Rwanda plan is 'probably dead', says former Supreme Court justice

- Lord Sumption, a former Supreme Court justice, says the court had "confined themselves to looking at whether Rwanda is a safe country to send people to" and then decided "it wasn't".
He added that Rwanda is "not up to the job" of deciding refugee status, largely due to the country's record of expelling migrants to other countries.

Just a reminder, the plan is to send up to 200 asylum seekers per year to Rwanda. This will not stop a single boat. Anyone thinking of trying to cross the channel will just take the less than 1% risk of being sent to Rwanda as acceptable odds. Complete waist of British tax payers money.
15 odd years of these loony polcies. Enough is enough. We look like fools doing this.
Sasanqua’s 🤦♀️
@chrisBaxter-ly8orThe alternative is to do what we should have been doing all along. That is to set up asylum claim processing facilities in France, which the French have already agreed to.
If the Rwanda plan was so good and pure, how come the UK didn't send the all Ukraine and Russian asylum seekers there?
Exactly 😅
Because Ukrainians are genuine refugees unlike the small boat people.

Another 14M down the pan........
140m
£140000000 well spent!
They are building a retirement home at the side of the runway.😂 The Rwanda scheme isn’t dead…. It’s asleep.
Rishi didnt have any intention of sending illegals to Rwanda.
Vote of confidence needed
Vote the Tory’s out
this is what the vast majority want..........labour will never win an election cause they would act like merkel and open the gates and let them flood in.
A scam from day one , an expensive one as well
Being practical, surely the best way forward and less controversial, would be hiring more staff to process these applicants quickly again, like we did before Brexit! £140m blown on a fantasy they literally can't get "off the ground"!
Yes, the point of this isn't actually to work, it's a publicity stunt, it's just to rile people up for more votes.
Actually solving the problem? what about the culture wars?
It cant get off the ground because they dont want it too.
@@hugorebelo129 Nailed it.
It was never alive a political fig leaf of scheme that could never get passed the Courts. Cold purpose camp on Scottish Island where they cannot disappear into the black economy yes, sending them to Rwanda never a serious concept just a PR measure. Which most people did not believe in including those crossing in boats.
When this man speaks, I listen.
Eventually the only people with Human Rights will be MPs and their rich Donors. Unfortunately the same people who fell for the Brexit scam will be begging to give up their own human rights.
The lockdown scam was even worse with people covering their faces lol 😆 😒 😂 🙄
no such thing...europhiles don't like we have sovereignty
@chrisBaxter-ly8orwell only the illeducated 28% fell for it
Was it ever alive
200 refugee applicants to Rwanda. What would this actual solve? What else is behind this? Don't forget once a right is gone, its gone for everyone, not only the "enemies" of today
The Sumption Assumption
Isn’t it time he was moved on? He’s such a lousy interviewer and host. There’s plenty of excellent journalists out there capable of clearing the exceedingly low bar set by his weekly third-rate nonsense
Time to leave the ECHR and take back control of our borders.
Never happening.
indeed, contact your local MP its time we close the loopholes that allow our nation to be RAPED
A policy that might be able to cope with a few hundred people when the problem is tens of thousands big.
Nonsense all the way.
Lucky to have his view on the channel
This was never going to happen, the politicians knew it. Keep the public distracted & angry. Same with all these wars they show on TV. It's to keep our attention away from the shambles our own country is in
In regards to Rwanda, it's the old "divide and rule" tactic
Suella Deville did not come up with the idea but really , really liked it; ran with hate ball until towards end zone before being stopped.
UK government says the Earth is flat. So it's flat, OK?
All the blame falls on the stupid attitude of the so called leaders
It's not British law, how does the supreme court answer that?
The UK patriated these laws.
It never took off in the first place! 😂 I’m not sorry about the pun
As if he's on here I've read all lot of his judgement, very reasonable guy
I well remember the time when the government made new laws , with the will of the electorate, and the judges interpreted them if there were words or phrases that could have more than one meaning like the word "supply" in the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 for instance. Since 1998 the higher courts have been employed in striking down legislation that in their view does not comply with the EDHR or any other undemocratic signing to some outdated treaty or protocol. I blame the HRA 1998. As a lawyer I knew back in the day that it was the road to ruin when judges were no longer insulated from politics and social policy but were like Supreme Court Judges in the USA. Maybe we should have them appointed by the government for their political leanings as they do in the US as well? The Human Rights Act was an act of vandalism by Blair who turned us into a banana republic complete with a "Ministry of Injustice" run by politicians instead of a judge as in African dictatorships.
Big L to Rwanda, they must be fuming. Not only have they missed out on a great deal and a chance to improve international relations, they're getting mocked.
There is nothing for Rwanda in this English fraud it 21st century colonialism pure and simple and Africans are stupid for falling for the scam!
Does this guest have Parkinson?
Cause he can't stand still and its very disturbing
This is definitely The madness of the Tories
Vote for FREE PALISTAN ❤❤❤❤
Hold on is dead right ???
Probably if may be probably
And definitely maybe
No more chicken curry so full
Visit Rwanda
get all one million there ...
Words means everything with lawyers and the word probably! Is very telling 😂😂
A former supreme justice has nothing to say that we want to hear.....and if his former colleagues are of no use to us either !
Rwanda does not have the infrastructure to home so many people.
it does actually and we paid for the infrastructure too.
@@random_an0n Clean and sage trains and buses and civil service to support the refugees?
lmao they are not entitled to a 1st world infrastructre, only to not be persecuted,if by your logic then the entire 3rd world are privvy to just show up at dover
being poor is not a reason for being a refugee, they must build their own nations not steal the sweat of our brow.@@louisep5178
How come, then, Rwanda can freely advertise its country as a holiday destination? If it's not safe, how come all I see at many Premier Clubs is those ads? The Gov foreign travel web site does not say do not go to Rwanda!
Last year it did! And as of June this year it's been changed to generally safe but don't go near the borders due to risks of armed attacks😁
So all's good in the hood 😂
But that is on the government website and is the government trustworthy! I mean it's not like they haven't lied before
