Deputy Debate: Carmel Sepuloni and Nicola Willis go head to head | Checkpoint

- You've heard from the sheriffs, now it's the turn of the deputies.
National's Deputy leader, Nicola Willis and Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni.
It's just over a week til the polls close and things have arguably turned a little nasty; with allegations of race baiting and name calling .
Chris Hipkins is still locked down with COVID.
And latest poll shows Labour's spinning its wheels on 26 percent and unable to form a governement on those numbers. .
National's apparently stalled too, but at 36 Percent it does have a path to power but its with Winston Peters.
And that's prompted a campaign cameo from a former PM - trying to tidy up some political lose ends.
So the Deputies, do they always agree with their Chris or Christopher? What would they give up to be in government and are their policies on point?
Carmel Sepuloni is in our Auckland studio and Nicola Willis is in Wellington.
3:25 "some things said behind closed doors you can't discuss in open forums" - WTF???
"Trust me bro"
No, the public want ANSWERS, from OUR EMPLOYEES.
I'd like to know exactly what happened to make Labour refuse to work with NZ First, thanks. It's of concern to everyone.
Nicola does not seem convinced with what she is saying. There are a lot of holes in National's policies.
Well just look at Air New Zealand.
Nationals policy should be nicknamed “the Swiss cheese policy”
@@jasonport6691 labor , sausage roll budget ....cause that's you'll be able to afford .
Well Labour have had 6 years to improve things and look where we are - worse economy in the OECD, gangs up by 40%, increased crime, criminals who laugh at our justice system because they have more rights than their victims, increased truancy at schools, and the country more divided than ever before. Labour has gone from the workers party to the woke party focusing all their energy (and our money) on the negatives. Where's the vision for all New Zealand ? Where is the ambition? Where is the celebration of all that is good about our country ? Are you saying you more of the same?
@@SteveMartin-d5x That is lies. New Zealand is one of the best in the OECD.
National's policy to create poverty will increase crime, mental health, and health propblems - expense and misery for the whole country.
National caused the school problems we see now, and will hide them.
The country is divided because of hate trolls like you planting disinformation in our social media.
We need to build our country from the bottom up and the middle out.
Ahahahaha - NATIONAL is the party that couldn't produce any policy just speak negatives!
What is woke? Hate speech. Actually, woke means being aware of others.
Where is the celebration of what is good in our country? Destroyed and turned into hate and violence by overseas trolls. While the rest of us are getting on dealing with disasters which are no fault of Labour.
Labour started a lot of positive change. That has been shouted down and will be destroyed by National.
Let Labour continue the good work, and we will see reduction in crime, increase in wealth and poor people able to start businesses instead of unable to feed their kids. And a much happier society.
Wake up!
More of these Deputy PM debates please
" Among the revelations the largest group i.e. 1.4 milion NZers will receive just $30 per fortnight from National's tax cuts. Weight that against deep public service cuts. "
Dwell on that for a moment.
That is $15 per week which will absorb within 3-6 months due to increase cost of living, which is mainly caused by our addictions to importation of most everyday items which are subject to geopolitical, economic, trade, supply chain, health uncertainties and the disruptive and destructive effects of a warming planet.
@@chrismckellar9350how much import substitution might we be capable of doing? 🤔
@@mikebarton - If the country puts its mind to it, a lot. NZ can be more self sufficient than what we are doing at present but this requires of the square thinking and stop looking at the future through 'here and now' lens which NACTs can not.
@@chrismckellar9350 give us an example of a product/industry. 🤔
@@mikebarton -What do you think.
It has been consistently Nicolas go to - to always reflect on the opponents actions and not actually answer with her policy.
$2 billion from the poor - to add $25 per week to median incomes.
Why are people supporting not taxing the rich?
Because if you tax the rich more.some might close up business and move overseas.i would to.
@@sonnyluka2637 No, the opposite.
More businesses would be able to start up and thrive. They are not the rich we are talking about, they will not be taxed more.
Big business's main aim is to wipe out competition from small business, who are usually more efficient and have reasonable profit margins.
I'm sure if you could spell you would move overseas.
@W_Bin then why did you write.why are people supporting not taxing the rich,?
@W_Bin even if i couldn't spell every word in the dictionary I'll still move overseas.
@@sonnyluka2637 You are obviously so ignorant you don't realise that most business owners are not rich. They are middle class.

The woman who is supposed to be managing his debate is useless...letting the two participants constantly talk over each other is very poor management. I'm off...........
yeah she was rubbish. Caramel was just trying to be a bully.
I'm fine with the talking over each other when one of them doesn't want to answer questions
I missed out on $100 for the vaccine and I missed out on $100 for the census, I wonder if I can get a hundred dollars for this, or is that still illegal?
18:10 Nicola: ''That's just a hypothetical'''...Lisa: ''let's discuss all the hypotheticals'' (I insist)
What about another rent freeze and price freeze like muldoon did?
costs lumped on landlords by Labour will push rents up even more. What up $200 a week on average since Labour got in? What a joke punishing your own constituents.
Greens are proposing rent controls. Probably that will mean you can't put up rents without good reason.
Will stop them rorting the accommodation benefit and ratcheting rents, charging 10x what they were charging a few years ago.

