a rope a great distance, use a paddle. Put the bag on the blade, with about 5 feet of rope pulled out and laying on it, and fling it while holding the shaft (like doing an overhead smash with a tennis racquet). You can almost double your throwing range, and with practice you are actually much more accurate.
