Maybe it is not perfect...but how i feel what she wants to transmit!!!this is the art of the opera, she is one of the greatest singers of the past century. Brava Renata!

Only in this light aria , I seem to truly appreciate this soprano who somehow I never found exciting above others in other pieces.
Beautiful - such sensitive phrasing and expression. Take away the pressure of heavy dramatic singing required in Gioconda, Lady Macbeth and Abigaille and what you find is the real vocal marvel that is Renata Scotto revealed here in Lauretta's aria. A jewel!

She makes you forget her faults - top notes not as they once were, but she never forces. The semaphore gestures look painfully old fashioned, but she transcends all this with her musicality and phrasing. She was a great artist and sang with true emotion.
The best Liu, Suor Angelica and Madama Butterfly ever. Ms. Scotto always had the BEST and most expressive LONG lines.

Per me nessuno canta quest'aria come la Caballe',pur amando la Tebaldi e adorando la Callas. Comunque anche la Scotto è meravigliosa
A melhor interpretação desta ária eh a de Hayley Westerns, sem sombra de dúvidas. Voz clara, ela não cacareja como.a maioria destas sopranos. Vai diretamente aa nota aguda sem tremelicacoes sonoras. O que, reforço, eh raro.

Starts sweet enough but then gradually declines until she is screeching. Now go and listen to Callas.
Eh? Screeching? Are you sure it's not your sound system or wi-fi connection? 😂 Ok sound quality on this 'old ' video is far from HD & she does sound a little top heavy in the mix ( I can see the VU meters hitting the red on some notes ) which I suspect is the reason why it sounds a wee bit 'whack ' in one or two places.
I agree with you but what callas gave to singing and performing nobody else did.

You can hear the decline in her voice here. I understand why they accused her of "screeching" and there's that excessive vibrato that got worse towards the end of her career. By the time, she performed her final Butterfly at The Met, it was excruciating. She had good instincts though.
You didn't mention her Norma, Francesca di Rimini, Manon or her Musetta at the Met. I saw these and was impressed at how effective she was, even with a diminished voice.
Gossip has it that Scotto got so much play at the Met because she befriended James Levine and helped him out of a legal bind by lending him some money. Don't know, if that is true. She also came at the right time: there was a shortage of A list divas at the time and she fit the bill. She had good instincts but her voice was not in a class with Sutherland and Pavorotti, who were the reigning stars of the opera circuit at the time.
She has always been class B
I have a very different recollection of their Gioconda. For me, Pavorotti excelled in the sheer beauty of his effortless voice. Scotto on the other hand was all histrionics and a lot of vibrato. She made no attempt to connect with anyone on that stage, it was all Scotto and even got pissed at Pavorotti for taking solo curtain calls.
That all might be true, but there was a documentary film made about that production and while Scotto might have been pissed at Pavorotti's not knowing the entire role, she must MORE pissed at his taking so many solo curtain calls. You should try to see if the documentary is on UA-cam. It's really a good film.
Her breathing is just terrible! But she is a beautiful lady!
In her prime I'm pretty sure her technique was solid, but I agree with you, terrible breath. Nevertheless, she still has that glorious tone.

Piu' artificiale e falsa in questo brano c'e' solo la Schwarzkopf...lo smalto rosa lucido e tutta quella "brillanteria"....