14:00 Record this segment and let's replay it after National has cut building housing AND sold off our housing overseas, if they win.
On under $15,000 a year as a fulltime carer . If they were an acc client it would be a bit more but anyway Idid the nats calculator and I get zero dollars a fortnight more !
Oh to be one of the 3000!
Get Vaccinated. Save Lives. Be Kind.
And other lies.
Awesome work Carmel, very cool, calm, & competent. Your destroyed Nicola!! MALO e ngaue.
I thought Nicola picked up Sepoloni and dumped her in the trash can. 😅
Nicola had dodgy dealings involving Fonterra.
Time will show who tells truth and who just talks.
You don't want another 6years of labor do you. ? ...
Carmel said that values and policies are not the same thing.
Surely values are what dictate policies and policies reflect one's values.
Unbelievable that she does not think that policies and values go hand in hand.
A policy is not a value, a policy is how you get to your said value? Of course that can be different. Not rocket science 🤔
Eh I kinda get what she's saying, personally I'm a far leftist who would like to see global capitalism overthrown but I know that's not going to happen for a long time so making reforms within the capitalism system we have now is the best we can do to make short term progressive change even though that's where my values lie
Like so many lefties Carmel isn’t very smart and probably has air or rocks in her head like most lefties do. Some have Sh-, and I believe a considerable number of them have all 3 .
@@RJH755😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Spending borrowed money is not brave!
New Zealand has one of the lowest debt to GDP in the OECD.
so $30 a fortnight for most new Zealanders under Nationals tax "cut" but less for the poorest and 8x more for the 3000 richest. Last time they gave tax cuts gst went up and before that they tried to put $50 to go to A and E. NZ is doing well compared to the international cost of living crisis.
Was it every family ? or up to ? I'm confused
God if only I’m not a Labour supporter, but National are only there and there abouts. It’s confusing.
Good question about Winston holding the purse.
Weasel word's from nicola.
Good to see Carmel hold her integrity with her loyalty to the PM. Nothing people hate more than politicians letting their integrity slip.
In fact Carmel has overtalked Nicola so much, and will not let her speak. Disgraceful.
Carmel is of the great unwashed who is blessed to be in our country but chooses to attack the people who gave her the opportunities to be where she is today. Disgusting

What a disgusting debate this was,can see why RNZ is going down the gurgle with an interviewer this bad. And it's not bloody Aotearoa it's New Zealand , now that the Labour clowns have lost hopefully one of the first things on Nationals list will be to sort out our shocking left woke media.
Thanks, RNZ for another very informative session. Keep it up!
RNZ, another pro Labour mouth piece.
Not every media outlet which makes National look bad (because they ARE bad) are pro-Labour
I guess that's what trolls and useful idiots think of broadcasters that ask 2 deputy leaders to speak on questions the public want answers to.
BTW how much do you get paid for saying that about a programme that did not express a single opinion?
My friends still qualify for half-price public transport. The National Party tax calculator says they'll get an extra $54.31 a fortnight.
However, when they lose half-price public transport, as National has indicated, they'll have to pay an extra $100 a fortnight for travel.
100-54.31=45.69
Has National mentioned issues like that?
Free meds will go too…
@@o900junior it is as you say. 🫤
No National hasn't mentioned, as their messaging is to those who support National and those support who support ACT. Those low incomes like beneficiaries, super annuation, minimum and living wage, will still struggle to put food on the table like in the UK under a National lead government if it last 3 years.
jeez looks like people are really doing their research, awesome by watching the debates
Carmel is a dog with a bone
Makes me want yo vote NZ First so much 😆
Cudos to RNZ for allowing people to comment! I wish Newshub would do the same 😂
Why does she have so much to say when she is only a list MP ???? Just asking.
Increases to min wage has put these earners into the 30% tax for their extra effort! And lost the $520 IETC. The min wage increases have also pushed other wages up into the 33-39% tax brackets! Inflated prices pays more gst tax to govt!
Workers loose loose paye tax then gst on inflayed prices. Fresh food no gst is a joke!
I go with tax threasholds increase, gives incentive to work more and earn more!
Nicola can't handle any scrutiny lmao
why is Nicola reading the answers? hmmm
Yea nicola but weve had a pandemic climate weather events and cost of living to deal with not just new Zealand but worldwide economy problems

5:44 good questioning!
Labour continue on with the Blame Game. They can't promote their past record as it is so dismal, so they attack National. It's like they are accepting being in opposition by asking questions only ala Question Time in Parliament.
The Nats are the ones attacking, not Labour.
@@carolkara987 Carmel is the one that is talking over Nicola. Typical bully tactics which she always uses. Height of ignorance.
If National came into power our country will suffer tremendously, so, We are better off with Labour ✔️✔️
Child abuse and child death numbers have gone up in the past 6 years. Is that better off.
Remember?? Safe and Effective Jabcinda. New Zealand Loyal and start the change one percent Tax At least google the polices
Wow that was awesome and 10k views in 3 days great debate
Carmel well done 👍
The issue is National has no actual policies other than theoretical waffle that has no plan B. So 3000 households will get $125 per week extra a week through tax cuts, etc. So the actual tax cuts to most households is going to be $15 per week which will absorb within 3-6 months due to increase cost of living, which is mainly caused by our addictions to importation of most everyday items which are subject to geopolitical, economic, trade, supply chain, health uncertainties and the disruptive and destructive effects of a warming planet. What a National lead government is planning to do is make NZ like the UK where their financially conservative government is struggling after 13 years in office and they doesn't have NZ First as a coalition partner.
Nicola is creepy
A good debate, with scrutiny of both sides, and challenging them too. Good starting questions of values vs policies. Watching it is interesting compared to listening to it, you see body language of irritability 7:41 7:52 and shifting of seats discomfort 16:45 , and an eye roll 19:10
6:14 that is a very cynical insistence on the question, straight after "Caucus" programme you called Labour "undisciplined" (which I disagree with) because it's members expressed their personal views as well as their election policy. Get consistent please.
Most vulnerable.... The mongrel mob .....😂
National could always go grand coalition, all their best policies are already Labour ones, but the polls are always too far to the right the last few elections even with all the large donations National and Act get, so it won't be 28 36 more 33, 33. We don't want the extremes, we want middle. Even a support and confidence would work.
I doubt it'll be 33/33 but I do think it'll be closer than the roughly 10 point different the polls are indicating now, even now there are still quite a few people undecided
and the potential coalition arrangements we could see seem to be making people reconsidor. Whatever happens though I would expect the purple vote will be the lowest we've seen in a long time and the minor parties will be calling the shots and we'll either get a further left or further right government than usual, unless as you suggest National and Labour realize they have more in common with each other than their coalition partners and decided to form a grand coalition like we've seen in Germany
People need to watch The River of Freedom at the pictures and they would not vote Red or Blue actually no one in the Beehive now {no joke}
OOPPS my mistake Reminder of Jabcinda Get Vaccinated save lives be kind. yeah right
Poor little antivax petal - boo hoo!!!! STILL angry cause you got yo sad ass kicked out of Parliament grounds?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I would note that Nicola Willis is a liar and also how is the National Party going to afford the Tax cuts . Go Carmel . Love from Adam.
If you just reduce the secondary tax rate and the primary tax rate for nz up to the average income
To the same as gst then it would cost less all round and people would have more to spend
Brilliant Carmel, way to go. All Nicola can do is attack and some of her answers come across as a bit dodgy.
It's interesting how Carmel characterizes the greens party wealth tax as a policy, in order to rebut Nicola's statement. Obviously, it's a policy, however, these policies are derived from a set of belief systems, underlined by ones core values. Just one of the many examples of where people can easily find common ground, yet it is never done. It's funny how we constantly look to others to solve our problems. It undermines human potential. It's not necessary to tax the wealthy extra. In fact, its detrimental, they'll take their business and wealth elsewhere. Then what are people going to do? They've not figured out how to create their own wealth, all they know how to do is tax the wealthy 🤷🏻♀
Nicola Willis as finance minister her numbers don't add up🤦🤦🤦🥴🥴🥴

I have noticed there has been a biased against National, NZ First and Act and some of their members from main stream media in the weeks leading up to the election. This is disgusting and the media should be completely neutral.

Labour and the Maori Party have successfully lowered the whole standard of human respect and fair debate among politicians in and out of Parliament.

How can Nicola work with Luxon...
Christopher Luxon has made it clear that he regards abortion as tantamount to murder. He has also made it clear that he will do nothing to prevent abortion. By his own admission Christopher Luxon is willing to permit conduct that he regards as tantamount to murder. New Zealand should be weary of a man who can put his values aside so easily.
Christopher Luxon tells us that he has great confidence in Nicola Willis. Yet Nicola Willis is a strong supporter of abortion rights. Luxon has confidence in someone who according to his own worldview supports behavior tantamount to murder.
Christopher Luxon does not take his values seriously. He is by his own admission going to permit behavior that he regards as tantamount to murder. Do we really want as our Prime Minister a man who would permit an action that he regards as tantamount to murder? A man who is so willing to put his morals aside is a very dangerous man. New Zealand should be concerned about Christopher Luxon’s moral credibility.
Well spoken
